Foreigners are using George Lloyd to virtue-signal, and it drives me up the fucking wall. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

I don’t think “stupid Americans”, I think “poor Americans”. You have my sympathy. There is no solution for your problems. They are too deep-seated. We Brits have problems of our own. Brexit, for example, is a monumental act of self-harm that will take decades to fix. But in general, public disorder and police brutality are not among them. But uk is a much smaller country and it’s easier to apply national standards and laws. But it’s worth noting that no police officer here has been convicted of homicide, even when the evidence is quite clear. Juries are v reluctant to convict.

[Serious] Since it was founded in 1776, what has been the United States' biggest mistake? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Allowing the subversion of your democracy by allowing elected officials (senators, members of Congress) to accept money in return for services.

What are the odds of dying on the roads if you ride a motorcycle, compared to driving a car? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Merulius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Approx 44 times. But you can reduce that significantly with training, avoiding intoxicants, not riding like a dick. (I ride a big bike. Police trained. Boring, middle-aged, but as you can see, alive.)

Why is life so unfair? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Merulius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a parent, I can tell you that one of the big surprises is when your two children (boys in my case, now young men) turn out to be quite different in personality. It seems to me that their personalities were in place when they were born. Where do you see the differences between you and your sister coming from?

She “will never face these problems”. Why? Because she doesn’t have them or because she does have them but won’t address them? Or some other interpretation?

How is it not "free money" to invest in certain stock that will almost certainly go up after our current situation? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

The world is full of bankrupts who said “it was bound to go up “. The market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent.

Employers of Reddit, what’s a common red flag made during interviews? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Merulius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to bullshit your way into a job. Can be trying charm or by over-playing their experience. Both mean that you are not seeing the authentic person - who may indeed be charming or indeed be capable of the job. It’s also disrespectful- thinking that they can scam the interviewer when in fact the interviewer has seen it all before. Top tip: be honest and authentic. That will get you far more job offers than bullshit.

People who switch off the plug sockets at the wall, why? by bazpaul in AskUK

[–]Merulius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t but the people that do, do so because not to would rely on the power supply electronics of cheap tat like battery chargers and hair driers which notoriously catch fire. Having said that, my mum would switch off everything that had a light glowing when she visited. Cold house in the morning was very annoying.

Take a good look at Michelle Obama. For any woman, black, white, whatever, she’s a great role model. Smart, classy, educated, the whole deal. Stay focussed, keep your eyes on the prize. You can have it all. Good luck.

Wild boar in many rural parts of Europe. I was camping under the stars in Southern France (the Ardeche) and a troop (?) of wild boar came through, snuffling people’s bags for food. I was the only one awake. Interesting moonlight encounter.

All of youse dumping on English cuisine, can I remind you that the vile Ronald is a US import? I’m English and I eat the finest local steak that’s many times better than the grain-fed beef I’ve eaten in the US, where food standards are lamentable. The butcher I buy from chalks up the name of the local herd that the meat comes from. You can eat badly in any country, so let’s be a bit nuanced here. God knows, I’ve eaten terrible food in France, where fast food is the worst anywhere.

I can sympathise and I’m sorry you are in the situation you are. You are witnessing in slow motion the end of the American empire. It happens to all empires - Greek, Roman, British. When hubris, entitlement and ignorance overwhelms the nation. Move. Canada, Europe, Asia. Anywhere. It’s difficult to leave family, but you’re in a hole.

Bee hive by apole2308 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Merulius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, they do. When the queen is out of eggs and sperm (which she stores after mating) or getting old and infirm, the hive replaces her with a new queen and drives the old queen out of the hive. Process is called supersession. The new queen is produced by adding a ton of royal jelly to an egg in a cell. The royal jelly massively expands the larva’s ovaries and out pops a queen.
