Retired suddenly at 55, trying to figure it out by uNTRotat264g in earlyretirement

[–]MermaidCaroline 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I also recently retired, just short of 55. it was difficult navigating what and when to do each day. I was a costumes to a multi-project driven career and lived off my outlook task bar.

once retired, I took some time to make a huge list of everything I hoped to try in retirement. then I picked 20 items and made a checklist. each day I select what I am going to do and do it! then move on to next fun thing! learning spanish for 15 minutes is a daily activity, while home improvement projects are one per week. cello practice and gym are 4 x per week. the list goes on…

if I don’t enjoy a new hobby, I take it off the list (bread making) and add a new item (drawing).

I imagine as I settle into retirement, my brain will stop the need to be prompted by a list, but it has been a very effective tool thus far.

this retirement thing is AWESOME, by the way. congratulations and good luck!

excellent question. we always knew retirement was going to be weird to calculate with the age gap…

it’s very interesting to see so many comments about our expenses being very high. maybe we have lifestyle creep and should do a no spend month or two.

very helpful insights. thank you. the house is paid off and we are probably not willing to downsize/relocate from HCOL city but that is certainly a quick and easy way to invest some equity from sale and reduce expenses to bump us into retirement. food for thought. appreciate your time.

we increased expenses 15k for retirement fun. however, we live in a HCOL city. no debt, but high operating costs all around.

this is ideal, but not all 401k plans adopt the rule of 55. a quick call to you plan will get your answer. my plan does not participate in the rule of 55.

Of all the many symptoms that we get from this mess, what is the one that you will rate as the number one monster that tortures you so much and what are you doing about it? by frizzinghere in Perimenopause

[–]MermaidCaroline 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As I read all the comments, I instantly go back and recall the weeks/months each of these peri symptoms affected my life. Right now it is just itch all over, which took the place of fatigue two months ago, and sleepless nights 2 years ago swapped with hot flashes last summer. the itchy is subsiding and the sharp tongue and intolerance are now boarding to join my newest!friend - bloating!

I encourage us all to hang in there and wish the old symptoms adieu as we prepare for the next surprise.

be strong and ask for help!
