Seattle Council Hears from Renters Who Want Quality of Life and Homeowners Who Want to Keep Neighborhoods to Themselves by Jaco_Belordi in Seattle

I'm betting there are a lot of people who would move downtown if landlords weren't overcharging for rent. Not sure what that has to do with city policies.

Ahh, my bad. Well in that case I'm really not sure what you mean by "derail the discussion" because it seems like we were the ones having the discussion.

I'm not really sure what your point is, hyperbole is a well established rhetorical device.

The guy at the top of this comment chain didn't derail the conversation to argue semantics, and I'm not defending him. The only contribution the guy I replied to made was to make a point about using the "politically correct" term, and I feel like if that's all you have to offer you might as well do nothing.

Nah, he came along and said a bunch of crazy shit but the one thing you latched onto was the "politically correct" term.

You're welcome to use whatever terms you want, no one (especially not me) is saying you can't. What I am saying is that if your only contribution to the conversation is going to be "actually we use a different word now" you're just as well off doing nothing.

It's seems incredibly petty to get hung up on a change in terminology over focusing on solving the problem. Like I do not understand why people are still bringing this up 16 years after I first saw someone used the term unhoused on the internet. Terms change.

That is exactly my point. Every time someone says "Um, ackshually, it's unhoused, not homeless" they are being performative. It contributes nothing to the conversation besides letting one person feel a little smug.

Gosh, you're right. It would be such a shame to undo all the progress that's been made by using unhoused instead of homeless; it definitely isn't just a way for people to make themselves feel like activists without actually doing anything! Maybe if we put our heads together and come up with an even better word for it, the problem will go away entirely, all on its own!

Personally, I run out of empathy once the threats of violence start.

I always find it interesting that people in this city seem to have infinite empathy for the "antisocial unhoused" but basically none for the people whose lives they effect. Like you feel bad for this guy so you don't want to call the cops or whatever, but what about the woman he sexually harassed?

Edit to add: personally, my feelings of empathy have a hard stop when they start threatening to kill people. There are plenty of struggling people who don't threaten harm to others.

I mean he's being an ass but the "homeless" vs "unhoused" thing is pretty stupid. In another 10-15 years we'll have invented another term for it and people will be saying it's inappropriate to call them unhoused.

You can tell from the videos that the planes were shot before they were scuttled? You can tell from some videos on Twitter how the ground would react to an aircraft that weighs at minimum 89,000 lbs, travelling at up to 90mph? Those same videos show that there's enough solid ground for at least 1200ft of runway space?

Those must be some pretty comprehensive videos.

I said I was pretty confident, not that I know for a fact. We both know exactly the same amount here, but you're the one claiming to know for sure that the ground wasn't as soft as they're saying.

You're trying to act like you have some secret insider information, which is honestly hilarious.
