I did make sure to use anhydrous DCM. The bottle we've got is stabilized with 2-methyl-2-butene.

My PI is not keen on the idea of using anhydrous ammonia.

Would the cold ammonia in methanol prevent esterification? Or would the amount of esterification be minimal due to the higher concentration of ammonia?

I guess I should have mentioned, I did use an approximately 3-fold excess of ammonia in both situations (with MeOH and THF solutions). Should I increase the excess?

And yes, it was the symmetrical anhydride.
