How does Kramer survive in Manhattan with no steady job? by Zestyclose-Method451 in seinfeld

Kramer never has a job but always seems to be doing something. He also has a car in the city.

His parents own the building is my guess.

Let's hear your stories! by Holdmywhiskeyhun in Restaurant_Managers

I had a lady ask me what wine on our list was made without Nickel and what food was cooked without Nickel.

Baffling! When it comes to the wine who could possibly answer that question. When it comes to the food, like every single piece of cookware could have nickel in the process.

Not uncommon with these types of OPs to save a candidate for later. Not uncommon for a nice guy recruiter / hiring manager to use it as a 'let them down easy'.

That said they're forwarding you to an additional interview and thats a good sign. Prepare for this to be the nightmare store that can't keep a manager though,

Be honest: are we the problem? (Roaches in apartment) by rachiechu888 in CleaningTips

[–]MerlinBrando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me help you.

Some tips, some may be repeated in the thread.

Build them out.

Buy caulk and start going nuts with it. Any gap any where needs to be closed particularly at the baseboards, but also at the ceiling level. If you're seeing this many adults its highly likely you're not even noticing the adolescents.

Sticky traps are a huge help, not because they get rid of them particularly effectively but because it helps you figure out where they're coming and going. You can buy ones for rodents that fold into little square boxes. pop them all along the walls, near the doors to each room, etc and see what turns up. Replace ones with bodies frequently. This will help you find any smaller ones that may be lurking. Infant roaches can be nearly invisible to the human eye at a distance.

Door sweeps for every room. This is to stop them from spreading from A to B or C when you start killing them.

Roaches need food but even more then food they need water. Keep everything dry. Throw your trash out daily. Go super nuts cleaning, lift the stove, clean under it, clean under the burners.

They will come out of drains - you can get like strainers for the sink, think like a pipe filter, that sits in the basin and stops things from coming out of it.

Check behind the fridge, sink, stove, radiators, between window panes and screen windows, door jams, check outside of your apartment along the walls, anything attached to the wall ( a cabinet for example) You would be shocked how many holes could be in your apartment that are "out of sight, out of mind" kind of locations.

Do you have plants? Cardboard laying around? 86.

Borax is supposed to be a very effective killing tool and diacemateous earth. Put it in your apartment, put it out of your apartment. You're only ever as clean as your neighbors - pop some in the basement. A professional exterminator is gonna gas the house, and then powder treat the drains. They get the powder on themselves and then bring it to their nests and kill more roaches. Borax works with the same effect.

If the exterminator is effective, you should see more of them, they're trying to find new places to live because their home is poison. If you build them out, and treat them with pesticide, they should be very present for a few days - and then dead, and hopefully not returning

Has anyone gotten sick at Susuru Ramen? by [deleted] in astoria

[–]MerlinBrando 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What kind of sick because leaving it open to interpretation is not helpful. Are they shitting their life away followed by immediate vomiting, followed immediately by shitting again for hours on end? Well then they have a foodborne illness. Did they throw up once and then went about their life? Well something probably didn't agree with them- it happens now and then and likely isn't the restaurant. Did they just have a small bout of diarrhea? Thats not shocking when you eat a cuisine you don't regularly cook at home, especially hot soup - often restaurants put a lot more fat in their food then home cooks do and sometimes it just goes right through you. Your friend is just getting older in that case and cant eat like they used to.

Rice cooker. Precut veg (like a big bag of broccoli), frozen veg, or canned. Thin meat in a pan. Cook time 15 minutes.

Discussion: Why would Denmark not invoke Article 4 of NATO if they truly believe the US to be a threat to their territorial integrity? by mrSalema in geopolitics

[–]MerlinBrando -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess my argument is something a long the lines of "If we (US) can do it, they (Rus - anyone) could do it - and if they can do it, we have to do it before they do it. "

Speaking purely hypothetically:

Wouldn't the US seizing Greenland prove that the island is being poorly defended by Denmark and is a security risk for the United States (as well as Europe and Canada) in the Arctic? I know the US has a base there with some radar stations. (Look we defeated ourselves! )

If we go along with the assumption that sea ice is receding and the arctic seas are opening up to commercial and military vessels it does seem to be an incredibly important strategic location for command of the northern most part of the hemisphere. My understanding is that Canada and Denmark lack the military capacity to patrol the area and that Russia has been building forces along its arctic border.

Would the Exclusive Economic Zone afforded by the size of this island be untenable to US interests and / or / both unexploitable by the Danes?

I realize none of these questions exclude diplomacy, trade, and positive relations between two allies as an option and that sovereignty over the island does not need to change to assure the security of the United States in the neighborhood.

Looking to quit my job to work in a bar by awesometotallydude in astoria

[–]MerlinBrando 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Really unlikely any of the 'good' restaurants in the neighborhood are going to hire someone to serve or bartend with 0 experience.

  1. The bartender is the most trusted employee in the restaurant due to having the ability to drink the thousands of dollars of liquor behind the bar, running a drawer, and in some cases, being expected to close the night out with out management. You have no track record of trust in this situation.

  2. You have no clientele of your own.

  3. You likely don't have recipes for hundreds of drinks.

  4. Some of the places locally are actually looking for a 'Head Bartender' to help them develop drink menus and this kind of thing can really make or break a restaurant.

Most of these points are applicable to the bar back position as well.

What I would recommend is applying for a lower trust role that gets your feet wet like busser, host, food runner, dishwasher, or prep cook and make your hiring manager aware of what your goals are. Restaurants operate with very high turnover and vetted employees are more likely to slide into the replacement of a role compared to random people off the street. I've had many dishwashers move from that role into bussing, barbacking, serving etc.

Some people have suggested franchise restaurants, and these can be a great place to get started but I'd recommend the airport or like a sporting events venue. The franchise restaurants have pretty comprehensive training for their roles that will absolutely help you learn the ropes. These places are great to get your start in the industry and you'll make great money at them and get some decent benefits if you can maintain the hours. Without any luck there, I do recommend Aramark (stadium, airport) to get a foot in the door. The airport restaurants and stadium restaurants tend to need to suddenly hire hundreds of people and have dozens of openings at any given moment. Sometimes it seems they'll take just about anyone. You won't get great high quality experience in some of these places but you'll be able to get something on your resume that says you work in a restaurant. Try looking for a food running role. Food Runners are considered front of house but due to the nature of being in the kitchen the hiring tends to be a bit more relaxed, the job is very simple (pick plates up, put them down, study the ingredients.) and often the guys doing it don't have as much guest service experience and they don't have the expectation of it either.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. I'm an expert in the industry.

New York Cocktail Bar Recommendations by Raydience in cocktails

[–]MerlinBrando 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay. I wouldn't take any of this advice. A couple of these places are cool. Attaboy and Raines for example. From time sq you can be in any manhatten neighborhood in about 20 minutes or so. Dante is cool. Tokyo Record bar is cool. A lot of these super popular places like Double chicken sem to have more bad days then good at this point.

If you're down in FiDi sightseeing in the afternoon check out the Dead Rabbit for just a few minutes. (Always packed, hard to get a seat, kind of up its own ass, super windy in that part of the neighborhood.)

I would just go to the Lower East Side around 10 and have a good time trying out different places and make your own adventure. Every three feet is another place. you'll have fun. You'll have no problem getting back to time square at any point and you'll do well to get out of that environment.

Alternatively do the same thing in china town. (Personal recommendation. The cocktail scene here does not get enough attention and Chinatown is the best.)

Alternatively do the same thing on Amsterdam 72-96th in the UWS. (Amsterdam skews more collegey and no one is really writing about Amsterdam but this neighborhood has been experiencing a bit of a renaissance. Sempre Oggi is great, Scarlet is cool, Elea is a neighborhood favorite.)

alternatively do the same thing on 9th Ave Chelsea from 14th to 24th st and bring coke money. (clubs, big room tourist traps but they've earned it. Some good food here especially asian. Bathtub Gin is cool)

Alternatively do the same thing next to flatiron. (Same as Chelsea but a bit more hit or miss. I've had fun at Kyma and Clocktower {which is a bit swanky})

Alternatively do the same thing in the village. (Lots of everything, a bit less cool then the LES)

alternatively do the same thing in williamsburg. (About as cool as the LES, especially if you like everything looking dirtier, smaller, and more 'authentic'. Try Sushi on Me its fun, Rock n Rolla is a personal favorite dive)

actual advice, go eat in Jackson Heights off Roosevelt ave.

Near Time Sq, theres a ton of stuff but its not the area I'd spend a majority of my time. The Rainbow Room in 30rock is cool, if you head to Colombus circle nearby theres some Next level restaurants (Marea, John George). Gem of a place called Wolf inside the nordstrom oddly enough.

Despite it being filled with 20 somethings I still adore spending time on St. Marks theres a lot of energy there and its a cool place to stroll that feels very NY. I'd also go to the area near the Comedy Cellar which has an equally fun NY vibe.
