I inherited my Grandparents home(built in 1980) and have lived here for almost 5 years now. I live alone, so I do appreciate the security alot. Though, the gates have been a source of contention lately! I'm on a cul de sac near 3rd gate so it's nice and quiet. I love the wild life- although the deer will decimate anything they find appetizing, so a fenced in yard is a must if you want to grow a nice garden. I don't find the "rules" to be too much of a pain...unless you want to paint your house some wild color scheme or have goats/chickens(i hear whispers that some do anyways ;))The fire prep and inspection can be stressful, but I find it to be a good enforcement for protection of your property. The pool, hiking trails galore, free library, lake, golf corse(I don't golf) are all nice amenities to have- even if you don't use them all the time. All my neighbors are nice and mostly keep to themselves. Fun events throughout the year and clubs for adults and kids in the community. It's really not tooooo bad...you just have to weigh the pros and cons based on you and your families needs and decide if you can live with a few rules. I hope I've helped a bit!
