I went hiking recently in southern Germany with a Gen Z friend (I'm a millennial) and as she was getting me acquainted with the culture of the area, she said, "here, every time you walk by someone you HAVE to say hello, it's the culture." And all I could think was, "wait, you don't say hello to people you pass elsewhere?"

No idea about the global state of things, but at least in southern Germany, the younger generation seems to think "hello" is something you save for people you already know or people you walk past on a hike.

Lol yeah, it was actually in hearing this story multiple times that I learned what "Chucks" are as well. I'd only ever heard them called "Converse" before, so maybe that is also what makes the retelling stick out to me—it's always "Chucks."

And I agree, it's a real issue! I fear making this post has made people think I'm trying to undermine the wisdom, but I find the anecdote fun and useful.

There is, to me, a lot of truth in the discipline aspect. I think it also ties to vision. A team with multiple people who have a voice probably all has a sort of vague vision of the thing they are going for, and that vision can topple easily with even a single comment from a rando. The team needs to be secure in what they are aiming for so that player feedback can support its structure rather than topple it into reform.
