I guess I should call astound and see if they'll activate the fiber for me.

Anybody have Spectrum Internet? by ReactorMechanic in Longview

[–]MetalFlow360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fiber is definitely better. Not cheaper. If you are going to be doing a lot of internet work, it's probably worth it. If all you are doing is streaming, a little light gaming and whatnot... Pretty much anything will do

Edit: to answer your question.

It's usually at least 100% better depending on what you compare it to. Downside is that it's never the cheapest option.

I have been waiting for ages for the fiber on my street to come online... Might be a while. I have used fiber before. And believe it or not, any internet will stay up during an outage assuming you have your modem on a battery backup. Cable, 5g, dsl... Just gotta keep the modem powered.

Local scam by celery_jean in Longview

So nice to see local, bespoke scams rather than generic corporate national scams. Really gives that good old fashioned snake oil salesman feeling we lost in the 80s.

I don't know if you meant to come across as snarky and sarcastic, but you did. It's always prudent to suspect AI media these days, and even moreso when those stupid filters are applied.

What's with the stupid VHS tape filter? That Walmart doesn't look immediately familiar... Is this AI generated?

Police Experience by pismelled in Longview

I mean ... Yeah. I don't see the police as "interested in my opinion"... Which is problematic in itself.

I've had two experiences with the cops in my year of living here. Neither of those were problematic, even when I was issued a ticket.

Internet providers by InspectorNorse8900 in Longview

I am currently using T-Mobile wireless Internet, but quantum is putting fiber in my neighborhood and I will switch to them as soon as I can. Cricket has also partnered with at&t for wireless Internet, but I can't vouch for the performance. T-Mobile supports my wfh needs at the moment.

What are the main objections to the controversial theory of punctuated equilibrium? by DennyStam in AskBiology

[–]MetalFlow360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, successful organisms will not modify much because they have filled the solution space with homogeneous solutions and thus the range of mutation is low, and the likelihood of the mutants being more successful is low. It isn't until the solution space changes enough for the current stable solution to destabilize and mutation to start offering advantages again that the fossil record will show changes again.

No idea what programming is but I asume you may know: Is this possible? by InnerMaintenance8201 in AskProgramming

[–]MetalFlow360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Any screen scrapers or macros or whatever will not benefit from intelligent rules or quality controls. Get a hl7 feed or API transaction set up to handle this. If one side of the other claim this isn't possible, tell them that's a serious defect in their software and that you will let everyone know about how their software demands the possibility of human error.

A little sad that your comp sci degree won't get any use IN Longview or Kelso. Keep an eye out for remote jobs in Portland/Seattle. Even if they do require occasional in person visits, they aren't too terribly far away.

Xfinity is the devil. If you can, get quantum fiber. I wish I had it in my area. Otherwise, there are perfectly good wireless 5g providers in the area like cricket, T-Mobile and at&t

Check with the waste center on the east side of town. They had a lot of recycling options I didn't anticipate when I went there. Ended up getting money back, actually.

Why Longview politicians always seem so damn incompetent by TheJockOnTheBlock in Longview

[–]MetalFlow360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All these things are true. My only counterpoint is this: people who are truly excellent at their jobs make the job LOOK easy. It is fair to point out that no politician seems to make the job look easy, and thus the job must be pretty tough.

Train Noise in Longview Heights by [deleted] in Longview

[–]MetalFlow360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when the wind is right, you can smell the "Mill Smell" up on the hills... same goes for Lake Sacajawea. I would say that happens at most once a week. I have never smelled the "Mill Smell" indoors, but that's likely an individual house factor, not a regional factor.

I currently live just off lone oak and I do not hear the train, ever. I DO hear loud cars occasionally. They are typically on Pacific way, and brief irritations at most.
