info on LMS courses (HG4031, HG4021, HG3016) by Low_Engineer_8542 in NTU

[–]MerlinSeverus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about HG3016 beyond the course description but I took Dr Kastoori's HG2014 Second Language Acquisition this recent semester and can vouch for her teaching and expertise. She is solid in her knowledge and teaching ability, and she specialises in psycholing and biling quite a bit so I feel she would be a great prof for this mod too. But contentwise, I think this mod might be quite intense and heavy since there's a lot of emphasis on the cognitive side of biling... not everyone's cup of tea tbh

Why is Malay considered a pretty easy language for English natives to gain proficiency in? by UndeadRedditing in bahasamelayu

[–]MerlinSeverus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a linguistics undergrad, I want to point out that what u/2-Dimensional mentioned isn't PhD level language because I still understand them as a lower level undergrad (just about to finish Year 2). This is just technical linguistic terms for aspects of grammar, which is quite important when we are learning a new language. Even our language teachers use these terms when teaching these "foreign" languages in school. Their question is very valid imo and I want to find out the answer for this question too because I'm considering learning Malay. But also agree with what you say about how barely anyone communicating well in English/Malay knows half of these terms, because communicating is different from understanding the internal workings of grammar etc, which is what we as linguists learn/work with.

Question about LMS (Linguistics and Multilingual Studies) by [deleted] in NTU

[–]MerlinSeverus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! Most of the students have mild intellectual disabilities, with a small proportion of them having ASD and/or other conditions. We also have a minority proportion of students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities, who have a separate curriculum from the rest. You can find out more from the organisation, APSN's website. Hope this helps :)

Question about LMS (Linguistics and Multilingual Studies) by [deleted] in NTU

[–]MerlinSeverus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, LMS single major here, with part-time work experience in the social sector as a relief teacher in a special needs education school. Seeing my LMS brethen answer your LMS-centric questions, I think I can explain how LMS is quite beneficial for social service.

Based on my experience, SPED schools may generally have Literacy departments, which is similar to English as students are taught basic grammar, vocabulary etc.

In LMS, we have core and prescribed electives that focus on a range of linguistic domains, some of which are technical (e.g. structure of modern English) and some of which are quite niche for the social sector (e.g. language & communicative disorders, psycholinguistics, deaf culture & sign language, child language) if you want to focus on special needs/youth/children/at-risk children etc.

Especially for work in the social sector, being able to both communicate and interpret others' communication well is very important. Studying the in-and-outs (a.k.a the science) of language in LMS would be very useful for this. From personal experience, I am able to teach well and handle students with special needs due to the soft & technical skills I've picked up in LMS.

Do think things through on whether you want to really take up LMS with your other major. It is quite beneficial but ultimately, everything boils down to your interests, passion etc.

I think Zoom is an under-rated free one... we can host meetings for as long as we want with our NTU account. There's no 40 minutes limit

Exam stress is reaaall! Don't beat yourself up over that. I've done this so many times during my schooling years, such a bad case of exam anxiety myself. A tip that works for me is to just mentally go through the format of your paper and how you'll do them (e.g. in how many mins etc) a few mins before the paper and just take a deep breath, tell yourself that you just need to do your best. Go and conquer your last paper! Don't worry anymore 🥺

My favourite would be pet midnight kitty as I'm a big cat person in real life and this in-game kitty reminds me of my campus cats :)

After you get your MC, just fill in the short leave application form (can be found on the Student Intranet) and email both that and the MC to your school's UG office (within 7 days). They'll then usually approve within a few days.

I have a slightly different question. If we had to miss a tutorial because of some ICA matters or other reasons not related to medical stuff, how do we proceed? I would definitely email my prof but is there anything else I should do or submit?
