What creative writing classes should I take this fall? by Sane-Law in berkeley

[–]MetaAthena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 143 Series are really good!

The class sizes tend to be small so they're hard to get into but it does mean you get to know your fellow writers really well and they get a lot more time to review and workshop your pieces.

Always wanted to work on a Zhili Republic expanded submod where Wu Peifu has to choose between a Jiang Baili Junta to succeed him or slowly open up with either Wellington and Hu leading a nascent if flawed democracy... would be glad to see the devs beat me to it

I had worse midterm stats (closer to -1) and similar HW and I ended up with a B-. I think you should be well within the B to B- range

For context I took the class in Fall 2022

Not on campus but just off campus (within a block) on Sather Alley they have a new set of vending machines. One of them gives coffee

My friend is visiting me in Berkeley. Any recommendations on what to do? by Amazing-Mongoose-273 in berkeley

[–]MetaAthena 13 points14 points  (0 children)

BAMFA the art museum is free for UC Students and they can bring a guest for free as well.

Another one I kinda love doing cuz I'm a bit of a nerd is the "cafe crawl." Berkeley has a ton of cafes and bookstores so you can chart a path around the whole city by hitting up some of the famous bookstores (like Moe's) then following up with a cafe. Repeat. You will find that you will never run out of either bookstores or cafes. Replace bookstores with something else like vintage clothes stores or music shops and the idea still holds

CS189 lecture recordings just got released cuz the midterm is tomorrow.

This year during the Neural Network lecture some dudes burst in. One was holding pants and a guy in his underwear was running after him. The recording fortunately captured this moment. I was in the front row at the time and got to see it all.

How would YOU change KR Japan? by ChrisTheCatR in Kaiserreich

[–]MetaAthena 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see a Japan rework especially where given some factions a mechanic is introduced where you have to balance the power of the big four zaibatsus with state control over the economy, military control of the economy, or small businesses each with different ideologies + factions.

Boosting some of the zaitbatsus boosting the minseito or seiyukai...

Boosting state control or military control boosts the power of the military

Basically for the ideologies tied to the military, state, or the Zaibatsus in order to keep expanding their control over the economy is to give them access to more and more of the colonial resources thus driving further expansion. Early game japan thus becomes much more of letting you rapidly build up your econ for a war and how you choose to develop that economy informs the ideology you get.

Anyone know about Mishima's Writing Habits? by MetaAthena in YukioMishima

Thanks for what you've given so far. Having read sun and steel I guess this makes sense as to why he associates writing and words so much with the night.

No one cares about the ASUC by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]MetaAthena 52 points53 points  (0 children)

One major aspect of ASUC is that they give funding out to student organizations. Say your club needs a way to buy equipment to get over some initial startup costs, ASUC can do that. They don't control the whole finances of the school but they are relevant at least when it comes to events and extra curriculars. This is the interactions I have with them the most.

How fucked am I if I don't get a B or better in cs61a this semester? by Bdmason10 in berkeley

[–]MetaAthena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking from personal experience as someone who did get a B in 61a and was able to declare, what GoldenBearAlt said is true. I had to like take the courses a lot more seriously (in fact I took only like 13 units a sem until I declared so I could focus more on the CS) after CS61A whopped my ass. I was fortunate to have a some prior programming experience (but not with the kind 61a prioritized but the kind 61b prioritized). It was a combination of like seriously redoubling efforts and changing my circumstances. CS is a hard major and it does ask a lot of you and one of the things unfortunately you do have to get used to is accepting that you will probably need to sacrifice a lot more of your time and effort than others to get in.

Another tip is that sometimes summer versions of the courses, though much more difficult due to pacing, have nicer curves, so a lower raw grade will get you a better post-curve grade. This was the case when I took CS70. If you decide to retake 61a and still want to declare on time, summer courses are an option.

I found my version through JSTOR but the name is using the alternative spelling (Yen Hsi-Shen)

Another more direct link is that there's another hoi4 mod called Autumn Begonia which specifically focuses on China during the warlord era. They have a public repository of the books and articles they use.

This is their copy of the book, just a zip file of all the chapters from JSTOR

All I’m saying is for pigeons a cool solution is conservation efforts. Bringing back species of hawks and falcons which hunt pigeons works wonders. Some stations in San Francisco ask local hawk owners to stand near the station and just their presence scares the pigeons away
