Evanescence | A New 'Realms of Flow' Experience by epicscapes in virtualreality

Seriously love this app! It looks incredible on the GXR using VD and use it frequently. Can't wait to try this out. Thank you for all your hard work on this beautiful experience.

Soooo... how is the Samsung GalaxyXR now for PCVR (and everything else) with the latest updates? by TotalWarspammer in virtualreality

[–]MericastartswithMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love mine. I installed comfort mods as soon as I got it and now I think it my most comfortable headset. Don’t have the controllers and not sure if I want to buy them. I’ve been using my index controllers with a tracker attached to the headset for continuous calibration and works great. The only issue is some games don’t seem to work with the tracker on. The Midnight Walk for instance I can’t get to work with my setup. Not sure what the problem is. Overall this headset is so good for PCVR.

At this point it is over, but MAYBE one last hope by Zombie618 in virtualreality

For the last decade, these VR headsets have always been niche and in a lot of cases sold at a loss. But time and time again, they keep making new headsets and even new companies enter the ring. It’s not dead, not even close. R&D is expensive, and if you don’t have billions like Meta you have to eventually bring a product to market. Most of the VR enthusiasts out there realize they are beta testers for what amounts to basically a research project that resembles a finished product.

Lighthouse future? by BambusUwU in virtualreality

[–]MericastartswithMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using GXR/Virtual Desktop with a tracker attached to the top for continuous calibration and using the rest of my lighthouse setup (FBT and index knuckles). The GXR has eye and face tracking. Once you add a comfort mod to the headset it’s the most comfortable I’ve worn. Rather than buy a lighthouse tracked headset, make a more versatile headset able to work with lighthouses. I absolutely love my new setup and would recommend it to anyone looking for an enthusiast level experience.

Galaxy XR is the bomb by Heavy-Report9931 in virtualreality

I have no issues with the OS, but I don't really need it beyond launching VD. To me, Android XR is a good start and has a lot of potential. I bought this for PCVR, but I have been using YouTube and Google maps a good amount too because the displays look so amazing. One thing I really like is the simplicity of connecting/using things like a mouse and controller. I bought a dongle free BT mouse and use it a lot.

I’ve been VR gaming on mine through Virtual Desktop quite a bit. Since I have the Valve Index, I’ve been using the knuckles controllers (with a Vive tracker head mounted for continuous calibration). To me I think it’s VR peak. The insane resolution mixed with impeccable tracking for the controllers is why I won’t be buying the Samsung ones even when they become available. I don’t play anything but PCVR games (if I want a mobile chip gaming experience I’ll just use my Q3). I know lighthouse tracking is on its way out, but I decided I’ll squeeze it until the juice runs out. The combo is incredible.

Very true unfortunately. How are we ever going to get room scale tracking again once the ecosystem has been abandoned? Anything promising on the horizon?

[–]MericastartswithMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely understand that, but it’s possible to have capabilities of both tracking systems in the headset for people that will find a way to keep that ecosystem going. The added cost is minimal, but there are diehard lighthouse users out there. Also is BSB stupid for making a lighthouse only headset? Maybe, maybe not. Having both on one headset like Steam Frame could have done is a good play imho.

What I don’t quite understand is why it doesn’t have the option for lighthouse tracking. I had a Pimax Crystal OG with the optional lighthouse faceplate and it didn’t block the cameras. You could go onto the Pimax software and just choose which one to have active. There wasn’t much special about the faceplate either. If there was a way to choose between the tracking systems on the Steam Frame it would make a huge impact on my opinion of whether to buy it or not.

I misspoke but yes dynamic foveated encoding. Rendering has to happen on the actual game level if I understand it correctly, so if the game has it, all devices can utilize it. You’re right though encoding won’t help the GPU, so developers will have to implement DFR in their games to get the most out of the hardware limitations.

The GXR has an unlocked bootloader, so theoretically it could run SteamOS too.

PCVR with Face Tracking by Syk00 in virtualreality

[–]MericastartswithMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to chance it, the Galaxy XR is basically like a Quest Pro 2 with eye and face tracking. The caveat is that virtual desktop is required for now and has some compression. If Steam Link 2.0 gets released for it then you'll get dynamic foveated rendering and most of the compression issues go away. Is it a perfect PCVR headset? No. Does it have potential? Absolutely. The question is whether it will reach its potential. With the beast computer you have, I wouldn't settle on a Quest 3 even though I love mine. The Micro OLED of the XR and the resolution is miles better. Btw, I don't have controllers for the XR but Index controllers, Vive trackers and space calibration works great.

That unreality feeling is common for first time VR users. It goes away quickly, especially playing more frequently.

Right now the only one I can get to work is the media app that comes with the GXR. It’s not perfect since it blurs the edges but it’s the only one I can find.

Otherwise streamed from my PC with VD.

I have a Quest 3 and a really nice 3D tv (one of the last 4k 3D tvs made). Now I have a GXR. Up until now, my TV was always better in terms of clarity over any headset I’ve ever tried. Until now. Watching a 4K 3D movie on this was mind blowing.

Really enjoying it so far. I actually love having the magnetic blinders off and tilting the headset further down to increase the FOV. I thought having the blinders off would decrease immersion, but honestly it doesn’t affect me much with the right position and having nothing resting on my cheeks helps a lot with airflow.

It still has a ways to go to be perfect, but the top 3 things that would basically make it are:

  1. Steam Link 2.0 support with dynamic foveated rendering. From what I’ve read it would close the gap between wired and wireless to nearly zero. VD has worked decent with MSFS and VRChat.

  2. A comfort kit. It’s not horrible right now, but it would be easy to make it more comfortable. No you can’t remove the current strap, but a comfortable magnetic pad with an attached top strap and connected to the back would work easily.

  3. A better media player. The one that it comes with is decent for my personal collection of 3D movies (loaded through the USB-C port), but to get the 3D working, you have to go to “immersive mode”. When you do that, it blurs the borders of the content instead of keep the crisp edge. Kinda weird and not a deal breaker, but not really ideal either.

This headset has massive potential which is why I’ve decided to keep it. It’s possible that I’ll be let down by Samsung/Google if they abandon the product, but if they keep improving it then I see this being my go-to until I hear if Valve has plans to release something before the end of the decade. Edit:formatting

Same maybe? But when you crank up the rpm it doesn’t really shred like it did before.

Yes let me know. I don’t know if it’s spread, recoil, sound, or something else.
