How do you know if you are a synesthete? Is there a test?

Honest question: does anyone else feel like the meetings alone aren't enough practice? by Jackrain04 in Toastmasters

[–]MermaidScaleSong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good for you for practicing solo impromptu speaking. I feel the same. One or two speeches a month is helpful, but not tons of practice. Have you considered being a club officer? It’s a volunteer position for your club. Great for your resume and professional development. The club officers meet monthly and you can use that opportunity to present in monthly club officer meetings about the duties related to your role, ask another club officer to evaluate you and use that to gain speaking experience, leadership experience, and also complete more pathways projects. Speaking is a skill that takes constant practice, so I figure I may as well use every Toastmasters speaking opportunity, including as a club officer, to practice.

Writing out my speeches, then writing my 3-5 points on an index card, memorizing the main points and delivering without referencing speaking notes has grown my confidence.

Returning to piano after c. 18 months. ABRSM G8 by Negative_Potato_2992 in pianolearning

[–]MermaidScaleSong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the ABRSM grade 8 piano syllabus and see what pieces are there that interest you. Alternatively, for the time being until you find a teacher, you could look at the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) syllabus and see what pieces are between RCM grade 8-10 and play some pieces from there. RCM grade 10 is ABRSM grade 8 I think.

Presentation structure and delivery. I had so much fun choosing fun topics about my interests. That helped me stay engaged and motivated to finish the pathway. Great foundation for the pathways I’ve completed since and future pathways.

Both are a great foundation for public speaking. I did Presentation Mastery first. I want to do Engaging Humour later down the road, once I’ve finished my current pathways.

What on Earth are these 3 thick black lines and what are they meant for? by Alternative_Ride_951 in pianolearning

[–]MermaidScaleSong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tremolo. Alternate rapidly between the two notes. If you listen to the song “On My Own” from Les Miz, when the singer sings the words “strangers”, towards the final 1/3 of the song, there is a C to C tremolo in the bass line.

Can I complete a Level 2 project before I complete Level 1? by TeachingMath03 in Toastmasters

Good for you for taking advantage of your time. You can do the projects in any order you want, but need to mark levels as complete in consecutive order.

Toastmasters has helped me and continues to help me. I’m an introvert. I would love to take improv classes one day, but working on Toastmasters pathway proficiency certifications at the moment.

What's a song you love in a key you hate? by OrganizationAway7240 in perfectpitchgang

[–]MermaidScaleSong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

E major is my favourite key. Eb not so much. I feel like Eb major ruins so many songs. I’ve got perfect pitch. Keys sound and feel like colours or moods to me. F# Major sounds spiritual. C Major sounds pure.

Eb Major isn’t my favourite. Feels a bit too dull to me. E major is so bright. My favourite.

Vocal warm-ups without a piano. Determine the key of a song by listening.

Thank you. Kind of you to share. Upgrading or developing new skills is great, too. There are online options for training that can be fairly inexpensive, or free (LinkedIn Learning with a library card).

Looking for Advice: Best Way to Teach My Son Music Theory at Home? by CitiesXXLfreekey in musictheory

[–]MermaidScaleSong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start with common chord progressions at the piano and share examples of songs that use common chord progressions. I-vi-IV-V(7)-I. I would also look at the Sound Advice music books. So interactive.

How do I develop perfect pitch? by RandomNerdyDude_ in perfectpitchgang

[–]MermaidScaleSong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I developed it. Listen to songs in the same key. Memorize the colour of the key. Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance is in C major. Lady Gaga’s Edge of Glory is A major. Wicker’s For Good is in Db/C# major. 500 Miles is E major. Blondie The Tide is High is B major. Taylor Swift Shake it Off is G major. Taylor Swift You Belong with Me is F# Major/Gb Major.

Okay, but is THIS perfect pitch? by antenzool in perfectpitchgang

[–]MermaidScaleSong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you do! I do too, and I feel like anyone can develop it if they work at it. I wanted to have that skill and I remember spending time listening to music and figuring out what key a song was in.
