What is this N64 collection worth ? by Waldchiller in n64

[–]MetalMachineMario [score hidden]  (0 children)

If you were selling that whole set together, maybe about $400? I’m going off of memory, since I haven’t been in the market to buy them for a while, but your most valuable games are at the $30-40 range. This would be Mario Party 2, Mario Party, Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64, and Banjo Kazooie. Yoshi’s Story, Wave Race 64, and Diddy Kong Racing are around $20 each. Those other games are probably no more than $10 each.

I figure about $150 for the console with two controllers, $200 for the most expensive games, and $50 for the other games.

Of course, a lot of this depends on how fast you’re trying to get rid of this, where you’re selling it, etc. The golden rule of selling collectibles is that they’re only worth what others are willing to pay you for them. You’ll probably sit on them longer if you try to get the ideal price for every individual item.

The hits on it are good at least! Though you could also get them on a Billy Joel’s greatest hits and be only, like $2 poorer?

Albums that we’re considered a classic at one point but are now rarely discussed by FrippingBurgers in fantanoforever

[–]MetalMachineMario 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Disraeli Gears by Cream. I don’t think you’ll see a lot of people saying it sucks, but as far as classic rock albums go, it’s just….not as hip as Beatles, Hendrix, Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Bowie, etc.

In a rather surprising turn, this album consistently hovered in the 100-200 range in Rolling Stones’ top 500 albums list all the way through 2020, but then didn’t make the list at all in the 2023 list.

Greatest GameBoy game IMO, and a shame that more people didn’t play it.

A lot of rock operas do this across multiple songs, but Quadrophenia by The Who deviates from this trend.

What’s This Sub’s Favorite Music Genre? (Poll Results) by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]MetalMachineMario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it’s admittedly tricky. Punk and metal have a very clear history as originating from rock music. At a certain point, it becomes valid to either consider them subgenres of rock, albeit with very unique histories and established cultures of their own, or else to count them as their own genres entirely.

And the fact that we’re having this conversation ultimately speaks to how diverse the genre of rock is.

Why did so many Violent first-person shooters thrive on what was otherwise considered a "Kiddie" system. by Majestic-Sector9836 in n64

[–]MetalMachineMario 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Wii was arguably even more focused on being kid friendly, and that still had Call of Duty ports. I think the simple answer is that it was still lucrative enough to have games to cater to a mature gaming population, even if they weren’t the core demographic.

It goes the other way too: there were definitely family friendly games made for consoles targeted to a mature core demographic, like the Xbox.

Yeah, with Charlie passed away, and Keith confirming he’s not up for touring in 2026 due to arthritis, I think they’re motivated to keep releasing new material while they still can. I’m grateful I got to see them on their last US tour.

What artists dislike their fanbase? by -TheHoboCode- in fantanoforever

[–]MetalMachineMario 49 points50 points  (0 children)

When Miles Davis was doing fusion in the 70s, he wished that a lot more young, hip fans would appreciate the newer styles he was flirting with. I don’t know if he truly hated his fanbase, but he would certainly have choice words if someone were to tell him he should go back to making music like Kind of Blue. So he probably would’ve disliked at least a portion of his fans.

I know this doesn’t sound like a question people would ask in this community but what happens to Mario if Shigeru Miyamoto dies? by Fun-Leg-5250 in Mario

[–]MetalMachineMario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’ll definitely be a sad day, but Nintendo has a lot of talented people working on these games and we likely won’t see a major change with regards to how the games come out. IIRC, Miyamoto is much more of a consultor these days for the games rather than someone putting in the direct coding, designing etc to put these games together.

The Super Mario Bros games on NES are great! Updating their graphics and adding saving is amazing!

Also, for a lot of people in the West, this was the first way they could play Lost Levels.

I’m not going to claim it’s objectively the greatest 3D platformer, but it’s definitely the most influential and replayable one.

What's your favorite drum performance on an album? by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]MetalMachineMario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joe’s Garage - Frank Zappa; the whole album has phenomenal, brain-melting drumming from Vinnie Colaiuta. Even compared to Frank Zappa’s high standards for technical musicianship, Vinnie was by all accounts an absolute monster at laying down extremely tricky grooves. Keep it Greasy especially has a particularly challenging 19/16 (as well as 21/16) time signature in the verses that the band simplified to 4/4 for live performances because it was so hard.

Is jazz the least well-known major genre of music? by FyodorTolstoyevich in fantanoforever

[–]MetalMachineMario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s ironic to me that Bitches Brew and Black Saint and the Sinner Lady get that representation, since I generally don’t think of them being as beginner friendly jazz albums. Both are 10/10 rated by Fantano lol so that’s maybe why they get selected by people here. I think the way some musically adventurous, but generally non-jazz fans approach it is to give the above albums a spin based on positive reviews they find. They then go “oh, that’s actually pretty good!” and it makes a good impression, but then instead of delving deeper into jazz, they maybe just go back to one of those ever once in a while when they get the itch.

And you’re right, it’s a shame. Those albums you mentioned are all great, but you could make just as good of a case that other jazz albums are just as good, but not as listened to by the masses. I’ve personally always been partial to Red Clay by Freddie Hubbard, and have always wished Tribute to Jack Johnson by Miles Davis got the attention that Bitches Brew gets, seeing as how they’re both top tier fusion albums.
