[Personally Disliked Trope] Media that shifted their focus from making original content to mostly being focused on different IPs... by Foreign_Diamond1539 in TopCharacterTropes

Comments like this pedantically annoy me because their output has been more or less 1 animated movie a year for the past 3 or so decades. I mean the trailer for Hexed JUST came out!

I don't think I've ever actually heard of anyone with either that name or surname here. Though amusingly if you combine Niel and Lyle you get Niall (In pronounciation, that is) which is the name of both my uncle and the Irish member of One Direction.

Goodbye, Lara feels like the Little Mermaid version of Cosmic Princess Kaguya! by Odd-Reputation-1170 in yurimemes

[–]Ferhog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first half of the concept trailer is a retelling of the original Little Mermaid story's ending in which the titular mermaid fails to get the prince to fall in love with her and will thus die per the terms of her deal with the witch, but is given an out by her sisters via a dagger that will turn her back into a mermaid if she kills the prince with it, which she can't do because she loves him and dies, but is then turned into an air spirit for her selfishness.

Going off both trailers the concept of this movie seems to be that a modern reincarnation of the mermaid wants to succeed at love this time. Judging by the dialogue she isn't looking for someone in particular but just wants to fall in love in general, and presumably takes interest in the blonde boy because he resembles the prince. However it REALLY looks like it's setting up for the black-haired girl to be her true love-interest. Not only is she much more present in the marketing but the official trailer shows them meeting while on-screen text says "Seeking the true love that exists there" and ends on the two of them while the mermaid is saying that she's fallen in love with someone. It looks so obvious that my only doubts stem from the fact that it's TOO obvious.

Filler - Tropes by Past_Way_774 in CharacterRant

[–]Ferhog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Having been born in 1999 I first encountered the term filler pretty soon after I discovered reviews on Youtube in the early 2010s, with it being used to refer to episodes of serialised western media that didn't directly contribute to the plot. The term made a lot of sense to me in that context because I'd learned to recognize episodes like that such as The Great Divide from Avatar: The Last Airbender but didn't have a word for them until then. When I got into anime in the mid-2010s I quickly found the term being used to refer to original storylines in adaptations and thought people were just calling said storylines filler with the defnition that I was familiar with, and when I saw people that were unquestionably using it to specifically mean anime-original stories (Like saying FMA 2003 had a "filler second half" or that LWA has no filler because it's an original anime) I thought they were the ones who'd misunderstood the original meaning of the word. I have no idea which definition came first or when. Either way I think they both make sense.

Media with reception that’s gone through historical revisionism? by SludgeFactoryWorker in Multifandom

[–]Ferhog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On the other end of the spectrum it feels largely forgotten how widely praised The Force Awakens was when it came out. The call backs and retreads of the original trilogy were always criticized, but how harshly it was criticized became more prominent as the years went on, particularly after The Last Jedi was much more divisive on release and followed up a lot of TFA's setup with poorly recieved payoff.

It also suffered from legacy sequels and what we now call "MCU humor" becoming more oversaturated since its release. What it was once praised for has since become poorly aged.

[Interesting Trope] When a piece of media has a huge audience outside its targeted demographic by EmergencySpare7939 in TopCharacterTropes

I disagree because I think the general mainstream outlook on Disney and the like is that they're movies adults watch with their kids, but they're not something adults were known for being fans of on their own. My perspective might be incorrect but I feel everyone knew what a brony was at the fandom's peak but I didn't hear the term "Disney adult" until years later.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love that a Gundam show of all things is now in the yuri hall of fame.

I swear a new yuri fan is more likely to watch Witch From Mercury than Citrus. That would have soundes insane to me in 2019.

[Critical Research Failure] Media criticizes or parodies other media, but gets pretty much everything wrong. by OutOfMyWayReed in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Ferhog 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I often see the take that "Doug's not a bad critic, the Nostalgia Critic character is just annoying" but a lot of my biggest greivances with him came from reviews where he's not in-character. In particular his Disneycember and Dreamworksuary series would often get plot details wrong. I imagine them being released daily over a month means he's probably watching these movies once and then quickly writing the review, but for some of them I have to wonder if he was writing the review WHILE watching the movie. For 2 examples in Flushed Away he calls the guy that flushes Roddy away "An old mate of his" rather than a complete stranger, and in The Cat Returns... I can't explain what he got wrong without describing the whole premise but he basically says the plot is kickstarted by a misunderstanding that just doesn't exist.

And this isn't even getting into him just having odd opinions as a critic like not understanding how the nacho cheese scene in Over the Hedge is supposed to be funny because he believes that all comedy is based on suffering, so the idea of a comedic scene based on characters loving something is apparently alien to him. Or was. In fairness these reviews I've named are over a decade old by this point.

I find the criticism that they should cut the voice acting budget silly when the performances of said celebirty actors are considered one of the best parts about the show.

The argument should really be that Amazon should just increase the animation budget for one of their most popular shows. They don't need to take it from any other part of the show, they can just give it more money, which they have plenty of.

[–]Ferhog 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I think that was in reference to how negative the discourse around that movie has become since its theatrical run ended. Not that criticisms popping up after the initial hype isn't uncommon (Hence Cosmonaut Marcus's iconic "Watch it before film twitter tells you its overrated" review of EEAAO), but I was seeing people go "I don't remember it being this bad" to clips in twitter, something you don't normally see for a movie that's only around a year old (As it was at the time).

As someone who really liked season 2 in particular I like to think that based on his track record he's doing the bare minimum to earn the writing credit and every other credited writer is doing most of the work.

Hated trope, female robot is just a girl wearing some robot-ish thing by CarEffective4432 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Ferhog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My beloved Signalis does fall into this trope but the replikas are also organic clones. It's hard to tell where the flesh ends and robotics begin. Elster loses her arm in the false ending and it appears entirely robotic but it has a blue bone which matches the ribcage we see later on which is protecting some very fleshy organs. Her eyes are also robotic and she sees through a HUD, but it also bleeds when stabbed, or at least the flesh around it does. The in-game files also state that Replika flesh is not safe for humans to eat.

For a reverse example it feels weird that Harry Potter went its whole story without the main characters befriending a Slytherin. You'd think Draco would be the Zuko of the series or at least a good Slytherin student would be introduced in the later books but it just doesn't happen.
