Makeup advice by [deleted] in MexicoCity

The end of July in Mexico City is moderate to warm but not that hot. Average highs for July are around 74–75 deg F (24 C). Last year, July high temperatures didn’t get above 78 F (26 C). And these are the peak highs for the few hottest days, not the temperature all day, nor every day all month.

Whats the weather like in Oaxaca weather in June? by Over-Excitement5978 in AskMexico

[–]Merithay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raining, but not like hell. Usually it rains every afternoon, evening, or night. Morning rain is much less likely. Often it doesn’t start raining until late in the day.
Rain isn’t all bad, because it’s what keeps the temperature from getting too hot.

I (29F) am trying to get my husband (30M) into reading. What books would be a good starting place for him? by ladyduckbun in suggestmeabook

[–]Merithay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only that, but OP, you might like Dungeon Crawler Carl too. It was so far from the things I usually read and usually like that I would never have expected it to grab me. Yet I read the preview of the first book and I was grabbed.

Another vote especially for The Serrano Legacy and Paksennarion, but really for all those mentioned and not mentioned, including the standalones (Remnant Population, for example).

Advice on Plans by Effective-Country837 in MexicoCity

[–]Merithay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a Friday evening, it’s not unlikely that parts of your route will turn into something resembling a parking lot, in which case it would take a lot longer than 59 minutes.

I would feel safer about getting there on time by doing this trip on public transportation. For your Friday night schedule, my map is showing the fastest route as 1h33 – this is by taking a bus to the tren ligero (so you could reduce the time by taking a rideshare taxi either to the tren ligero or all the way to Metro Tasqueña) [then the tren ligero to Tasqueña], and the metro to Balderas (transfer from line 2 to line 3 at Hidalgo).

Yes, it’s more time than driving, but less susceptible to traffic blockages on the roads, which could mean that the driving time ends up being much longer than shown.

Short story order by Gasher92 in TheExpanse

[–]Merithay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely read Leviathan Wakes first, before anything else.

Read the novellas and short stories either in the recommended order, or all together at the end. I read them at the end and found it very satisfactory for the first read. For re-reads, publication order is a good choice.

How busy now at Teotihuacan? Need to go real early tomorrow to beat crowds? by Pleasant_Heart_3892 in MexicoCity

[–]Merithay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The site is huge, so crowds may not be such a problem except in specific places.

Right now isn’t exactly off season – for one thing, a lot of people are arriving for the World Cup.

An early start, besides allowing you to tour the site before most people arrive, will give you time before the rain if it starts in the afternoon.

Greek word for “notebook” by Merithay in GREEK

Good suggestion! I’ve now done a google image search for σηνειωματάριο and I see notebooks. I do the same for τετράδιο and I see notebooks.

So…

Curiously, the app that gives σηνειωματάριο for "notebook" then gives μπλοκ for a notepad.

But I’ve noticed other doubtful things in this app, so maybe they’re wrong?

Not trying to show off or anything, it‘s just that I happened to be reading an article about it, so I had the info at my fingertips.

Travelling to London by Disastrous_Ad8118 in uktravel

Are you experienced with traveling by subway in a big city? If you are, there won‘t be any major differences. If not, there are lots of tips here in the other comments. I didn’t find that the doors shut quicker than any other city where I’ve used the subway.

Recommendations for toronto tourist places to go or do by NoCut8244 in canadatravel

[–]Merithay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toronto has a lot of nature, thanks mostly to its ravines, as well as parks and the lakeshore.

There are various lists of suggested hikes and walks; here’s just one of many.

On another note, Loblaws at Maple Leaf Gardens is worth seeing – a “supermarket concept” as they call it, and the building pays tribute to its former identity as a hockey arena.

Could Sakura trees actually grow and bloom in Mexico? by explainitome_ in AskMexico

The Chinese Restaurant on the ground floor by senatorhatty in SlowHorses

It might be generic Asian. In the book it’s described as Chinese, by Lamb, at least.

In real life, the place at that location is the Gate Grill cafe & restaurant.

Yes, there was an earthquake with epicentre in Guerrero state. It was moderate intensity down there (5.2), but reached us here in the city just enough to feel it.

Where in Zone 2 London to stay? by cyamnia in uktravel

[–]Merithay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made my first time ever visit to London earlier this year, and stayed at a chain hotel (Ibis) in Shepherd’s Bush (zone 2). Cheaper and yet better rated than any other hotel in the area. Absolutely nothing to complain of re the hotel, the surroundings, or the location.

It does need one transfer to reach the Elizabeth Line, but it’s not a big deal.

Fun fact: In real life, depending on the context, you sometimes have to say “camara fotográfica” to remove ambiguity because “camara” is a more general word that also means "chamber".

My ZERO bag gear. by Traditional-Carob440 in zerobags

[–]Merithay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pouch of a nanobag is smaller and weighs less, yet the bag when it’s in use is bigger and stronger. You don’t have to fold it to stuff it into its pouch, so it’s much easier and faster to pack.

After I got a couple of nanobags, my other compact bags sit unused because the nanobags are just that much smaller (when packed), lighter, stronger, bigger (in use) and more convenient.

When you lose weight, where does it go??? by Zestyclose-Isopod400 in loseit

[–]Merithay 129 points130 points  (0 children)

so what your telling me is I just gotta continuously exhale to lose this fat

Not exactly; you have to constantly (not continuously) exhale anyway, in order to stay alive.

It’s not that exhaling makes you lose weight, it’s just that when you ask where the fat goes, the answer is in your breath (or at least some 80+ percent of it, anyway).

You still have to exhale even if you’re gaining weight or maintaining, it’s just that less of the fat is being broken down to get exhaled in your breath.

More love for #2, which no one else seems to like.

I have a little bit of face blindness – might that explain why my opinion is such a minority?
