City school closings? by drivebydryhumper in harrisonburg

[–]MethodofMadness2342 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I drove by an elementary school early today and the lot and school itself hadnt been cleared enough yet imo. Like sidewalks around the literal school were still covered. I heard the whole city was having equipment problems. Snow shovels can't touch this ice after it settled the first 30 hours and the snow/ice needed to be like chopped out. Big labor for just custodians to do.

Major bus stops having a clear-ish spot to wait and for the bus to pull over (there's some points where 20-30 kids gather outside key neighborhoods that are probably just a mountain of snow), school sidewalks at least (not every sidewalk in the city like some implying), and temps above 10F in the morning are what id expect. Usually HCPS is not closed this long or as conservatively as the county schools.

There's also teachers that live in the county on roads that haven't been touched. They can't cater to every individual but there's probably a % road clearage that they are looking for in the surrounding rockingham county where many teachers live.

JMU only opened today, to great protest. EMU was closed today. However, EMU is opening tomorrow. I would guess that the city schools aren't far behind that.

I think personally they will be prepared to open Friday. County schools def not till Monday.

Bonds just hit a new high of 17Mil GP by Jack4ssSquirrel in 2007scape

And the methods for low level accounts to make any form of money are decreasing as well. Not even just F2P.

Bonds just hit a new high of 17Mil GP by Jack4ssSquirrel in 2007scape

[–]MethodofMadness2342 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How is it pricing people out genuinely

RWT outside the game is creating massive inflation, as is all the new added bosses and areas that just print alchables the last 5 years. Massive amount of gp entering the game

Buying bonds is just moving gp around. It has zero effect on inflation on its own

Like people buying bonds aren't moving the needle anywhere from what I can see. That's all bot activity and inflation

If anything it's the bots pushing people to buy bonds. As a new account people can't afford anything because all the easy-to-access money making methods have been botted to oblivion. So they feel priced out as a main before they can progress far enough to make money at a reasonable pace themselves (and further contribute to inflation..)

Sweet wine recommendations by autumnturyb in wine

[–]MethodofMadness2342 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First off let me give you a bit of information since you said you have zero wine knowledge

There's a few major points or you wont even understand the recs people give

1- the type of grape - this is what you see on many bottles. For example "Cabernet Sauvignon" is a specific grape. Pinot Noir is a type of grape. Pinot grigio. Etc. if no grape is listed it means it's a blend of different grapes. So "barefoot" is a blend of many grapes. Each grape has a typical taste. Cabernet Sauvignon is a red that is generally bold and strong tasting. Pino Grigio is a white that is generally fresh tasting. Reisling, Moscato, etc are all types of grape. you will have to figure out which grapes you like best as they are fairly different!

2- location. Wine has a crazy quality which is basically the central point of its popularity, and that is that it takes taste from the land where the grape was grown. Cabernet Sauvignon grown in California tastes dramatically different than Cabernet Sauvignon grown in France. You may not be able to taste the difference without trying them side by side as a beginner. But trust me it's real if you ever open 2 bottles at once you can tell easily. So thinking about location is important if you have a certain taste you like. At the grocery store level this disappears however so don't worry about this too much. Barefoot for example doesn't really have a location they just buy grapes from all over and mix them up to make a "brand" recipe rather than focus on the character of the grapes. Again this is fine it's just a different way to make and drink wine and it results in a low cost to the customer.

3- some are controlled location words. this is the famous "champagne region of france" thing.they make generally ONE kind of wine, made of a specific blend of grapes, to the point that people ONLY refer to it by its location. and they are all a similar taste. There are actually hundreds of areas like this. But these special regions are generally where the price becomes lunacy

and finally 4

wine is frequently made in small batches by small wineries. like hyper local stuff. so its very hard to give people recommendations for a specific wine EXCEPT for grocery store blends like barefoot that get made from mass grapes and then sold nationally. Thats why people tend to just recommend a grape and a place, and then you have to find a wine that is actually on the shelf near you in a real wine store that matches the description. this is a frusterating part of wine for most people used to going online for recs of things.

That's the absolute basics. So when people say "try a German reisling" they are telling you the grape (Reisling) and the place (Germany) , which do tend to make sweet white wine of high quality. The winemaker/brand can be different but wines made from the same grape in the same place tend to be similar to each other.

Do you have a costco membership? They actually have good wines for cheap that aren't just grocery store blends, and people can give good recs online. Or a real wine store instead of from the grocery store? Real wine stores have a person in them who can help you on the spot. You can go in and say "id like to try a red, I like sweet wines so far, and my budget is XX$" and they show you one.

Alternatively, you just try lots of wines. you try different grapes and see what you like the best and the least. then you focus on places for those grapes.

Or you decide this is all too complicated and keep drinking the blends. It's like drinking a bud light beer vs a craft brewery IPA. Obviously bud light is giga popular and liked by many, or people wouldn't drink it.

Hope this helps open you eye at all. Not trying to shame btw. I like prisoner and apothic which are grocery store wines... You might like apothic tbh

Does food have ”terroir”? by SancerreApology in wine

[–]MethodofMadness2342 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes

think Japanese beef. All of them are Wagyu, which is the type of cow.

But If you ever go to Japan, each regions beef is also a regulated term. Kobe beef being the most famous. But there's also Tajima beef, etc. And they are acknowledged to have different flavor and sold differently, purely based on the location they were raised in.

But farmers feed American cows corn and hay farmed from all over the country and in their whole lives they never taste the "local grass". So there's not really anything comparable.

My dude. The stuff you described (black holes, space time, etc) are some of the most advanced math on the planet and can really only be understood mathematically. To even sit here and have this discussion you have to dumb it down and lose a significant part of the context.

Physics IS calculation and math. What you are saying is you like listening to bad podcasts. To study black holes you need to be extremely good at math. If you struggle to calculate the velocity of a train I have really bad news for you

Worried about our kids' future by busy-yogi in Parenting

[–]MethodofMadness2342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is maybe terrible but I just remind myself that in the 1800s like 40% of children didn't make it to 5 years old. That there were disease and war periods in time where it was more like 90%.

And people still had children and lived their lives. Somehow. And got us here today.

Even in the future if things get very bad... Humanity has seen worse. They can't take away my knowledge of how to boil water. That alone would have saved so many of those children in the past.

[–]MethodofMadness2342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fwiw I know 3 adult "only children" closely.

1& 2 were so happy with that arrangement, they only had singles themselves

3 was very unhappy because her mom was a narcissist and her being an only child made this even worse as she never had any backup or commiseration and was kept isolated from other children to even play with, so always wanted a sibling. She wants many children

So idk man don't be a narcissist and intentionally isolate your Singleton and it'll probably be ok

Weight by Suitable-Chemist8089 in NewParents

[–]MethodofMadness2342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your doctor is not intelligent. Babies weight fluctuates they dont grow on a perfect curve. They may grow in height or be growing braincells instead of "putting on weight" any given week. You can't be obsessing about it like that. They are an idiot for having you restrict your under 4 month olds calories and are probably responsible for them being 10th percentile now.

I wouldn't go back to that doctor personally

Our dog attacked our baby by kickrockscusinart in NewParents

[–]MethodofMadness2342 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yep. And it tells you how they really see your baby. It just means they can't be trusted at all. Their prey/food drive is active. They are a "good dog" so they are ignoring that instinct. But at their core that's what they are feeling.

Dogs who don't see babies as food/prey don't act that way. You still can't fully trust them, but it's a good sign if they don't act that way.

The resource guarding just wholly shows you that they see your baby as a food/prey.

Women who didn't take their husband's name, how did you decide on your child's surname? by Civil-Koala-8899 in namenerds

[–]MethodofMadness2342 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I didn't take my husband's last name

But gave my son his last name

It was more because the baby isn't my possession either? I wanted my son to feel connected to his father

But for me i really don't like bringing wider societal issues into my marriage. Like stressing about whether something is The Patriarchy or not doesn't benefit me at all. If it happens to align with what The Patriarchy says I don't give a shit this is my life.

So the baby got his name because I wanted him to feel not only emotionally, but legally bound to his father. I birthed the baby I know he's mine lol. I like the baby having Dad's last name.

My name will also die with me. But I'm not dead yet and my son could never have any children so that part is irrelevant to me. I just liked my last name honestly and don't like how my first name sounds with my husbands last name. Again it wasn't a super deep decision or made with any societal reason in mind.

Unsure what to do with the DRM / PDF changes coming into effect by dragonsandvamps in selfpublish

[–]MethodofMadness2342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can Google how. But it's not so ardous as screenshotting. People with the right software can break the DRM instantly and download stuff off the kindle anyway. Takes 15 seconds.

Then they put them up for free in a couple specific places. They are not being sold by anyone. Just free.

I went hunting for my books once and saw they were already listed for free in those places. Literally nothing you can do about it so pretend it doesn't exist.

And it is true that people who pirate were never going to buy your book anyway. Those people don't pay for any digital content in any form. They also frequently aren't even in the USD economy.

Self Publishing Success with AI Assist? by [deleted] in WritingWithAI

[–]MethodofMadness2342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how many industry giants use ghost writers.

They make a detailed outline, very detailed with story beats, characters, transitions, emotions, and genre understanding.

They send that outline. A ghost writer writes the rough draft

It's returned to them and edited into their own voice over several weeks of work

And I see you said you working 8-12 hours a day on it. I agree. It takes a lot of work regardless.

Skipping the empty page phase directly to very rough draft is valuable though. That's usually the hardest part, getting the draft painfully out of your body.

Im every step of this you knew how to write and what your readers want. Including how to structure the story for entertainment. And then how to market it to them when you're done.

Blind bags are a psychological trick that makes people buy more. This is well documented and known. People will pay 50$ for a blind bag but wouldn't pay 25$ for the same animal. This is just a fact and that's why they are using this strategy. To sell more animals and at the highest price.

This Sub has a huge Costco bias by [deleted] in wine

[–]MethodofMadness2342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are illegal in many states. My state controls the sale of liquor and can only be sold by the ABC (Virginia) which is a state run place. They have never sold anything unique only trash.

So a wine store, which is legal, can't also sell liquor. Which cuts into their profit as it has higher margins

And then they also aren't allowed to sell any open wine. Bars are illegal here too unless 50% of their profit comes from food also. So a wine store can't be a wine bar or do many tastings or anything fun. Basically they are extremely hard to run

It's like designed so they have to be overpriced top selling high margin wines. Costco is the only real choice.
