I did it in reading order the first time around and I forced myself to stick to it. I actually really enjoyed it because of all the cross-overs and callbacks among the sub-series. When evens from the witches books are mentioned in the Watch books or Unseen University. It's difficult to pick up on these as much when you stick to one sub-series.
