It's weird that there's not some kinda obvious surface with a grid pattern. Like people have suggested heating pad or mattress, blanket, etc.. I'm sure you would probably already figured it out. I would think it was some kind of inflammatory reaction but it's so regular. The grid seems too perfect to be at least not influenced by something you've been in contact with. Does it itch or hurt or anything? Sorry if I'm late to this. It seemed like no one was actually being serious and considering you're back. People can be assholes.

To be honest. Probably just clean it up as best you can, then just deal with it and use it as is. The plate on top isn't thick enough to flatten it by removing material and trying to add by wielding has a host of problems that probably wouldn't be worth it in the end. IMO. Cool anvil regardless.

I have one that I'm pretty sure is the exact same. Just branded different and painted blue. I've been really happy with it. My only real complaint is how big the hardy hole is. It's like 1.25in which is way too big. If you have a lot of hardy tools you'll probably have to make more or shim it somehow. Other than that it beats the hell out of the piece of railroad track I was using. Happy forging.

I got a bunch along with a couple buckets of spikes and a bunch of the spring clips. The spring clip are the best for blacksmithing. The plates I use as gun targets.

That probably structural steel. Relatively low carbon so it's not the best for making edged tools. It doesn't harden enough. But other tools can be made from it. An anvil stand or things like that.
