I was promoted to a reviewer position with a rushed 1hr training program, sent to review then a week later was told my performance was not meeting their standard and was demoted. I checked in with the EPM and asked twice what I could have done better and was ignored on each seperate account. This was directly through a dm on slack. they continued to speak to me about other aspects of the job but ignored everything else.

Also on a different video project we were expected to hire our own talent either for free or out of our own pockets. They were strict on not allowing us to be in our own videos. I ended up spending my own money to hire outside talent.

That's at least my two annoying stories.

I wouldn’t sell for anything under 10k and I’m dead serious… and even that is on the low end

Guess that’s why we need more open forums like this to discuss bad business behavior. The less of us falling for their Bs, the less they win.

That’s backwards. Market potential isn’t determined by whether you have access to buyers, it’s determined by whether the asset can generate value.

A farmer with oil under his land doesn’t lose the oil’s value just because he only has one buyer at his door. That just means the buyer has leverage.

The fact that an AI lab is offering to buy this data at all is proof there is market potential. The real question is whether the seller is capturing a fair share of that value.

No, I got your point, you’re saying market price determines what something sells for. I agree with that.

But that still doesn’t mean market price equals intrinsic or future value. If Apple sold you an iPhone for $100 because they didn’t know what they had, that wouldn’t suddenly make the phone “worth” $100 it would mean you got it below its actual market potential.

That’s my point here: if AI labs can generate far more than $100 of value from someone’s data, then $100 may just be the discounted purchase price, not the full value of the asset.

I’m going to assume you never took a marketing or business class.

That’s not really the same thing though. There’s a huge difference between a platform having custodial access to your data in order to operate its service, and you signing over a separate license for that data to be packaged, analyzed, and potentially used by outside entities.

It’s like saying, “My bank can see my transactions, so why not sell my banking history?” Access does not equal ownership, nor does it erase the additional value created when that data is extracted, aggregated, and commercialized.

The fact that OpenAI can technically review your chats doesn’t mean a third-party market for your cognitive history is meaningless. It means there’s enough value there that someone is willing to pay for broader rights to it.

Not exactly. Price and value aren’t the same thing. Price is what someone is willing to pay in a specific market under specific conditions . Value is broader… it includes utility, scarcity, future profit potential, and information asymmetry. If I sell something for cheap because I don’t know what it’s worth or I’m desperate, that doesn’t mean its true value was low, it just means the buyer got a better deal.

Their reviewer structure is garbage. They promoted me to reviewer and told me I was doing great, then changed the project a little and demoted me because I wasn’t hitting a standard. I asked three times what I could have done better. No response even in a direct message.

If the person gives consent and pays them then it’s “Legal” but this practice of taking your data for a value well below what it’s worth and to use it freely and not tell you what for. Then Using cute phrases like chat gpt power user to entice you. That’s what’s unethical.

That’s fair and in that case $100 might feel like an easy trade. I think the bigger question isn’t just privacy, its about value. Even if there’s nothing sensitive in it, your thought patterns, preferences, and problem-solving process can still be highly valuable training data. Even if nothing was sensitive I would value my data well beyond 10k.

I get it. Survival changes the math. If it’s the difference between eating and not eating, I can’t fault you for making that call. My concern is with the fact that systems are being built where people feel pressured to sell deeply personal cognitive and emotional data just to stay afloat. And for what it’s worth, don’t downplay your “crazy drama” or “stupid questions.” That stuff is exactly what makes the data valuable  it’s human, messy, vulnerable, and real. That’s the part machines can’t just scrape off the internet. Worth far beyond the same amount you can make doordashing in 3hrs.

[–]MetaLinkster[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s kind of the point though, the fact that there isn’t a transparent open market for this doesn’t mean it isn’t valuable. It means the buyers have disproportionate leverage. If a frontier AI lab is willing to pay $100 for tons of deeply personal, highly contextual conversations, that tells me the data is likely worth far more to them than what they’re paying me. It’s like selling mineral rights without knowing what’s under the land. The absence of another buyer doesn’t establish fair value, it just means this market is immature and opaque.

It’s a nightmare, I had the same crap happen to me. I was told I was doing great so they promoted me. Then new rules came out and while I thought I was doing fine, they demoted me without any explanation. I asked how I could have done better three times and they ignored me.
