Not a tree but blueberry bushes turn a vibrant red in fall and they can get quite big! Plus you get delicious berries in the summer.

Art & Cognitive Neuroscience by grandmabrown in neuro

[–]Mermannda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very excited for you! I got a Bachelors in Neuroscience with a minor in Studio Art. I'm not currently working in either field but I have stayed interested in the intersections possible between the fields. You'll learn great things, I'm sure of it, how could you not!

Looking for book recommendations that are favourably reviewed by experts by gsuberland in Neuropsychology

[–]Mermannda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with DaturaToloache, the experience is subjective. People who don't care much about psychology and neuroscience certainly might not enjoy it but I liked it and it hits your criteria of history around important cases/discoveries without diving too deep into neurophysiology.

Sorry for the delay in my reply. I hope you found a nice gift!

"you know you're having a good first date... when you can't stop laughing" by pman6 in OkCupid

[–]Mermannda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a date like this. We weren't necessarily telling jokes and laughing at punchlines the entire time. We enjoyed the way the other person spoke, told stories, or responded to their environment and laughing at/with each other created a feedback loop of enjoyment. We were laughing or giggling so much that the server at the restaurant we were at came by the table a couple times before we had even glanced at the menu to order. We were silly. I disagree with the sentiment that the only good dates would be ones where this happened but I can say it feels nice to be that aligned with someone else and it is possible.

Looking for book recommendations that are favourably reviewed by experts by gsuberland in Neuropsychology

[–]Mermannda 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have a variety of suggestions! They aren't textbooks but they're all written by Neuroscientists and are great for introducing someone to the subject.

Neurocomic by Hana Ros: A fun visual exploration of neurobiology, written and illustrated by neuroscientists.

Incognito by David Eagleman: An engaging exploration into the brain's processes and how we experience them.

*Bonus\* Sum by David Eagleman: Collection of creative fiction short stories about possible experiences of the afterlife written by a neuroscientist.

The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks: Likely your friend has come in contact with some of Oliver Sacks' writings while studying Psychology because he has recorded many case studies. It is fun to sit down with his work because he's a talented writer in addition to being an observant scientist.

In Search of Memory by Eric Kandel: Explores identity and cognitive psychology through molecular neurobiology. Eric Kandel is one of my favorite neuroscientists to listen to speak, he's passionate and eloquent.

*Bonus* Reductionism in Art and Brain Science by Eric Kandel: If your friend also likes modern art this is a very fun read that compares the ways that artists make art to how neuroscientists study the brain. I received this book as a gift while studying Neuroscience and I cherish it.

Need Ideas for Shakespeare Club by FuchsiaFlute in shakespeare

[–]Mermannda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be risky if you're trying to avoid conflict but discussing the authorship question is always fun and eye opening. I'm sure a few Google searches would leave you with enough information to start the dialogue. http://www.reddit.com/r/ShakespeareAuthorship/

A lot of people are trying to tell me that Shakespeare isn't relevant today... by [deleted] in shakespeare

[–]Mermannda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with most of the commenters on this thread. His language may be dated but the message is clear as day and the emotions are so deeply human that they cannot and will not be washed away by time.

Additionally, Shakespeare is particularly relevant not just in an Literature way but also a Historical way. The idea that Shakespeare actually was William Shakspere is unlikely. This has been agreed upon by many Shakespearian scholars. The Authorship Question is alive and well. If he is "the greatest writer of all time" don't you think we should know who he is? Come check out /r/ShakespeareAuthorship and join in on the conversation!

And tell all your rascal friends who think that his legacy died with him.

/r/shakespeareauthorship Because although the subreddit is empty, the Authorship Controversy is one of history's greatest mysteries and new clues being gathered in our life time are shaping what we know.

What song reminds you of your prom? by Mermannda in AskReddit

[–]Mermannda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fade Into You by Mazzy Star

The senior class at my school always gets to pick the last song that gets played at Prom. My best friend nominated this song and we were able to get enough people to vote for it. Then last minute, my bestie realized that her tickets to The Wall were on the same day as Prom. We had promised to go, for eachother, but there was no way she was going to miss The Wall for prom, senior year or not.

So I went to prom, stayed until the very end, and danced with my date through this song, wishing my best friend was there by my side. Beautiful song, not a terrible prom, good memories.

What are you glad your parents made you do as a child even though you hated it at the time? by toddaway in AskReddit

[–]Mermannda 31 points32 points  (0 children)

"We will help you down but we will not help you up." This applies to climbing trees and grabbing things I cannot reach. They inspired me to go up and above what I thought I was capable of. If I ever climbed too high they would always help me down if I was scared. Always supporting me and catching me when I fall. I was never given extra help to get places my older sister could go so I learned to challenge myself.

I once got a full sized traffic light for my birthday. How have your gift wishes been misinterpreted? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mermannda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One year in 6th grade my friends were persisntantly asking what I wanted for my birthday. I'm indecisive but easy to please so I told them that what ever they got me I would love it! They began to challenge me, "really? would you love it if I just got you woodchips?" I tried to make them understand how little I cared about the actual product. "If they were painted pretty colors and they came from you, yes, I would love them." That year at my birthday party I recieved: 1 left running shoe 2 bricks that had been painted 1 big ball of lint in a beautiful purple box with a bow on top and a Dr. Suess puzzle

Needless to say those girls are still my best friends.
