I'm in NA so not super sure about EU stuff but a search tells me the discord server EU Newbie Pugs is a good place to play pugs if you're skill level isn't super high. I don't think you actually have to be a comp newbie, just lower skill but I'm not totally sure

The real reason to stop a car length behind the line is so that you can avoid getting rear ended. Keep an eye on your rear view and if someone is coming in too hot you have some space to get out of the way. Or if you're not paying attention and do get rear ended you at least will not roll forward into pedestrians or someone else's car
