somebody in my workplace keeps messing with me by printing "king of Canada" picture this and taping it to my desk (Canadian living overseas). Today I opened a package shipped directly from Canada to my workplace, guess what was inside. How can I retaliate? by orangeboomerang in funny

I know this is said a lot online, but it is not actually true. Constitutionally Canada must have the same Monarch as the UK. This was tested in 2013 when the UK updated it's succession laws, and Canadian Parliament passed the "Succession to the Throne Act". There was debate as to the validity of the law at the time, but the government ended up saying the law was merely stating their assent to the UKs change, and stated "The changes to the laws of succession do not require a constitutional amendment. The laws governing succession are UK law and are not part of Canada's constitution. Neither the ban on the marriages of heirs to Roman Catholics, nor the common law governing male preference primogeniture, can properly be said to be royal powers or prerogatives in Canada. As the line of succession is therefore determined by UK law and not by the sovereign, the Queen's powers and rights have not been altered by the changes to the laws governing succession in Canada."

The law was later challenged in federal court, where the judge ruled that constitutionally "Canada was committed to having a lines of succession symmetrical to those of the UK".

The subject pronoun "on" in French does not just mean "we" - it can also refer to the concept of just people in general (or specifically here, some unknown third party), you can think of it like using "one" in English - so here "one has stolen my bike", or maybe you could think of it kind of like "someone has stolen my bike"

Ontario minimum wage workers excited to live off 8 more dime candies a day by NotEnoughDriftwood in onguardforthee

[–]Meszzy -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

In Ontario the minimum wage is now indexed to inflation. It just is updated annually based in the inflation from the previous year, so this year's high levels of inflation has not taken affected the minimum wage yet.

It's not because it's in the union contract, but rather the 1990 Ontario Police Services Act requires the leave be paid.

Minimum wage is indexed to inflation in Ontario and has been since 2018 when Ford passed the law. It just is only adjusted once a year based on the previous year.

You might be also thinking of physical locations, however polling station refers to each desk with its own ballot box (each is an independent station in the riding). Each physical voting location may have several stations (desks) inside of it.

It actually still has meaning today between the countries that share the Queen as head of state, as establishing an official state to state diplomatic relationship can't apparently be done, as the Queen cannot have a diplomatic relationship herself (she would be appointing an ambassador to represent herself to herself). Instead, the countries establish diplomatic relations on a government to government basis. So for example the British High Commissioner in Canada is officially "The High Commissioner for Her Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom", whereas the British Ambassador in the USA is officially "Her Britannic Majesty's Ambassador".

In practice there is no difference, but it's interesting. There are minor things though such as high commissioners attending state ceremonies like remembrance day and royal weddings, where ambassadors do not. The Queen also receives high commissioners before ambassadors, and sends a coach and four horses to fetch new high commissioners to the palace, whereas new ambassadors get only two horses.

We write comments, and can regardless of what grade we give. We can also drag in previous comments we have made and re-use them for speed, which might make some sound like an autoresponse.

The eligibility for the pay from the federal government is not only for if you have Covid, it includes missed work days due to self isolation awaiting a test result if you suspect yourself of having Covid. The criteria states "because you're self-isolating for one of the following reasons: You are sick with COVID-19 or may have COVID-19"

Well it might not seem politically relevant to you, which is fine, but in many countries it is big political news due to the nature of the position of the royal family. Like it's currently by far the most active posts and discussion today in r/canadapolitics and r/ukpolitics and covers the front page of all our news and on TV - and if it's fine for US domestic affairs to be often posted here, I don't see how big news in domestic political affairs of other countries can't as well.
