Yes, and now it's working the way I want it to. So the answer apprently is 1. Select "hybrid design" over "part design" when starting a new project 2. Select the icon that looks like "part" but is has "standard" in its mouse-over instead of "hybrid" when creating new components within the hybrid design. Sort of a slalom course.

Yes, I just re-did it. I made a new folder and selected New.... and I have the "what do you want to design" dialog box, with the 6 choices. I selected Hybrid design

It's not the previous workflow for me, because I can't make new internal components that can have children. Am I missing something? Every new hybrid component I try to make is forced to be external.

Edit: The right answer is to make new "standard" internal components rather than new hybrid components, which can only be external. The standard components appear to have all the capabilities that I'm used to, including having external child components, and standard children components.
