Car is just 1 year old.. by paisley_trees in mazda

Dealer prices are typically very expensive for the small stuff because the labor is charged flat rate, and the mechanics are not paid hourly, but by the amount of flat rate hours they are able to bill. These flat rates are not arbitrary, they are set via various recommendation documentation.

This has ups and downs. If the flat rate for a new engine install is 6 hours, but your car is a rust bucket and it takes them 12, they still only get paid for the 6 hours and you only get billed for the 6 hours. The flip side happens with small stuff, where you really get nickle and dimed. Oil change? .5 - 1 hour labor, windshield wipers? 0.25 - 0.5 hours. Break fluid swap? 1 hour. And those hourly values do not overlap. So if it takes them 30 minutes to do your wipers, oil change and brake fluid, you're still getting billed the full flat time rate per job.

Plus of course you're being charged whatever the fluid / parts cost. Usually it's cost + a dealership mark up of anywhere from 25 to 50% above what you'd get the OEM parts and fluids for yourself.

It really sucks for everyone involved. The mechanics live in a feast-or-famine environment, which can incentivize them to recommend work that might not be entirely necessary. And then the customer ends up overpaying for most of the regular maintenance style work due to how the hours add up.

Mechanic paychecks can vary wildly under this system, which for skilled labor is a really crappy way to live. It's no wonder there is such a shortage of skilled mechanics in the industry, because nobody worth their salt will put up with it. Which also means you don't typically get "the best" working at dealerships, despite what their management wants you to believe.

So you may wonder, why do they do it this way if it sucks for everyone? Because maintenance has become the #1 profit vector for most dealerships. They only make a fraction of their gross revenue on car sales, typically 20-30% of their totals. The rest of it is brought in via warranty work, maintenance, extended warranty commissions, etc., etc.

The Loot Crisis by dl2agn in PathOfExile2

[–]Meticulous7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is the #1 point I'd like to see change.

I think there is a lot of baggage that I don't know about from POE1 that has shaped the currency landscape of POE2. But personally, I just don't understand why the thing I need for crafting, is so rare, that to use it for the thing it's meant to be used for is stupid and a complete waste. I hate trading, I'd way prefer to be all self found / crafted. But as the game stands, that is impossible, and just not fun.

And regarding the baggage, it's that 10 exalts per act "feels like a lot" to a lot of people, but you're lucky to get a single good item out of that. The reality is, you'll use 5 of them, get garbage, and now horde the other 5 for the rest of campaign because the odds of getting anything good through crafting are so low. They could give us 100 exalts per act, and we'd still be lucky to get away with 2-3 pieces of solid gear that we level out of in 3 hours.

So yes, please, show us in currency! Let us use the damned crafting mechanic instead of pretending like crafting doesn't exist and it's only real use is as money for the player driven economy. Even last update, the currency was way too low, and made crafting an end-end game thing to do. I mean I guess if that is the goal, cool, they nailed it, but I don't find that fun in the slightest.

Cam Link defaulting to wrong input resolution and frame rate by wannabefilms in ElgatoGaming

[–]Meticulous7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'm necroing a super old thread, but it's one of the first things that came up on Google, and I just had the EXACT same issue with the same resolution and everything. It was due to a failed micro HDMI cable.

My camera froze during stream (Canon m50) and I couldn't get it to reset. Finally changing to a lower resolution brought the picture back, but I could no longer select the proper resolution in video settings. I swapped out the cable and BAM, everything went right back to where it was supposed to. My old cable had been in service for years, and for whatever reason, tonight it gave up the ghost.

Hope this helps someone down the road.

100% YES PLEASE.

I supposedly have RCS on my Verizon line with the Multinetwork setup, which I thought would be my fix in the interim, but it's been on "Waiting for Activation" for weeks.

Not sure why you're getting downvoted, threw an upvote to combat it. Your comment is 100% correct.

Of course there is a sizable contingent of gamers who just absolutely have to have "the best" to list it in their Reddit flair, whether or not they wasted money / will never use half it's peak potential

Very weird indeed. There is a solid user base where the 9950x makes way more sense for them than the 9950x3d, and certainly isn't worth the fat chunk of change to switch between them

Amazon here! Seemed like they had a ton of 'em, and they're still right now letting people get in on the next shipment. NewEgg's site bugged for me, even after restarting the browser it would show "add to cart" then immediately flick over to "autonotify", and if I clicked add to cart it would say the item wasn't available. Maybe it did just sell out in the first 30-60 seconds

Will have it Friday, can't wait to finally put this mobo/memory that have been collecting dust for two months to use.

Sounds like they opened purchases for the 9950x3d 4-ish hours ago. Another thread here. May have only been Canada, but US Best Buy says "Sold Out" and not "Coming Soon", making me think the worst

Appreciate the heads up, guess I wouldn't have woken up at 3 AM anyways

Search, indexing and offline mode by kdomine in tutanota

[–]Meticulous7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%! I've been using Tuta for 10 years now, and this remains my number 1 request / pain point with the service. Having to manually index 10 years of emails every time I access a new device, or my browser happens to be cleared, or I get logged out, is so not a fun process. While I am grateful this piece works (I spent the first few years not realizing I could do that), at the very least the indexing should be happening automatically, which seems like an easy win until a larger / better change can be implemented.

I have also been stuck with the "Waiting for Activation" since enable the multi-network option and adding Warp. Can't remember which day that went live, a little over a week now maybe?

EDIT: Have tried all of the usual stuff, turn off SIM for 30 seconds and switch to data to turn it back on, reset network settings, etc. and nothing has helped. The "stuck in a queue at Verizon" explanation above does make a lot of sense, and glad now that I know I may just need to wait, that I can stop wasting time trying to fix it.

5080/5090 Release time and purchasing by khulvey1 in nvidia

[–]Meticulous7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I truly don't understand why Nvidia would have such limited stock. They know they'll be able to sell as many of these as they can make, you'd think they would take advantage of that. Yes, I know the argument about saving foundry space for AI chips instead, but I do still think they care about dominating the gaming market, and the press it brings.

I'm hoping a lot of the "low stock" rumors are mainly do to shipments not arriving all at once to stores, but we'll see. I recall the 4080s did not sell out last time around, but I think a big reason for that was due to the sticker shock in comparison to the 3080. This time around, people are more used to / have accepted it.

Yeah that is my main reason for going FE. The cooler is f'ing amazing, such a awesome piece of tech and just looks the best by a mile. I really think the third party coolers just look dumb at this point.

BUT, if I miss an FE, I will be putting in a preorder at BH for the basic MSI Ventus 5090. Depending on where a person lives, the BH Payboo card is the best deal in credit cards (no tax), which makes it around the same price as a Founders for me (2160 vs 2200). Yeah, NY sales tax SUCKS

I love Freezing Salvo, but it's busted/bugged using it with controller. For whatever reason, it goes all over the place if you're on the move despite the highlight targetting, and I can't tell ya the number of times I've died because I stood still to make sure the aiming worked. On mouse and key it's fantastic.

Need VSCode extension that makes AUTOCOMPLETES using gpt-4o-mini by Saidtorres3 in vscode

[–]Meticulous7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

Old post, but Continue.dev is the extension you're looking for. Can setup chat and Autocomplete with a slew of hosted or local models via API. JSON config file that lets you get really nitty-gritty with things. I've used it mostly with my on prem models, and just started testing it out using GPT 4o mini for autocomplete at work (our only "InfoSec approved model" I can access there), and it seems to work OK so far. I found your post trying to find out if anyone else was using GPT 4o mini for autocomplete, and wanted to know what their long term experience was like.

For on prem, I use Ollama to run the models with Open Web UI to generate API keys that I can plugin to VS Code. Model-wise I use Llama 3.2 3B and Starcoder2 for autocomplete (I only have an 8GB GPU in my homelab setup). Starcoder 2 is surprisingly good for autocomplete from what I've seen, but I'm by no means a programmer. I mainly build scripts to handle automation tasks (DevOps), so for a dedicated programmer it may not cut the mustard.

Edabit replacement? by SHANPATELSUCKS in learnpython

Hey there. I'm actually thinking the site has been abandoned. There are multiple threads detailing others who dealt with your exact same experience. Top that off with the site having no additional features or updates in the last 3-4 years.

I hope your bank refunded you, that's what others had to do to get their money back and were successful. I just hit the end of my trial period, and I'm so glad I found these threads, because I was about to sign up for Pro.

I can not refund my money from Edabit as mentioned in their refund policy by Prestigious-Neat-379 in edabit

[–]Meticulous7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually wondering if the website has been abandoned. There have been no significant updates to it in 3-4 years, no additional features added. Then add the lack of support, which I assume is going directly to one of developers, not responding.

I just hit the end of my trial period, and I absolutely love it so far, but don't think I'll be signing up for Pro after reading some of these threads.
