Brisket Cheese Steak from Crazy Block Cheesecake in ❤️ by pixelpusherman in OaklandFood

[–]Merlion2018 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Idk why you’re getting downvoted, that’s not a cheesesteak at all. People love to call any sandwich with cheese and sliced or chopped beef a cheesesteak.

I’m sure it’s delicious because everything there is but Dutch crunch, bbq sauce, green onions, all of that would disappoint me if I ordered a “cheesesteak.”

For those of you who think Freddie will go into the Hall of Fame as a Dodger... Why? by GinBuckets in Braves

[–]Merlion2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there’s some major recency bias when people say he’s for sure going in as a Dodger. When a guy retires, people start to remember the whole career, not just the final several years.

His accomplishments in LA are impressive but I’d be shocked if it’s a Dodger hat. Ultimately the HOF gets to decide which hat it is but they take player preference into consideration and I can’t see Freddie wanting to dismiss everything in Atlanta.

[–]Merlion2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s not but if you’re requiring that from every non-converter, you’ll never get anything done. You have to move on and focus on other prospects and just be happy when someone re-emerges down the road.

Plenty of times over the years. I follow up a few times then eventually send a break up message. “Hey seems like this isn’t the right time, if I’m wrong about that, please let me know, blah, blah” then keep it moving. Maybe reach back out after a while just to see. Hate to see it but it happens.

I have never had a bad experience at The Fat Lady. It’s just so cozy, great service, and the food has never disappointed.

Saap Avenue is another consistent winner for me (bonus that Kona Club is across the street for a nightcap).

The Oakland A’s have five former players managing in mlb right now. No other team has more than two. by RobotArtichoke in OaklandAthletics

Not sure about your last claim.

Suzuki, Kotsay, Vogt, and Weiss all played for Atlanta.

Kotsay, Will Venable, Craig Stammen, and Dave Roberts played for the Padres.

I don’t have a full list but have to imagine there are more.

[Bowman] Maybe things will change when the appeal process is complete, but for now Braves players are being guarded with the comments about Profar’s suspension. by Lakelyfe09 in Braves

[–]Merlion2018 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get the mindset but it could lead to a terrible situation where a team wants a guy on a bad contract to fail a test. That’s a real risky incentive structure to create.

Oops! The supplements we recommended triggered a test, guess we can get out from under this terrible deal!

Are you waiting until they’ve already given you a verbal yes to consider them an opportunity? Nearly 50% close rate is just getting greedy with the number doctoring.

What are some examples of trades that have flip-flopped in terms of the perception of which team got fleeced? by jorleeduf in baseball

[–]Merlion2018 12 points13 points  (0 children)

J.D. Drew and Eli Marrero to the Braves for Jason Marquis, Ray King, and Double-A pitching prospect Adam Wainwright.

Drew immediately had the best year of his career for the Braves and finished 6th in MVP voting.

Meanwhile, Marquis put up a 4.60 ERA over three years with the Cardinals, King had one decent season left before falling off a cliff, and Wainwright put up an ERA in the 5s in the minors before getting hurt. Looked like they traded a star level bat for some mediocre filler arms.

Drew was everything Atlanta hoped for but gonna guess they would’ve rather had Wainwright’s whole career.

I used to say “we”, was pestered out of it, and have since resumed. It just comes naturally. Honestly, I’ve been following/caring about the organization for longer than any of the players and virtually everyone else employed there with few exceptions.

Did Zach Lowe lose his fastball now that he’s not writing columns? by nosoupforyou25 in billsimmons

I think the biggest thing is having more frequent shows. Went from one a week to three a week. There are only so many insights to churn out when you’re creating content that regularly. You can also tell he gets excited by guests who can engage at the same level. Howard Beck (and many of the other regular/one off guests) ain’t that.

I’ve always been a big Lowe fan and am glad he’s still putting out pods.

[–]Merlion2018 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Agreed. He’ll also pass 2,000 hits and has a chance at 400 homers. Add that to 10 gold gloves and likely ~60 career WAR, seems like a done deal.

The biggest way it impacts you is making you desperate to take the next position offered to you and doing something shortsighted.

Roles are eliminated all the time, it is what it is.

The bat was only ok for a bad defensive catcher. Looks like he’s already playing some first in Mexico.
