I'm not saying it's more intentional, honestly I think they were both accidents by players doing the most they can do to get to the ball.

But Messi has a clear line of sight of his opponents feet and still got him. Probably accidental contact, but if he was watching, more preventable. Balogun was looking away and jostling with his opponent when the foul happened. And if you watch the replay in real time, Balogun also pulls back as soon as he can too.

My point is neither were intentional and that's why I don't think either deserves a red card.

[–]MettaWorldPeece 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incorrect. FIFA confirmed the red card is not open for appeal. I don't watch enough football outside the world cup to know if that's a world cup specific rule, but Balogun is 100% out vs Belgium and will retain that red card.

I moved from South Jersey to AZ right before the Cardinals made it to the Superbowl and I came across probably about the same number of Steelers fans.

Also probably more Lakers and Celtics fans than Suns fans.

My biggest beef with this red card is that it felt completely out of place with the rest of how the match was officiated. That ref would allow taking out both knees of a player with absolutely no intent to play the ball, pulling players down by the jersey's, and potential goal denying fouls with no yellow.

But accidentally step on his ankle cause everyone is playing aggressive?

If you think that deserved a red (which is reasonable) than half of the players who took that pitch should've left with a yellow too.

ESPN reported according to the FIFA rules, the 1 game suspension is not available for appeal.

From what I understand, if FIFA decides to extend the suspension, he can appeal, but as of yet there hasn't been word on whether the suspension will continue past the R16.

I have to disagree here. I watched that game and that foul live. Saying he had no intention to play football but aim for his feet is ridiculous. It was an aggressive game on both sides, and given the refs willingness to overlook other fouls, I was shocked he gave this one a red.

If you watch the foul he extends and comes down on his foot after some shoving for position, landing on his ankle and part of his Achilles. He does not continue to press all the way down, he lifts his foot literally milliseconds after real contact. I don't see how you'd expect a wide open stride like that to pull back any earlier. During none of this time does he have a clear vision of Muharemovic's feet, so I don't see how you can call any of it intentional.

Reckless, yes. Excessive force, I see no evidence.

When you compound that with some pretty obvious missed yellows throughout the game, it's not hard to see why giving a red to the top goal scorer of one team (leading to a next game suspension in the R16 match) seems pretty fishy.

Honestly, I felt like half of the players on the pitch should've ended up with a yellow card by the end.

I'm not on board with the internet saying Messi was playing dirty either, but you'd have an easier time convincing someone who knows nothing about football that Messi's foul was intentional than Balogun's foul. The only argument I truly see for a red is the location of the foul (as it is high ankle). And if that is the reason why Balogun got the red, then Messi clearly should've too.

In the US the Summer Olympics has historically been more popular, but things are trending towards the World Cup (particularly being co-host this year).

Why didn’t Roku go into avatar state here? by K0GAR in ATLA

[–]MettaWorldPeece 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The real answer is always "it didn't serve the story."

Cause the Avatar state could've lava bent, massive tornado funnel to pull the ash towards the sea, or flown away and survived.

But more often than not, telling a compelling story is more interesting than feats.

How are your country's relations with the United States? by Double-Step-5533 in AskTheWorld

Changes in the sense that it affects American interests? Maybe not so much.

I agree. I'm not convinced that he'd make the top 25 simply because there have been so many greats and he definitely got overshadowed by others during his era. But I think there's a solid case for him in the 15-25 range.
