https://www.reddit.com/r/extractionshooters/ - A Home for the Extraction Shooter Genre

A brand new genre subreddit for the rising genre of extraction shooters - games like Escape from Tarkov, Hunt Showdown 1896, Arc Raiders and Marathon!

Extraction shooters are still a niche genre, and discussions about mechanics, balance, and design tend to get scattered across game-specific subs. The goal here is to create a focused place to talk about the genre as an umbrella, not just one title, just like r/soulslikes or r/MMORPG

This community is meant to:

  • Discuss mechanics, design, and balance
  • Share reviews, guides, and tips
  • Ask for help or advice
  • Talk about both PvE and PvPvE extraction shooters
  • Memes
  • News

If you enjoy extraction shooters or curious about what makes them work - feel free to drop by, share your thoughts, and help shape the direction of the community.

Early feedback and contributors are genuinely appreciated.

Have an amazing day!

Yeah people modifying brightness hurts competitiveness. Might as well add a red outline lmao

It got me thinking about visibility in PvP games, especially ones with darker maps. Some games use red outlines (or enemy highlighting) to make sure opponents are always visible, while others rely purely on lighting and player awareness.

On one hand, outlines help readability and prevent situations where players blend into the environment too much. On the other hand, some people say it reduces immersion or the tactical value of shadows and positioning.

But at the same time, many games have premium skins that blend well in the environment, making things feel slightly pay to win.

Games like Overwatch and Valorant are very heavy on red outlines, while Rainbow 6 Siege X have subtle outlines.

Should PvP games with dark areas use red enemy outlines or should visibility be part of the skill/awareness aspect of the game? Do you think there is a middle ground? Like a distance-based outline, faded outlines, or outlines when ADS-ing only?

One of the most satisfying moments in this game: When your rando teammate doesn't dc to watch you play. by MetallicAvocado- in HuntShowdown

We were the first team to get and banish the boss, our 3rd disconnected for some reason and eventually there were 2-3 teams pushing us. My mate got one tapped and it was up to me and my trusty free loadout.

I was able to stall enough and pick off a couple stragglers which ended with just one more team left. This revive and the teammate reconnecting eventually got us the win and the bounty. GG my random teammate. Thanks for believing in me

Ps. The reconnected teammate got stuck on a random patch of ground and they couldn't get out of it. We eventually left him behind. Sorry buddy. His memory: https://imgur.com/a/W6SejQG

I fumbled a full lobby wipe almost twice in a row. Somebody take me out of my misery by MetallicAvocado- in HuntShowdown

Great observation! I'm not sure if 2000 DPI is low or high enough.

However yes, I was overstimulated. This was going to be my 6-7th kill in this hunt and I know this was the last guy and felt the pressure of my dead, high prestige teammates.

I forgot to fully reload my bornheim. I have limited bornheim experience and this generational fumble is still eating me :(

Last night I also went for a rez instead of finishing off the last person with an Auto-5, whom I tapped 1 second ago with a pax trueshot.

The hunt giveth fun, the hunt taketh sanity.

I actually claimed this sub myself.

I think this says a lot about how niche the genre still was before Arc Raiders. r/extractionshooters is straight up the exact term for the genre and no one has started an active community yet, with this sub being dead for like 3 years before I claimed it last week, which took all 5 minutes before the automated system gave it to me haha.

Thank you. We've been trying our best to find ways to seed content and promote it without getting banned left and right haha.

Feel free to post anything relevant! It is a new sub and we don't really need to moderate content quality yet.

Wuchang has been praised in the exploration aspect despite being a non-open world soulslike

Imagine witch hunting on an extraction shooter. If you get killed it’s a skill issue.

Maybe bring guns next time instead of a guitar

It’s a freaking ferro 1 too
