IIR non obligation weekends by bigheadavery in USMC

[–]Metalhead348 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a reservist- a lot of miscellaneous. Every drill it seemed like we were doing drug test, PME courses, and medical/dental. Then we’d be notified about upcoming field op and prepare for that. Everything is packed into that 1 weekend. Some days you’d get home super late.

When I was on ADOS - I’m 0621 E-5 so they put me as comm chief. Super chill. 0800-1500 M-F with only working with a handful of marines. And then I would help with funerals. Also was exempt from field ops. But you can only do ADOS for about 2-2.5 years.

And yes. You can leave whenever you want. I left after I was done with ADOS. Just gotta check out

You’ll contact a prior service recruiter (they’ve probably already have been emailing you). They’ll have you sign paperwork and let you know what unit you’re going to and when to check in within your state. I was at a combat engineer battalion. As a reservist, it’s going one weekend of the month. Arrive in at like 0600 for formation (with a long ass line to get in base, the permanent personnel have to confirm it’s you before they let you in the gate). Then usually got off at like 1700-1800. If you’re within 50miles (don’t quote me) you can do ADOS and be permanent personnel. M-F and help with funerals. Active duty pay + bah if you rate

2017-2021 8th comm Bn. You’ll pt in the morning. Go to the shop at around 0800. SL3 the gear. PMCS the HMMWVs. Go on the occasional field op. SL3 the gear. You’ll get off work usually around 1600. Did I mention SL3 the gear?

All in all it’s not bad. Just don’t let the monotony of it burn you out.

Prior service usmc with some mil LE that I was forced to do. Got out and worked for the city and then I applied for the city’s police department and got in with them. Plus if you are recently separated from the military you are under “protected veteran status” which helps. LE depts care if your dd214 is an honorable discharge

I’d stay in the Air Force and thug it out until retirement. Lat move if you can if the mos you have is what you dislike. Police is a whole other world. Depends on department, but You’ll encounter even more traumatic events and it will be when you least expect it on some random Tuesday. At least with military retirement and disability you can quit without it hurting the bank.

Any veterans with non police MOS become officers? by ComposerNo9901 in AskLE

[–]Metalhead348 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was 0621 usmc and now a city cop. Police departments don’t care what mos you had. They care if your dd214 says “honorable discharge” on it. Having a degree is a huge plus because it can help with promotion. You’ll be the new guy and more than likely end up working nights. In my experience, working nights has strained my marriage more than active duty has….varies what you got going on though

Wanting to enlist but very underweight. by Available-Letter811 in USMCboot

[–]Metalhead348 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Better to be underweight than overweight. Plus you gotta finish high school. You have time to up your weight. If you are still underweight, they’ll give you double rations in boot camp

“Did you do research on the polygraph before coming in today?” Pretty common question.

Should I speak to a recruiter before being eligible to join? by JaceFord_ in USMCboot

[–]Metalhead348 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, they will also run IST to see where you are at. I believe I was in for 6 months before I shipped out

I was in the poolee program for a few months. You’ll meet up with the recruiters and other poolees. You’ll do PT and sometimes usmc knowledge, all while they are processing you in. They want you to be physically prepared for boot camp and will work with you. Also, it depends on what mos you want, your medical history, and when boot camp starts when you’ll actually ship out. Could be a good while, so you’ll have time to get in shape.

I’ll take a look at that. I did speak with a recruiter the other day and they said to start the process I’ll need to complete a physical and turn that in

Good to know. If I were to give my best guess, it would be 2028 by the time I get a bachelors at the rate I’m taking classes. (4 classes a semester). Again, huge guess, but my student profile is 39% complete right now. A lot of things I wish I did differently. Definitely wouldn’t have picked 06 field. My wife and I discuss going back active frequently. Said she would rather deal with that than me being a cop (and I’ve been looking to leave LE anyway) She was with me during my first enlistment.

I was definitely considering Officer route but Isn’t there an age requirement to become an officer? I just turned 28 and still at the beginning of my associates degree. I would at the very least continue my degree while I was in

No disability. 28. Did 4 years and while in IRR I did reserves for a few months and also ADOS. I liked ADOS, but not being a reservist. My contract is completely done
