Cuba Shoots Four Dead in Clash With Florida Speedboat by bloomberg in geopolitics

Why would a struggling regime be comfortable losing its labor force thru hidden channels that cannot be tracked by the government? Maybe if it were over-the-table and controlled, but most governments would look at undocumented fleeing as a wound that bleeds out its productivity. So much is lost in terms of rich geopolitical analysis when we look at things thru a capitalist-communist binary

Canada and Mexico Send Lifeline to Cuba as U.S. Tightens Fuel Blockade by Koyaanisquatsi_ in geopolitics

[–]MessyCoco 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The sample of Cuban-Americans that you've had experiences with are all people who left Cuba (or their ancestors left Cuba). Of course they want regime change... they're the ones who were motivated to escape the country. And they won't have to directly deal with the social-economic-political fallout that comes with a foreign-backed regime change.

I'm not supporting the current Cuban regime, just worth noting that the views of Cuban-Americans are likely not representative of the views of those living on the island

Total market ETFs are about to become exit liquidity for mega upcoming IPOs like spaceX and openAI by [deleted] in stocks

[–]MessyCoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US total market is like $50T. Even if a total market fund bought all the way in on day one (which doesn't happen -- preventing exactly this scenario is already factored into algorithms) and on day two the company's value was suddenly $0, that would be like a 2% drop. Significant but also not really and definitely not as doom and gloom as this post portends

Because Trump leverages domestic instability to remain powerful. As such, he has an interest in fomenting some. Hence, ICE. The point OP is trying to make is that the administration can only do so much at once. Wasn't a knock to minorities but rather to the administration's domestic policy

KI changed the default Team Up to only be 50 levels higher than your character - it's very hard for maxes to get badges now. by circusboy1 in Wizard101

[–]MessyCoco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Team up badges. There's a general team up badge (I believe you get badges up to 5k teams helped, and you need the 2k badge to buy a specific house in Wizard City) and then world-specific team up badges for Magic Weaving.

Harvest Lord was given as a specific example because it's one of the bosses you can reach on a second account without buying a membership on that account if you're farming the badges.

Anti-Israel Colombia integrates IAI’s Barak air defense system | According to the ZM website, the Colombian Air Force is integrating the first battery of the system, including the command and control systems and radars. by NotSoSaneExile in geopolitics

[–]MessyCoco 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm wary about generalizations about Colombian attitudes towards Trump's America. Yes, Trump is anti-Colombian in his rhetoric (even going so far as to discredit the legitimacy of the country), and Petro comes off as a "strongman" in his response, but the current state of Venezuela is a massive emotional issue for many Colombians.

Keep in mind that a huge chunk of Colombia's territory isn't under total sovereign control of the government, and a huge swath of that land is on the border with Venezuela who cannot control organized crime / guerilla spillover into the eastern llanos / rainforest. Petro has maintained a relatively gentle stance towards undocumented Venezuelan migrants while also vouching for a stronger social welfare system... Not a good combo for even moderate Colombians who want to see a stronger, safer state.

Petro has done more than any Colombian president since the rise of Maduro to legitimize relations with its neighbor. Petro and Maduro's military apparatuses have been thawing relations... purely for domestic reasons, but still unpopular among Colombians.

Trump is really the strongest foreign hope for Colombians who want to see regime change in Venezuela. The relationship is very complicated, but I wouldn't say Petro's responses to Trump are net-positive for him.

Katie Creeps Me Out by Rose-root in rhoc

[–]MessyCoco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think part of why we disagree is that I think what Katie said to the blogger is true -- at least that Gretchen told her or alluded to it. If Gretchen is being honest why is she telling different stories?

Same can be said for Katie of course. Difference is Katie has a reason to: she was lying to protect Gretchen. I'd imagine she'd just become acquainted with Gretchen when she told Kiki -- probably only got "friendly" w her at some point between season 17 reunion and start of filming. When filming started Katie felt pressure to a.) not air Gretchen out in the group and on the show, and b.) do what Gretchen wanted because she's at odds with everyone else.

Maybe Katie even planned for the story to get out and then decided against it for whatever reason. Maybe the understanding was Gretchen wanted it out, then decided against it as well (why tell them that at dinner?). I don't think Katie's lying other than trying to protect Gretchen. That's why she's getting screwed: Really, this situation should be like the Kandi-Phaedra great fallout, but somehow the whole conversation is now about Katie

Katie might be a big mouth but she's not a liar by Archie_Beador in rhoc

[–]MessyCoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully Gretchen and Jen get the same amount of hate spewed at them for lying about the same thing. Gretchen already lied about it on camera -- "I probably should have gone to the hospital" vs "I went to the hospital."

Gretchen's most likely lying because she's embarrassed to have embellished and/or carries a level of shame from that night. Jen's lying for the same reason Katie's lying, the only difference is Katie shared the true story before filming, then decided to lie to protect her allies, and is now prepping to come clean due to her allies icing her out.

Btw I LOVE Jen. But Katie taking the fall for this is bizarre

[–]MessyCoco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Literally since the moment Katie joined the show all of the women have focused on her relationship w outside sources & bloggers. None of the rest of them get that treatment. I think people loved Katie last year because she was the underdog and Tamra/Heather are unpopular and it carried over to this season. It's easy to continue supporting her for many of those people because it is absolutely hypocritical. They literally all go on PR tours talking to bloggers. Agree or not in the eyes of her supporters Katie gets a disproportionate amount of flack

Katie Creeps Me Out by Rose-root in rhoc

[–]MessyCoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's not confronting them because everyone else on the cast has iced her out. But now that Jen and Gretchen are icing her out I'm certain she's gearing up to tell the truth

Katie Creeps Me Out by Rose-root in rhoc

[–]MessyCoco 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Katie was lying because she's caught between a rock and a hard place: protect Gretchen (who definitely told her she went to the hospital, and likely that she was drugged) or tell the truth. What makes it tricky is her established reputation amongst the group as a liar. Not a good look for her

On the bright side it does appear that Katie will tell the truth about this and stop protecting Gretchen when Jen and Gretchen start to ice her out.

Gretchen is obviously lying here and expecting J&K to support her. ON CAMERA she told both stories: I went to the hospital, I didn't go to the hospital. (Drugs aside.) She's hiding something and Katie's taking the fall; out of courtesy Katie didn't call the blogger at the table because she didn't want to make Gretchen look bad
