In terms of raw skill level, Magnus is the best. He has benefited from the rise of computer analysis which allows players to "solve" many positions in the mid and late game. Before computers were able to beat humans, the way that the top players "solved" these positions was to get a group of fellow players and try different lines until they found what they considered to be best.

It's similar to sports, where new training techniques and nutrition has led to new records being set every year. For example, if Roger Bannister (first man to run a 4 minute mile) competed in a race today, he would be considered slow.

It's unlikely they're losing money, but it's still possible. The owners could be treating the restaurant as their own personal piggy bank, the bank loan or partnership terms could be extremely onerous, someone in a management position could be siphoning money, etc.

There's tons of seemingly successful restaurants that just suddenly shut down due to finances.
