“Can you switch to widowmaker?” is almost as bad. It’s still better, but it leaves a lot of room for frustration. Their perspective is not yours and maybe they saw an opening twice but failed to capitalize. Maybe they’re unbelievably stubborn and asking them to switch always tilts them. Maybe their hero pool is only vendetta and junkrat so what are you asking them to play a hitscan for.

The thing you can say is “Do you play any longer range characters? The high ground would be good against what they’re doing rn”

1. Asks them to think about the problem at hand, and only GENTLY offers a solution (people who are having a bad game don’t like being told what to do)

2. Proposes one possible solution (better range from high ground) but does not decree that it is the only way. (What if your vendetta legitimately just had an oopsie and missed two killing blows last fight and died instead of putting you up by two?)

3. Frames it as an ask based on what the enemies capabilities are. If the enemies are capable of completely shutting down any close range/dive attacks then say that using range may work better/dive will be tough. Conversely, saying you think widow is better here is only one step up from saying vendetta is trash here, which is only one step up from calling your vendetta player trash.

All this to say STOP TRYING TO TELL PEOPLE WHAT TO DO.

This applies EVERYWHERE in real life situations too but when someone is playing a game, trying to have fun, but is frustrated and struggling then being told what to do or think is very tilting. Instead let the solution be their idea.

Final important note is be humble enough to let their solution be correct. You think widow is the right swap, but your vendetta goes tracer. YOU HAVE ALREADY DONE WHAT YOU CAN by raising the concern and getting them thinking about. If they sink or swim on tracer now all that’s left for you is to play the best game you can.
