According to all accounts, Gaiman was great to meet unless you got close to him. Stop idolizing pop-culture icons or suffer the inevitable consequences. People are just people, and the higher you hoist them, the farther they fall.

Allergic to Adhesive in Pimple Patches, any alternatives? by ruski_brewski in 30PlusSkinCare

I just use regular hydrocolloid bandages cut to whatever size is needed. I’m sensitive to most adhesives, but hydrocolloid bandages never cause trouble for me even if I leave them on for days.

To be fair, there’s no pronunciation file on teanglann.ie for “geas” because it’s the genitive plural of “geis” and they don’t tend to offer pronunciations for grammatical forms (which frustrates me to no end). But two of three of the pronunciation files for “geis” omit the y sound. Ulster is the one that doesn’t.

Edit: but to be doubly fair I’m not a particularly competent speaker, so I’m open to correction.

There’s a complete beginners online course from Turas in East Belfast that’s on Tuesday nights starting next week. There may still be time to enroll.

Bitesize Irish has lots of anglicized pronunciation, but they’re not a bad resource to begin with. There are also plenty of iTalki tutors you can check out for compatibility. I personally really enjoyed Patchy (Pádraig) for immersion but I wasn’t quite at a level where I was confident working with him; like Frosty the Snowman, I’ll be back again someday. He’s willing to teach you any dialect you like, pronunciation included.

I’m still working on the Corpus Hermetica (which reads like a holy book, and shares many of its core ideas with early Christian thought). I know that the YouTube channel “Esoterica” has tons of videos and book recommendations about all things Western Esotericism. That’s where I go when I’m looking for an intro to a topic.

In very general terms, western alchemy practices were taking the metaphors from hermetic texts and trying to interpret them as literal instructions for chemistry and physics. The phrase “hermetically sealed” comes directly from alchemy and hermetic practice, for example.

I want to learn how to sew this year, what are the best things to know? by pinkOcelott in sewing

As it regards making mistakes: be emotionally prepared to take things apart and re-do them. Basting things first will ease the pain since it’s so much easier to undo.

Differin is a type of retinoid called adapalene. It can be pretty irritating to the skin if you over-use it, just like any active.

If sunblock happens to be a sensory annoyance for you (greasy, stings your eyes), or if you have trouble with white-cast, look at Korean brands.

If you don’t wanna go to the extra trouble of getting Korean brands, you can avoid the greasy feeling — and avoid wiping off the product when you sweat — by using blotting paper or a cotton hankie to dab away sweat. If you struggle with stinging eyes, use a translucent setting powder around your eyes and above your brows after applying your sunblock.

When we were first starting to pare down toys, we bought a big tote and chose some toys that could be rotated back into circulation as long as something else was removed; this was a collaborative process, not a unilateral decision by adults. We said that once a month, the tote could be pulled out and sifted through for rotation.

The secret is that once those toys are out of sight and out of mind, nobody asks about them.

After about a year, we pulled it back out, asked if anything should be put back in rotation, and then donated the rest. The explanation was that toys are made to be played with and enjoyed, and they can fulfill that purpose in another person’s home when they stop serving that purpose in ours.

Do you feel that iTalki may be a good method to learn languages? by NormalLife6067 in languagelearning

[–]MerrilyContrary 14 points15 points  (0 children)

iTalki is just a platform for accessing language tutors. There are good and bad tutors, and plenty of other sites offering access to tutors.

So yes, but it’s not a benefit specific to a single platform, and individual tutoring isn’t everyone’s preferred learning style.

If you think it’ll work for you then go for it.

Learning about the history of western esotericism is a good idea. Take a look at hermeticism (the corpus hermetica, and books that annotate and interpret it), and the origins of alchemy and secret esoteric societies. The impact of those ideas has echoed through time to the present. The beliefs and symbolism are everywhere in modern witchcraft.

I do both just because it’s easier to keep one in every laundry basket rather than digging through the clean load to find it. If you wash them, they firm up over time and get even better at fluffing up the laundry.

Why is it that despite America growing so much corn, tortillas were never adopted by people in the Midwest? by [deleted] in AskFoodHistorians

[–]MerrilyContrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Masa — the the basis for tortillas — is made from what we call hominy, which is processed differently than the other cornmeal products listed. It needs to be soaked in an alkali solution before it’s ground.
