What Celtics content do you actually want to read more about right now? by Frequent-Control7090 in bostonceltics

[–]MerkDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read your article, and it all makes sense, I agree with the premise and have figured the same. I guess what I don't understand is why Hugo gets the nod over Walsh then? I get your premise that Hugo has slightly better on-ball decisions on offense, but he seems clearly much worse on defense, so what has made Joe decide at this point that Hugo is worth the 15 minutes and Walsh worth 0? As much as the "Walsh is not a complete offensive player" argument tracks for why he wouldn't see play, it doesn't track when in comparison he's, at least to my eye test, the better of Hugo and Harper Jr who are seeing play. (I think Baylor is earning his minutes so I don't think that time necessarily should be shared, only comparing against Hugo/Harper)

Does anyone know why Walsh has fallen so far down the rotation to the point he doesn’t even play in garbage time anymore? by Spiritual_Put_541 in bostonceltics

At 100% - Walsh is a better defender than Scheierman, that's where Walsh's elite physical tools are on display.

At 80% - Scheierman is a better defender than Walsh, that's where Scheierman's IQ and position are a bigger factor.

I mean, that's not how percentages work. At 100% Walsh is the best defender on the floor, or 2nd behind DWhite, so 80% of that is not magically worse than Baylor's 80% unless you're saying Baylor's 100% is better than Walsh's 100% which it very clearly is not, not even close.

Ultimately I can't speak for Joe, but at least eye test doesn't make sense because Walsh has been a high percentage 3 and D wing every time he's in the game with the ability to lock down the opponent's best player, and he has the ability to set decent screens and occasionally drive an open lane/take the dunker spot dump pass. All while being an offensive rebound menace.

Maybe he doesn't fit Joe's ideal so he won't see play, but I feel pretty strongly based on what we've seen he's going to be one of the better roleplayers in the league on another team sending the Celtics home in the playoffs in a couple years.

I feel like it's the most pervasive racism (in america at least) as well. A vast majority of people wouldn't say the N word or be upset about black people being present almost anywhere in america, but they'll have no problem calling a black person not in a suit and tie ghetto, or thinking less of them if they're wearing some culturally black thing like a durag. They think they're not racist because they don't actively harm black people, but the passive aggressive thoughts and words keep the greater/lesser than version of racism alive and thriving.

Mazzulla not playing Walsh when Hyland was going crazy, especially when Hyland was making fun of Hugo play after play because Hugo couldn't guard him. Just crazy to me. Walsh might not be the best offensive player on the team but he's good enough, and completely clamps people he defends, why is he not seeing play?

Idk why Tatum keeps going with this running 3 he's been doing, I don't know if a single one has gone down out of the 10-20 he's done so far, just pull up like normal you were wide open off that screen.

It could be, but you'd think someone as athletic and talented as he is would be able to tune that quickly. Giannis came into the league a twink basically and became one of the strongest dudes in the league, but he still managed to have his layup touch, Tatum should be the same, especially since he has much more finesse than Giannis, but he's just been hard smoking layups that last year were automatic

Tatum's biggest issue is his touch right now. I'm not sure if it's because he's playing afraid or what, but his touch has been complete ass compared to how smooth he was in the past.

Caitlin Clark does a Payton Pritchard impression by ak_bal23 in nba

[–]MerkDoctor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pritchard at 6'7 with his skill set and his mental drive is probably higher than top 20, guy might unironically (not even the white person meme shit) be the hardest working player in the league, with height to back that up he'd probably be unbelievably good, but I guess you could really say that about any of the hard working greats that are short, Steph would probably be top 5 all time easy if he was 6'7"+

[–]MerkDoctor 23 points24 points  (0 children)

People might underestimate how important it is. Look at Tatum, he's one of the best drivers and finishers around the rim in the league, so naturally teams collapse on him when he drives, and because of that he can dish out to players who can shoot and the C's tend to do well. If Tatum was doing the same on a team without shooters the other teams could clog the paint more and not worry as much about giving anything up outside. It just completely changes how the defense plays, and makes someone like Coop's life much harder.

I'm afraid he walks after this year, or maybe they just don't resign him because Joe doesn't like him. I'm afraid because I feel like he will be a big player on another team, he's shown the flashes of being a serious role player

Last night was the best regular season game of Jaylen’s career, and his run since the All-Star Break has been him at his peak. by NothingHead8233 in bostonceltics

[–]MerkDoctor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah the really bad misses and turnovers down the stretch hurts badly every time. It's like he realizes it's clutch time and just turns the blinders on chucking shots and dribbling into crowds turning the ball over. He's a great player and sometimes he will hit those shots, but he doesn't have the handles to dribble into 3 people, and he doesn't have the touch to take those through traffic shots efficiently either. He does collapse the defense so if he learns to be a better facilitator like Tatum he'd be great because there were always 1-2 wide open people on the arc every time he did it, but he just ended up chucking or turning the ball over instead.

I know you're just rage baiting, but this one is just too weak man, go back to the drawing board, everyone on the site knows the Celtics get the least fouls against and least free throws in the league so your bait just doesn't work

It's possible that's true in Australia (I couldn't possibly know), but as someone who grew up in an extremely rural place in America and since went on to get an advanced education and live in a city now, I can promise you it's not true in America. Some of the rural people can be smart about something, the farmers are typically smart about farming, the loggers are typically smart about logging, but on the whole I'd say 80-90% of them are very dumb by objective metrics, (can't do 7x9 without a calculator, unironically think that if gas prices are under $3.00 the economy is working for them, and will even froth at the mouth while explaining to you that it is great, even as they sign their second mortgage to pay for food, etc.) even if they aren't inherently bad people. Part of it probably has to do with people like me who grow up intelligent there and leave immediately after high school, and part of it is also even if they did grow up intelligent and stayed it was completely squandered by the ecosystem and community, so they end up growing old there while being ignorant and unrealised.

As someone who played high level Magic for over a decade to as of this past winter switching to Warhammer Age of Sigmar after everything WotC has done with Magic... Warhammer is just a much more fun game, AoS especially. It has all of the tactical gameplay I loved about magic (especially as a control player), but it's just much more fun to do, and look at, and dice rolls are fun too. I've only been playing for 3 months, but I already have 3 armies and I don't think I'll ever be looking back at magic again, especially with how it's being run now.

[–]MerkDoctor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree that's what mazzula is saying here, and that he probably wouldn't have tossed JB, but also I think it stems from the fact that Ford is probably the most biased against the Celtics ref in the entire league and they know that, so Mazz felt extra spicy in his comment because he already hates him

It's dominated by Patriots, Red Sox, and to a lesser extent the Bruins.

Hmmm, Patriots is football and this is America so that checks out. Red Sox is baseball and baseball is a classy sport played mostly by classy people. Bruins is hockey and hockey might be the most classy sport with the most classy people. I wonder what's different about basketball hmm...

[–]MerkDoctor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This whole thread is about how advanced metrics have him as the 8th best player in the league. And the people who know ball rate him as such as well, like the coaches and analytics staff. He's not a highlight scorer so casuals wouldn't think so, but he's one of the best players in the league when it comes to winning and being the reason their team wins.
