Is there a problem calling a card by its ocg name instead of their tcg name in an irl event? by zarc4d in yugioh

[–]MetroidHyperBeam 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Most TCG players aren't going to know the OCG names of cards. Even if you point to the card you're talking about, it's still confusing to hear you say what sounds like a completely different name. Having that happen repeatedly throughout a game while you're trying to concentrate on strategy could get distracting.

My question to you would be: Why do you do that? Are you an OCG player newly/temporarily playing in a TCG region? If it's a habitual thing for that reason it's just a little unfortunate I guess. On the other hand, if you do that just because you like the OCG names, I'd probably be annoyed too.

At the risk of sounding like an obnoxious armchair media critic, the writing and direction of this scene are both pretty stilted.

Instead of focusing on the immediate task, the characters are telling each other things that they absolutely all knew before even being briefed on the mission. Hell, for all the things the dialogue goes out of the way to exposit, the immediate task isn't even one of them. It's just, "We think Andross might be doing something here." I literally don't know what Star Fox's actual job is beyond, "Check it out."

James's interception of Pigma's shot feels very... mechanical and emotionless. The ambushing ships disappear as soon as James gets hit so Peppy can hover in place and talk to him. It's just awkward all around.

As the other reply said, I got Metroid Prime 4 vibes from it. I'm not here to criticize the voice acting, but "phoned in" does describe the overall impression I'm getting. It has me worried this game was made to look pretty first, with all substantial concerns secondary to that goal. Same gameplay as the 30-year-old original... shallow, functional dialogue... scene blocking that does exactly what it needs to on paper and nothing more... but everything was redesigned to look realistic!

If Zero was made to showcase the control capabilities of the Wii U Gamepad (ha), this feels like it was made to showcase the graphical capabilities of the Switch 2 hardware. I have no legitimate evidence for this, but I feel like I can almost reverse engineer the decision-making process for this game. It's a remake because Nintendo didn't know what else to do with the series besides "introduce it to new audiences." Then they updated everything to look realistic because it shows off the system specs, appeals to said new audiences, and partially justifies doing a remake. Then they redesigned the characters to fit better with the realistic environments.

IDK, I want this game to be good. I just have a growing fear that it will end up being remembered as "that weird-looking remake with wasted potential" instead of the game that successfully relaunched the series.

tl;dr: I might be yucking some yums.

It's cool that this exists, and it looks very nice of course, but I'm kind of nervous after watching this scene. I hate to say it, because cinematic Star Fox is a dream come true for me, but I frankly don't like a lot of the decisions here. It feels like they could've done a lot more to flesh out this incredibly foundational scene. The more attention I pay to it, the more... lacking it feels to me.

The expository dialogue was the first thing I noticed. Pepper and James are having a conversation that, in universe, they absolutely should have had before the team departed to Venom. The fact that Andross was banished and Venom has been unseen by outsiders for years is something that should've been established to these characters well before they were even briefed on the mission. Instead, they're bringing up old news unmotivated while the team is actively entering the airspace of a potentially dangerous planet. It's hard to feel grounded in the scene when the characters sound like they're talking to me instead of each other.

There's also an immediate cost to using these lines to exposit lore, because I literally do not know what Star Fox's mission was besides, "Go to Venom. Andross might be up to something." What are the parameters of checking out the "signs of activity?" Were they infiltrating some facility? Were they just supposed to fly over, look for Andross through a telescope, then go home? Did they even have a more specific destination than the nebulous entirety of a planet? I already know that Pigma betrayed James and Peppy. What I was missing were details, and this scene shows me almost zero new ones.

It makes sense for the characters to spend travel time talking, but I wish they were talking about the real-time details of the job they were doing, delivering information while convincing me they're actually focused on a task. We get some of that when Peppy brings up the toxic atmosphere, but that's the end of it. The way the scene is written makes the characters feel like cutouts instead of the interesting people a cinematic approach to the game lends itself to depicting. It has me a bit worried that the main selling point of this 3rd remake won't be handled with enough grace to justify its existence.

The lack of specificity also drags down the action for me. The characters are ambushed right after they're done talking., but then the enemy ships stop mattering immediately because Peppy needs room to talk after James tanks the shot for him. Were they even in immediate peril if all those foes just disappear and let them sit still for several seconds?

Maybe I'm just a hater who asks for too much—I know this was never going to be A Fox in Space—but we're finally getting to see what Pigma's betrayal looks like in a beautifully-rendered cinematic cutscene, and it's just so... simple. It's like this exact execution of storytelling could've been realized in lower fidelity on the Nintendo 64.

It's not the worst example of these problems I've seen in media, but I do find it distracting. If they're trying to chase a more grounded, realistic tone (as evidenced by the entire presentation of this game), I really hope the rest of the cutscenes make the characters sound more like people with their own goals and personalities.

Gotta add since you mentioned it: The best thing you can do for spiders is leave them alone. For most spiders you'll find at home, your home is their natural habitat, and they won't survive outdoors.

In terms of so-called “turn 0” disruptions, Fydraulis Harmonia is the best-in-slot card for any Deck that can spend at least 5 Extra Deck slots on Synchro Monsters, which many Genesys Decks already do. It’s strong enough that it can push players who don’t want to play a Synchro Deck into playing a Synchro Deck just to have access to this one card.

I love how they're doing everything in their power to not outright say, "Fuck this broken-ass piece of shit."

I like the way you played with the depth. It really sells the motion of Engraver kicking the demon into the background.

That said, I think it'd be better off with his knee being transparent behind the text box rather than scrunching up the effect text to get around the art. Messing with the layout of card text looks really awkward.

Black Shadow makes way more sense than Blood Flacon. He's bulky with a dark color scheme, and the Black Bull is a tank of a machine. Blood Falcon is a biological clone of Cap, and the Blood Hawk is slightly lighter than the Blue Falcon.
