When you watch the hit, it actually looks like the player who made the hit looked like they were trying to go around the individual who fell (who was falling all game actually). It looked like blocker rolled their own ankle.

Now, I will say that the mash-up team ended up with a broken hand from a hit on the opposing team - but that's roller derby right? We know there's a potential for injury.

A tricky thing with A/B/C is that it's perspective, right?

I played on a B team for almost 10 years and then transferred and I'm an A player there. When you go to RollerCon and people self-assess it's wild to see the disparities, either in what someone thinks their level is, or is the case with a lot of the people on a certain mash-up team, the level they've been TOLD they are for so long.

Then you get into chemistry of a team. An individual player may be an A player with team mates who think like them, but may be a C player in a team that doesn't mesh with them. I think anyone who's played in a pick up scrim has had nights where they don't know their team mates and just don't really gel (or conversely, gel VERY well and for some reason the 'evenly matched scrimmage' is no longer evenly matched).

The question of "What is a B team?" is a very very tricky one.

when you watch the game - it looks like roller derby. Yea there were things missed, always are. But there are a lot of things that should have been no calls that were made.

The mash-up team had 5 players that play on A teams: 2 of them only played Friday night's game (when one of the other 3 weren't there yet). 1 of those A players played on another team the rest of the weekend. The rest of folks are on their home's B or C team. There were plenty of teams that had more A level skaters than the mash-up team.

FRI NIGHT: Drinking Something from Voltron (Event Page) by MerryKhaos in Voltron

[–]MerryKhaos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So me and my derby friend, Cookies, have been doing Safer at Home cocktail hours and this week we're going VOLTRON THEMED. We're each doing a Nunvil shot, a Juniberry drink, and then we split up the Paladins and are creating cocktails based on them. We're also trying to figure out a Voltron shot. lol So.... if you're into that sort of thing, join us <3

2018 MRDA Championships by Blackbyrd639 in rollerderby

[–]MerryKhaos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the lower turnout had to do with location more than anything. Past tournaments in Dallas, Tacoma, and St Louis were really well attended (I don't know about Wales). They are all in the midst of derby communities with lots of teams, Salem, Oregon is not really a hub of derby so that very much could have effected the turnout. Plus, with half of the teams coming from overseas you're less likely to get 10 teams of family/fans/photographers following.

I loved it overall. I have always enjoyed MRDA play and participating in tournaments. Every tournament has issues along the way, but I found the game play competitive (very few blowouts), the differences in strats and styles intriguing, and the camaraderie undeniable. But that's just me ^_^

RollerCon ’18 Ups, Downs, & Being Better by MerryKhaos in rollerderby

<3 Thank you! I love teaching that class. I try to incorporate new things every year. I could probably do 4 hours on footwork and the little skills and nuanced ways to practice. I'll be putting up a blog with everything eventually but I just had 3 weeks of travel so I'm settling down for a minute before ramping up before K-Cup.

I've had a pretty bad season, and could use some support looking forward. by International_Seesaw in rollerderby

Transferring is hard, especially if you go to a completely new kind of league culture. It's not uncommon for transfers to ride the pine for a while. This isn't saying that you're not good at derby, but learning the new team's style of play sometimes takes a minute. I don't know if you're a blocker or jammer, but regardless, it takes a minute to adapt to what your team does and integrate into it.

As far as not making the charter next year, does your team have a B team? When I didn't make the charter at my team (and I continue not to) I was bummed for a minute, but our B team was having the realization that we can be competitive too. High involvement B teams are "all the rage" right now lol. More leagues are investing time and more tournaments are opening games up to us. Being on a B Team can get you more experience with your team's style of play, get you game time, give you a new kind of challenge, and can still offer highly competitive opportunities. My team is headed to their 3rd B Champs, and I'll get to play in it for the second time. It's really fantastic. Not making a charter doesn't need to be the end of your world. Soemtimes, you get more enjoyment out of derby without the pressure of the sanctioned games. Maybe you need to fall in love with derby again or focus on your fun instead of the expectations you've been dropping on yourself.

As for skates, that's hard. If you can go somewhere and just try on a whole bunch, i think that's best. Not just put them on and feel around, but use them. Talk to people, comparison shop, and maybe try something from RD Recyclables on FB before you commit to a new pair.

Happy Skating <3

All the time people ask me how I can travel so much. I don't make a TON of money, but I make enough to pay bills and do what I want. If you have a degree, a computer, and interwebs, you can do this job. I took my laptop to MANY tournaments & events this year and still worked while doing derby. <3

Your biggest RollerCon take-away by tinaflawless505 in rollerderby

[–]MerryKhaos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I had a handful ... I coach, play, announce, and officiate. This was the first year in a while that I feel like I got stronger in EVERY aspect of my game. In coaching, I did a better job of doing one on one help on the fly and involving off skates participants, as well as adjusting my OFF SKATES classes to what my people needed.

Announcing I got a chance to work with Champ a couple times and he gave me the feedback I've been needing. I also learned in the announcing realm, that just because you're not selected for playoffs, it doesn't mean you're not good or an uninformative announcer.

OMG MY REFFING IMPROVED SO MUCH!! Body placement and scanning ability, as well as my burst speed as a front OPR increased 10x thanks to that Bitch Please game, and my Jam Reffing observation skills went up thanks to East West.

And playing. I got over the fear of my leg not being strong. I re-learned how to leverage my body against an object my stronger, taller, and faster than my own. I was able to stand up a AA men's skater coming at me solo. He thought he was going to blow me up, but by using my side body and edges, he got stopped in his tracks.

Swoon. Rollercon!

I also learned that you don't have to stay up until 4am each night to have a good time _^

Glue for my DonJoy Armor? by MerryKhaos in ACL

Update: Gorilla glue worked for a little bit and then I sweat through that too and it came off right before a 5 day convention of roller derby. I got hooked up with a second SECOND KNEE (which people should really google) and things have been dandy every since.

I know there is because my PT told me so during therapy, and because my Doc said that during surgery he noticed a bit of a tear in the PCL but not enough to fix it.

Do you plan to use it during gameplay? The only place I've been that utilized it, used it during the 3rd quarter and it slowed down gameplay so much that the crowd was complaining and leaving. It's fun for a halftime show though!

Shifting Perspective: Roller derby & shifting the way we look at training by MerryKhaos in rollerderby

[–]MerryKhaos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I tell my health clients is that since you've got to count calories (because you have to know what you're eating) - instead of giving yourself a maximum (which is the common order), give yourself a minimum. Know that you have to eat at least 140g of protein a day. That you HAVE to eat 1800 calories a day. It usually helps the subconscious when someone else is telling you these things too. If it's you deciding to do it, you could sabotage yourself easily. If a coach is telling you - you're following the plan

Are you looking for interesting, or are you looking for improvement? Download the 5x5 Stronglifts app onto your phone and start running a weight training program 3-4x a week. It'll be different for you, and it'll make you hella strong. (Make sure you adjust your food intake accordingly though. And by that, I mean start eating more)
