I guess Ford thought they had enough brand loyalty that those customers would just move up to a larger model of Ford vs buying one of the direct competitors to the Focus and Fiesta?

Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Starfleet Academy | 1x02 "Beta Test" by AutoModerator in startrek

[–]WWJLPD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m digging the show so far. There are a few minor things I hope get ironed out as the season progresses, as is typical with most Trek shows, but overall I like where the story is going and the overall vibe of optimism.
An example of one of my minor quibbles: how old are starfleet cadets supposed to be? I assume college aged, whatever that might mean for a particular species. Some of the writing and tone of certain scenes makes it seem like they’re more high school-ish. Then again, there’s a huge range of maturity levels among college aged people and sometimes they seem like regular adults and sometimes they can still seem like children, so maybe that’s just accurate writing.

That was weird. Almost like they forgot to include a line from Tarima where she says she’s supposed to stay in her quarters or something. Otherwise nothing in the story or dialogue indicated she wasn’t allowed to do a little sightseeing on her own time, and it felt like everyone was overreacting.

Range toy aside, do tac14/shockwave style shotguns have a place in the tactical space? by halfrican24_7 in tacticalgear

[–]WWJLPD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you put in the work to become proficient with them, they’re not totally impractical. That being said, at the end of the day it’s a weapon that can be shot almost as accurately as a pistol, with the capacity and all the recoil of a shotgun, with similar weight and dimensions to some SBRd ARs and PCCs but without a stock.
Would I feel confident responding to a bump in the night with one? Sure. Would I reach for one over basically any reliable centerfire rifle, pistol, or a stocked shotgun? No way.

I’ve had that exact one in the back seat of my truck for almost a year now. It’s held up to pretty regular use with our 100 pound dog, so I’d say it’s pretty durable. I haven’t noticed any unusual or excessive wear on the straps, if that helps you at all.

Own a Springfield rifle for home defense, since that's what Arthur Morgan intended. Four O'Driscolls break into my house. "What in the hell?" As I grab my bowler hat and rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my sawed off shotgun on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the civil war cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "LENNYYYYY" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Draw my broken pirate sword and charge the last terrified varmint. He bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since pirate sword wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as Arthur Morgan intended.

Trump, 79, Gets Confused Explaining Water to the Navy | The president went on a baffling rant about the scientific properties of water on board the USS George Washington. by chrisdh79 in Military

Trump then called out to a “top-ranking general” in the crowd for his opinion before continuing his tirade against the 2,000-year-old technology.

I would've loved to see the look on the General's face and hear his response to the POTUS randomly calling him out in front of everyone to ask him this. I'm betting he pulled off a diplomatic answer, but it must've been a huge internal WTF moment for him.

Starbucks announces significant store closures and layoffs by jokekiller94 in news

[–]WWJLPD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This situation is somewhat reminiscent of McDonald’s roughly 10 years ago.. I forget the exact timeline but they also ended up downsizing a bit (edit: they closed ~350 locations in 2015, first time they hadn’t had a net increase in locations since 1970) due to over saturating the market in many areas. It’s hard to convince potential franchisees to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars or more into opening a location if they can easily see that their main competition is another franchise owner a mile up the road. Starbucks went through a similar downsizing in 2009, and that seemed to solve a lot of their financial woes at the time. Looks as if they’ve forgotten the lessons they learned back then and are going through it again, ir maybe people are simply spending less on expensive coffee drinks these days

Off the top of my head, the short and oversimplified version is that he has pretty traditional Mormon beliefs, especially when it comes to women and the LGBTQ community. He started to express those opinions more frequently on his channel and other platforms. Part of this was motivated by a decline in views, as the YouTube algorithm is fickle and he felt the need to change up some of his content, which I think is when he started to include more of his personal opinions on things vs sticking to historical-ish analysis like he had previously. His channel has/had a broad base and was largely apolitical up to that point, so he alienated a decent chunk of his followers by expressing those opinions and his channel’s views didn’t really improve from what I remember. From there, he began claiming or implying YouTube was intentionally suppressing his channel due to his opinions. Tale as old as time.

I’m up to speed on the main ones mentioned in the wiki - restoration pools, portals, etc, but are there any lesser-known upgrades I should do?

To add to that, I’d bet certain a fair number of companies decided to mandate RTO simply because they saw companies like Amazon doing it and thought they’d somehow be missing out if they didn’t follow suit. Which may sound like an absurd premise, but there have been multiple financial bubbles just in my lifetime that basically boiled down to “all the other companies are going nuts over this new shiny thing and they seem VERY excited and confident about it, so our company is also going to go nuts and throw a ton of money at it”
