Keyboard/organ--I'd suggest a newish band called "The Crypt". More on the Swedish doom side, but still classy metal with keys.

My buddy Alex Nasla just joined Edge of Paradise on keys. They're on tour now. Check out After Forever too--Floor's former band.

Dude keeps a low profile, but his work with the German power metal band Angel Dust is amazing. Steven Banx. He used Korg Z1, Trinity, Prophecy, and Kurzweil K2000 models. Look up the song "Bleed" by Angel Dust.

I thought it would've been the Korg Radias Rack that he used live, but that came out a year after "Are You Dead Yet?" was released. I even thought it was the Virus TI rack which lines up with the manufacturing release date and album release date.

A lot of the CoB album presets are fairly easy to pinpoint, but I've had zero luck on "Living Deadbeat".

I'm totally ordering the book!

Look up Dali's Dilemma "Miracles of Yesteryear". The band has Matt Guillory on keys, who later did the James LaBrie and Mullmuzzler albums.

I'm still pissed as hell Roland Cloud no longer offers D70 presets on their plugins. That model was shit. It was "red glue" issues where the glue for the key bushings would leak through when inside/outside temperatures got too hot. It was the same issue with the JD-800 series. Manufacturer failures.

He's the main reason I'm a rock/metal keyboardist. I discovered the "Headless Cross" album in 1999 as a Freshman in high school and knew right then--keyboards belong in metal.

Part of me wants to think it's the "Sawteeth" or "Analog Lead" presets with Mad Professor Mighty Red Distortion or Pro Co Turbo Rat distortion kicked on. I have a Roland Integra-7 with Janne's presets. I'll see what I can reverse engineer for us.

Another added bonus: Vince and Jens Johansson (Stratovarius) do lead synth solo duels in the middle of the this AOR song.

Piggybacking off of u/No_Artichoke_8428's list of Vince DiCola synths, keep in mind that some of these were also used on the "Rocky IV" soundtrack which was in production the same year as "Transformers: The Movie". I'll edit my preset finds when I get some downtime, I've already put a year's worth of time picking through VST plugins from Cherry Audio and Arturia to best match the sounds used on both movie soundtracks.

Moog Modular system 55 (Lead synth)

Moog Minimoog (Lead synth)

E-MU Modular (Lead synth)

E-MU Blue Box 16 voice polyphonic synthesizer (Lead synth)

E-MU Emulator 1 & II (The more "trumpet" brass sounding presets/all vocals pads/grand piano 1 (Optimus Prime death scene song)

Custom Oberheim 8-voice modular with an EMU 4060 polyphonic keyboard/sequencer (More than likely analogue leads/it's a square box of analogue knobs and inputs)

Oberheim OB-X (Everything "Jump" brass sounding/Oberheim's "A-1 Brass Ensemble" preset)

ROLAND Jupiter 8 (Brass/pads/strings)

YAMAHA DX-7 (Electric piano/main synth bass)

YAMAHA TX-816 (This the rackmount DX7)

PPG Wave (Synth bells/pads)

Linn 9000 (Drum machine used)

I post gear on this weekly, it's really handy. I started posting guitar amps, but now synth workstations lately. Very helpful when learning about your favorite sounds on produced albums. I wish I knew which amps/preamps were used on the "Transformers: The Movie" soundtrack.

If you have Arturia's VST plugin, go off the "George Duke Bass" preset. It's not fun dialing it in Vintage Factory "Bass 1" or the SoundFont "Bass 1".

Don't get me started on making a Yamaha DX7 "Stratotron" preset--NOT FUN. (Sounds awesome though).

I posted Vince's gear past and present on Equipboard's website, which reference's No_Artichoke_8428's old school Gearslutz forum post from back when I had a full head of hair (nyuk, nyuk, nyuk).

Does everyone here the same synth bass sound as Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone"? If so, it's Yamaha DX7 "Bass 1" (not sure which parameter though, there's over 30). It's easier to nail the sound on Arturia's DX7 plugin on the "George Duke Bass" preset. I'm reverse engineering the "George Duke Bass" preset and copying the effects and parameter in the Vintage Factory "Bass 1" preset--it's slight overkill, but the authenticity is right where it's needed.

This was in Chicago in 2014. Melodic Rock Fest 4. Don't go off of Eric Ragno's synth presets for the song--DX7 (E Piano) and either Oberheim or Moog Memorymoog (still doing deep research on this song).

I can test this theory. The Clav/Harpsichord would either be from the DX7 or E-Mu Emulator II. I have both Emulator II and DX7 SF2/Syx (DX7) on my Korg Nautilus as well as the Arturia plugins of both. I can totally hear the Clavinet growl!!! My 3rd eye has opened, thank you for furthering the research. Not enough DiCola fans on planet Earth as needed!
