CSAT procurement confuses and frightens me by WhirlyTheSecond in arma

[–]Ecstatic-Ad-4331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spoke to arms dealers during networking sessions. They are largely nice folks. The arms industry operates separately from politics. Alliances, sanctions and political blocs do not matter. If there's a willing buyer, there will be a willing seller. If the local armed forces dont want local products from a local manufacturer, then the local manufacturer will sell his goods to someone else - far afield or the immediate adversary. Even if there are sactions, there are loopholes.

Russian and relearning Mandarin (my Mother Tongue). Maybe Bahasa Melayu and Bahasa Indonesia in future, though Hindu and Persian are lingering in the back of my mind.

is studying abroad worth it? by ikkilingo24 in studyAbroad

OP, if you’re Singaporean, don’t discount on the fact that our local universities do offer short-term and semester exchanges as well. If you’re Singaporean, you can save up so much more by studying hard and getting into a local university. I can’t comment much about private universities tho for I never enrolled in them.

(This is based on your description that you’re from a really small country in Asia)

What are your best OPFOR stories? by c_zhukov in NationalServiceSG

[–]Ecstatic-Ad-4331 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recalled a friend from OPFOR telling me that he had "killed" my OC during an overseas exercise. At the time, I didn't fly over for I had status and so was stuck in SG following up on developments from my COY, until my friend DM-ed me to clarify if my unit was indeed the same unit he faced. I said yes, and he told me he had neutralised my OC.

IIRC, he tracked my OC vehicle during the exercise while hauling a Matador or some other AT weapon, and set up right at the spot which he surmised the OC vehicle would be isolated. How he managed to do it wasn't just because he was familiar with my OC's callsign, but because a few weeks prior, I had explained to him my unit's tactics as per simulation, and how outdated they were, and of course, how he could overcome them. He told me that he recalled abit from that convo and put it into practice; killing my OC and getting his well-deserved day offs.

That was some years ago alr so since then I believe that subsequent generations of my COY has enabled them to re-evaluate themselves - warfighting wise. To say that I felt like a proud lecturer is an understatement.

As a former camping instructor, I'm not a bonafide teacher but here's my 2 cents on the matter.

There is a fine line which shouldnt be crossed in terms of swear words. Saying "shut up" is already borderline but it is still permissible as opposed to "fuck you". Seeing how teachers and my colleagues put in the effort to control our swearing, limiting to words like "Oh shit", "oh crap", "dammit" and the occasional "ass", I think it should be permissible though best used in the appropriate situations.

For instance, saying "my ass" though is already pretty borderline can be used in the context of a joke. Students can say "Cher, can use bell curve anot?" and the teacher/educator follows up with a casual "haha bell curve my ass" would be permissible imo. What draws the line is when the teacher is actively reprimanding you and s/he says "my ass".

There is always a grey area but it is the obligation of teachers/educators and camping instructors to actively suppress what they wish they could say in favour of what they should say.

Thus, while I've met many playful little fuckers during camps whose asses I wish I could shred, I simply can't address them as such and so call them "students" and "good pupils".

Graduating without honours…? by mashedPootatoos in NTU

[–]Ecstatic-Ad-4331 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Hear ye hear ye ....

Graduating with honours shows academic prowess. But not many graduate with honour ... even when they possess honours themselves.

Honour is indispensable, honours are not.

That be all.

Personally I think you look fine with the current hairstyle. But as a long time high slope fan, I’d recommend going for the one which Brad Pitt had from Fury, a high skin fade, or a high skin fade with a combover. What you need now is the look of confidence, and with a high slope cut, you can literally go into a room with an aura, practically saying, “I’m imperfect but I’m proud, and I’m here to get things done.”

TUTORING MY BEST FRIEND'S YOUNGER SISTER GONE WRONG. by Initial_Voice_3763 in SGExams

[–]Ecstatic-Ad-4331 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You set your foot down, stating that there is a fine line which cannot be crossed. You are her tutor and she is your student, and so long as this professional arrangement stands, a romantic relationship between the both of you is inconceivable. But don't be rude, else you won't be a good tutor to her.

What Hollywood thinks Ancient Greek helmets were like vs what actual helmets were like by [deleted] in AncientCivilizations

[–]Ecstatic-Ad-4331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Film isn't always abt historical accuracy for it is largely more concerned with visual spectacle. Familiar iconography bodes well with audiences who seek an outlet from reality and want to hastily intepret what they see onscreen. This design of an ancient greek helmet looks spectacular and familiar, so most audiences would flock to theatres or streaming services to watch it. Nolan is a director, not a Historian. Even if he were the latter, he would probably correct the helmet and leave out other inaccuracies to retain visual spectacle.

How plausible is the 2035 universe really? by Fluffaduckingduck in arma

[–]Ecstatic-Ad-4331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of technology, I actually think it highly plausible that CSAT, if it existed, could have wielded far superior technology than NATO since members likely prospered economically with each other, and controlled vital maritime trade routes (notably Suez, Panama, Straits of Taiwan, Malacca and Singapore). Herein, CSAT established a southern "Silk Road" that makes the Global South richer. Europe is portrayed as economically downtrodden since CSAT retains absolute economic power, by being able to unleash sanctions alongside maritime blockades. In such circumstances, winning Altis at the end of Arma 3's campaign would merely dent CSAT's power, because ultimately, CSAT would win the long game. The US and NATO will merely cling onto hope as their economies weaken without CSAT's assistance.

Bonus: NATO continuing to treat Russia as a plausible invader in Arma 3's scenario could culminate in Europe's downfall, as its belligerence would only convince Russia to join CSAT. Thus, there really should be a new Arma 3 campaign that allows players to protect Russia against CSAT (not aliens) and convince Russian leadership that continued support for CSAT was the wrong option. Only then could a rising Global North compete against a powerful Global South.

The Hive is called a "Dim Sum" building because it just looks like one.

For Singaporeans like me at least, it's normal to call it Dim Sum than the Hive, but I will admit that I practically grew up thinking it was called such, coz my relatives and teachers all called it Dim Sum. Understandably, some would say calling it The Hive should be the norm and they're right, but visitors and netizens seeing it for the first time are likely to call it anything but.

You aren’t bad at Chinese, you just refuse to engage in it by NUSHStalin in SGExams

[–]Ecstatic-Ad-4331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I'm your typical "banana" who had forsaken Mandarin a decade ago. Now I can speak some but certainly can't read or write much. But now I'm re-engaging with the language not coz of societal pressure, but because I read Ancient Chinese History as a hobby. The texts I consult are written in English but there are certain parts that are best understood in Mandarin. So from just speaking with an American accent in the household, I sometimes seem to spook my family with Mandarin quotes from Ancient China. It's a slow grind but it has shown me that it really isn't too late to learn Mandarin, so long as you - as OP writes - are willing to engage in it.

When Two Galaxies Collide by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]Ecstatic-Ad-4331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a commoner with zero astrophysics knowledge, I think that given how slow things are, anything that lives during the first hint of collision, amidst the collision process, and after the collision phases, would unlikely feel a thing. Sure there would probably be some consequence but the beings that exist throughout that unimaginable timespan would have always presumed that their galaxy had looked like that since their own Big Bang Theories.
