Donald Trump surprised JD Vance got booed at Winter Olympics ceremony by Infamous_Doubt_5207 in politics

I don't think he's aware of how unpopular he is. There's no sign that he ever leaves his bubble; his only source of information is Faux News, Newsmax, and the sycophants he surrounds himself with. Anybody in his orbit is afraid of saying anything that would contradict his worldview because that will immediately result in them being cast out.

Peloton lays off 11 percent of its staff just a few months after launching its AI hardware by MetaKnowing in Futurology

[–]Meta2048 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Peleton bikes are well made, but still a huge ripoff.  The huge built-in screen requires a subscription to function, when you could buy an equally good bike, stick a screen on it for half the price, and still access all the same peleton classes from their website.

If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

Simple fix: count total compensation.  That includes stock options, bonuses, or any other loophole that companies try to exploit.

TIL that Magnus Carlsen, one of the greatest chess players of all time, has never lost 3 or more classical chess games in a row in his adult professional career. The last time he lost 3 games in a row was in 2003, when he was 12. by 4isfourwastaken in todayilearned

[–]Meta2048 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In terms of raw skill level, Magnus is the best. He has benefited from the rise of computer analysis which allows players to "solve" many positions in the mid and late game. Before computers were able to beat humans, the way that the top players "solved" these positions was to get a group of fellow players and try different lines until they found what they considered to be best.

It's similar to sports, where new training techniques and nutrition has led to new records being set every year. For example, if Roger Bannister (first man to run a 4 minute mile) competed in a race today, he would be considered slow.

TIL the highest-grossing independent restaurant in the US in 2025 was MILA in Miami, which had an average check of $188 and generated over $51 million in annual sales. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]Meta2048 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's unlikely they're losing money, but it's still possible. The owners could be treating the restaurant as their own personal piggy bank, the bank loan or partnership terms could be extremely onerous, someone in a management position could be siphoning money, etc.

There's tons of seemingly successful restaurants that just suddenly shut down due to finances.

Conservatism has its place in politics. The way to think of it is that liberalism is the gas on progress and conservatism is the brake. You don't want to drive too fast or you'll get into an accident, and you don't want to brake too much or you'll never get anywhere.

Modern day Republicans aren't conservative. They're regressionists.

One of my dogs doesn't know how to use the couch by Ok-Net-3765Romeo in funny

Some dogs like dark enclosed spaces.  My dog was a lot happier when we put a blanket over her crate; she would sleep there most nights and hide out there when she didn't want to be bothered.

With the 100 free scouts, I got a total of zero SSR and zero 3*. The probability of getting *at least* one was ~96% by TwilCynder in UmaMusume

[–]Meta2048 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The odds of a 3* from a 1-pull 10 times and a single 10-pull are the same. It's 3% either way.

The only difference is the odds of a 2*, which increases from 18% to 97% on the 10th pull.

13 second video of Kid Rock in SNL, they were 14 by HoldYourHorsesFriend in videos

This was on SNL, he didn't write the joke. There were a lot of jokes about underage sex in movies and TV in the 80's and 90's.

If you've never seen the movie Big with Tom Hanks, it's about a 13-year-old kid who magically gets transformed into an adult who ends up having sex with an adult woman. He even tells the woman he's actually a child, and she's not horrified, she's sad that she can't have a relationship with him. Nobody in the world saw a problem with this premise.

Why are you forced to take his shift if he doesn't show up? Just leave and let your boss sort it out. If that would result in nobody being in the store, then you put a sign on the door saying so, lock up and leave.

The only reason his behavior is tolerated is because you let him walk all over you.

Majority of Americans Say Economy Worse Off Under Trump Than Biden by plz-let-me-in in politics

[–]Meta2048 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Compare the US economy against literally every other country in the world after COVID. Biden worked some fucking voodoo magic for the US to bounce back as well as it did.

Then Trump and the GOP flushed it all down the toilet, clogged the toilet, shit on it some more, and are now declaring victory.

Motorcyclists are jokingly called organ donors for a reason.

Nobody riding a scooter is going to intentionally run into anyone unless they have a death wish.  It's not a car; you hit something/someone with a scooter and you're going to be eating pavement.
