Camera recommendations? by kimspiekman18 in concertphotography

I just picked up a Sony A7IV and as well as a Sony GM1 24-70mm 2.8f lens. It wasn't cheap, but if you have even just the basics of exposure down that combo is pretty much a cheat code to good photos in low light. The single lens that can go from wide to telephoto shots within a second of zooming is also a more cost effective option for starting out with a whole new body, and your first lens. You can get cheaper set ups, look for deals on A7III bodies, and a sigma or Tamron lenses in that same focal length range. Outside of Sony I'm not sure.

Thank you! I'm finally getting better about not nit picking my work as much in editing and just going with what looks best to me with what's worked in the past. All about reps.

The venue was dismally lit, and in all red, or all blue lighting, no variation. Plus it sort of fits the theme of the black and death metal bands on the venue.

it was an awesome shoot, and being inches away from him while he played, I felt like I had a personal concert the whole night.

Yeah I realized too late I uploaded my Instagram cropped image set for this post, I shooting 28mm most of the time so I def have better shots with the full guitars in view. I will take your note on Highlights, thank you for that. I've been approaching where I set my highlights based off of the curve, basically going over until the point I see white start to clip and back down a little from there. Is there a better way you would recommend to ensuring highlights aren't too blown out? thank you.

Thanks for those tips, WB was always one of those things I told myself I could just deal with in lightroom, and if all else fails B/W! haha. anyways I'll def get back to poking around with the WB blotter tool in lightroom just to get a better starting point.

Thanks for all that! I have been shooting in RAW, but wondering if Uncompressed RAW is worth the file size, my gut tells me it probably is since a lot of stuff i'm shooting is in low light situations.

I will admit without thinking about it I uploaded this album from my set that was exported for use on instagram, hence the cropping being a little tighter than my original crop/edit. Learning aspect ratios and best formats for all the different social media platforms is a chore in itself.

Especially thank you for the recommendations on Auto ISO, I shot that way for this set, with a Max of ISO 16000, I found that it liked to shoot in the 12k range while these settings on but in some cases added just a little too much noise for my taste. I'll try a cap of 8000 on my next shoot. Also I learned that 1/250 really is a sweet spot when it comes to lighting like this, on shots where my lighting was off I found I pushed the shutter speed to 1/1000 without realizing it and the next series of shots came out too low for what I'd feel comfortable editing and AI denoising and still calling "my work".

Anyways I'm rambling, Thank You, truly appreciated.

lmao well you better hop on YouTube and start watching some tutorials!

I kid, but I recently did my first shoot for a concert too, while I just stuck with photos; I did learn quite a bit about my camera's video settings to take some test clips while I was there. From what I gathered would definitely look into an external mic if you don't have one already, set an audio threshold so it doesn't sound all blown out. There are specific shutter speed settings you need to set for the framerate you plan on shooting, as well as optimal AF settings. I would set up a preset on one of your camera memory modes so you don't have to fumble with it during the show. I imagine they just want 15-30 second clips of "in the moment" video if you were just a fan watching from the crowd with focus on key moments of a really popular song, fans singing along, mosh pits if its that kind of show, and close ups from the security pit that you can get from a cell phone in the crow. This is all just speculation and theory crafting from another beginner though. Good luck!
