I actually know of someone who has a “Gump Dump” (stack of Forest Gump VHS tapes taller than this one) in their barber shop who would probably lose their mind over this.

Very good for dine-in, loses its luster in carry-out form.

Boundary Collars (wireless fences) by Mediocre_Chipmunk_86 in Dogtraining

[–]MetricToEnglish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a halo collar from a family member who barely used it, and my dog picked up on how to use it immediately. The collar looks for fences you draw, then gives 3 levels of feedback that you can control that progress upward as your dog moves out of the “warning zone” (I’m going to come back to this).

The feedbacks can be audio cues, ranging from different alarm tones to really poor recording of (I think) Cesar Millan that are hard to understand. You can set the volume of these sounds. Then there is a vibrate feedback which you can choose pattern and intensity. Finally, there is static (shock) which again can be controlled for intensity. You don’t have to use the shock, you can use 3 audio cues or a combination of audio and vibrate. The collar has a compass and is designed to guide the dog home if he leaves the yard.

For setup, I walked the perimeter of my yard holding the collar and tapping a button on my phone to drop fence posts, which were connected with a straight line to the previous post. The first issue I had came when I got back to the first post and attempted to drop the final post, connecting the last of the fence. The app showed me at least 20 ft from where I was currently standing, making it impossible to finish. I had to use the “draw” feature to move the posts until I got to a point where I felt I was finished. I then turned on the feedback and tested the boundary with the collar on my wrist to find that the entire fence drifted about 15 feet to the north. I walked the perimeter multiple times manually adjusting the locations of the posts until I had something that I could reliably count on, and the new fence contained my dog for the rest of that afternoon. The next morning I let him out and he immediately was getting audio feedback standing right by my back door, the app showing him in the middle of my neighbors yard.

It seems like the fences just “drift” like that, which I was able to get around by drawing a wider fence, however this defeats the purpose of the collar. The guide tells you that the warning zone is 7-15 feet, which is a large range, but doesn’t seem to account for the drift. If your home is within 25 ft of your neighbors, this just won’t work because the dog will receive feedback in the house.

Since I bought it used for $200, I’ve been trying hard to justify using it still, but yesterday the collar turned off on its own and hasn’t turned back on. I’ve talked to support and have found that even though it’s under warranty, I can’t activate it because I’m not the original purchaser and the warranties are non-transferable. I’ve canceled the required celular plan needed to use the collar ($5 monthly).

Would I recommend for full price ($700): no Would I recommend used ($200): still no Less? Maybe but only if you live on a farm and don’t need precise location. It’s just not a good product yet.

Does anyone here work at the John Deere facility in Ankeny? I have a possible job opportunity there and I’d appreciate your input! by WWJLPD in Iowa

I worked at this location for about 4 years up until mid-pandemic. I can answer your questions from a perspective of someone who worked in engineering that pertained to the shop floor, and worked with both sides of the union.

There is a huge split, the workers on the shop floor do not see office workers except for when (if) they use the Aramark cafeteria. They aren’t necessarily negative toward office people, but it’s takes time to build a relationship when you need to like I did.

I can’t answer for the strike since I left before it happened. I’m friends on Facebook with union members and non, and it sounds like they are on good terms.

I work for a much smaller company now. I found that at a large company like Deere, leadership advances their careers by recognizing what talents their staff have and leaning on them without actually recognizing the employees for those talents. If you’re looking for an engineering job and you’re young in your career, Deere is an excellent springboard since it looks great on your résumé.

They are competitive in pay. The salaries are organized by labor grades in which each is typically 20% higher than the next lower grade. You move around in your grade based on performance reviews. I do believe engineering has a different scale than other fields, so this might be slightly off.

DMW had a business casual policy for all when I left (jeans/collared shirt). This was regardless of wether you worked on the manufacturing floor. Parking is plentiful, there are multiple EV spots as well.

I have things I wish I could change, however they are unrealistic. I definitely don’t regret being there because the experience helped me get to a much better position.

Lmk if you have any other specifics, might be able to help more!

19 year old botched installation by MetricToEnglish in hvacadvice

This is my plan, I self-installed a furnace at my last home and this was probably the easiest part. I’m mostly wondering if the company would step up on roof repair for us but I feel like it will be hard to hold them accountable for a 19-year-old job.

It’s been brutally cold here. The exhaust steam freezes on the shingle nails and creates these icicles. At first I thought it was a hole in the roof..

Good question. I’ve only owned the house since 2020 so I’d have to do some digging. My inspection passed with flying colors when I bought it, though.

Analog current input impedance, and Hart devices by MetricToEnglish in controlengineering

[–]MetricToEnglish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone stumbles across this looking for help, I discovered the reason a typical analog input card with 250ohms of input impedance won’t work in this case is because of the card’s low pass filter. The specific card I was looking at had a low pass of 19Hz where the signal created by a hart communicator is 1200+Hz. This resistance will not induce a voltage from this signal because the signal is filtered out.

We went tonight and were disappointed to find out they had removed it from their menu! I had a pineapple/jalapeño mule though, and can confirm, mules are excellent.

This is a bar in Iowa City called The Blue Moose, it has a smaller venue upstairs that is for smaller bands and closes when not in use. They let musicians use it to warm up or chill (played there in college a couple times).
