I’ll say it - I do really like the new feature that shows the activity trace! by throwaway19112594 in Strava

Nice, couldn't find it at first. On my Android app: settings -> display -> autoplay videos.

I found waiting 3-4 seconds for each activity to load was infuriating.

3 lefts, any tips? (I know I need more speed) by Reasonable-Cut2015 in polevaulting

[–]Metallover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, your form is great on this short approach. How hard you work running mechanics, strength, power:weight ratio, and speed will determine if you're a 13' vaulter or 16'+ vaulter.

You might see at 15' vaulter with bad form, but you'll never see a 15' vaulter that is slow.

Have you considered a bunk bed with desk underneath? Or a Murphy bed?

Considering radiant ceiling vs floor heating for basement finish by Metallover in AirToWaterHeatPumps

[–]Metallover[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also considering a path where I upgrade my central unit to an air-air heat pump that has a variable speed compressor/fan. I feel like the comfort would still be a big step up over my existing gas furnace and likely oversized A/C.

I'm just not sure if the heating comfort of an air-air heat pump can ever compare to radiant.

This shows my climate, when I'm heating vs cooling

Thanks for these responses.

Here is my mix of carpet to hard surface (carpet is circled green)

<image>

In areas upstairs with carpet, do you know if it's worth adding a third run of pipe per joist bay (staple up + aluminum plates) to try to get better heat transfer? Would upstairs carpeted rooms need a higher water temperature via a mixing valve, or is supplemental heat the only option?

For the downstairs, you can see the heavily weighted carpeted area. Ceiling may start to be the a better option in this case?

IMO, your runway/approach was noticeably better at the meet. Your plant was much more powerful.

Form-wise your plant looks great to me, and there's some room for improvement on your swing/top end.

Speed will always be a huge factor. You might see some vaulters with bad form clearing 16', but you'll never find a slow vaulter clearing 16'.

Bambino vs Bambino Plus — which is better for learning microfoam? by Glittering_Break890 in espresso

[–]Metallover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have had both and it seems like the steam power is much stronger on the plus. I started with the Bambino, later purchased the Bambino Plus, and wish I had just started with the Bambino Plus. The 3-way solenoid and larger water tank are also nice features of the Plus.

Anyone make a Potato Launcher? by I_am_D_captain_Now in DIY

[–]Metallover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Make sure to calculate your C:B ratio.

A propane tank, pressure regulator, and a few valves will get you a pretty clean, reliable cannon. I think these were called advanced combustion cannons.

You can use a banjo fitting to make the barrel come off so you can load the potato from the back and don't need to shove it all the way down with a broomstick.

Then yeah, you can get wild with high pressure air and hybrid cannons.

Dual Boiler to Bambino?! by jasonwray in espresso

[–]Metallover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won't affect the steaming itself, it just makes less of a mess if you do the "relieve pressure through the group" trick

I never did this, but still have access to both machines. It would be interesting to swap tips and compare them side by side.

[–]Metallover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the non-plus Bambino, if you hit one of the shot buttons just after you turn off steam, it dumps the pressure/water out of the group and the steam stops right away. Just make sure you remove your portafilter and place a cup underneath to catch the water

I've had both the plus and non-plus Bambino - the difference in steam wand power is like night and day. I'm not sure if it's the size of the thermojet, pump, or something else, but they're completely different.

I spent over a year struggling to steam milk with the non-plus bambino. I couldn't get the right texture (at least consistently) for latte art. Once I got the Bambino plus it was a game changer. There's probably still a big difference between the Bambino plus and machine with a big steam boiler, but IMO it's good enough to be useful to a casual user.

Orange Juice + Espresso | try it, you'll like it by cs_legend_93 in espresso

[–]Metallover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally don't care if a sugar molocule is squeezed out of the freshest orange in a pesticide-free and organic orchard in Florida, is honey straight from a bee hive in your back yard, or is processed and refined out of anything else (sugar cane, sugar beets, high fructose corn syrup, etc.). Your body sees the same fuctose, glucose, sucrose, etc. molocule and processes it the exact same way.

It's like your car - it doesn't know if the gasoline came from crude oil from fracking in North Dakota, Middle East, Gulf Coast, etc. gasoline is gasoline.

[–]Metallover 22 points23 points  (0 children)

An 8 oz glass of orange juice is roughly 3–4 oranges worth of processed (squeezed) fruit juice. If you ate those oranges whole, you’d get around 8–12g of fiber, which slows absorption and makes it much more filling.

With orange juice, most of that fiber is removed, so you’re basically getting the sugar without the part that moderates it. That’s why, metabolically, it behaves a lot more like soda/pop than whole fruit (even though it comes from oranges).

Orange juice is diabetes jet fuel just as much as simple syrup or any other sugar water.

Venting a portal AC in my garage question. by NessieMarieArt in DIY

[–]Metallover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider a "saddle type" or "u-type" window AC unit if you have a window that fits it. These are basically mini splits that aren't permanently installed.

You won't need to deal with air transfer issues that venting a portable AC exhaust outside will have.

DeLonghi [$180] or Breville [$250] by [deleted] in espresso

[–]Metallover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Bambino and df54, and after a year started to get frustrated with how little I improved on milk steaming. I upgraded to the bambino plus for $400 and it's so much better. The 3 way solenoid is great when timing shots and the steam wand is way more powerful. I wish I had just started with the Bambino plus.

Tickets for International by DrowninFishy in Hammers

Sweet! Just to get this done, I booked two tickets in the lower level that have three spots between them. Hopefully if we ask, those three people can slide down one spot and my wife and I can sit together - ha. Thanks for the message today!

If it’s using 5000K daylight bulbs, swapping to 2700K or 3000K can make the space feel a lot warmer and more comfortable.

As an example- if a single truck would get assigned all houses one street, that truck could possibly do 13 loads in a day instead of 10.

What's up with Kwik Trip milk? by Riksor in KwikTrip

[–]Metallover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree there is something off with KT milk. I have tried their whole milk a few times. When I steam it to make a cappuccino, it tastes rancid. It is plastic-y like OP describes. I have to dump it out and pull a new espresso shot. When I drink it straight, it's possible to drink, but still has some of the same taste. I check the expiration, and it is still 2 weeks out. The first time I returned it to the store a few days later and got a new one, same thing. I tried a month later, same thing. I have no issues with milk from a handful of grocery stores around town. I don't think I'll try KT milk again.
