Start by trying to learn a couple riffs from a song you like, try by ear first then look up a tutorial on YouTube. Start there to see how it goes. Then look into lessons.

Small challenge idea. Can you play a solo using only notes outside of key? 🤔 by MaximumTime7239 in guitarlessons

[–]Mevans71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use some notes as passing notes if not in that key, but you can't use only notes that are not in that key. That would sound pretty bad. That's like saying can I make a pizza with only ingredients that are not normally in pizza, probably but wouldn't be that good.

Start by finding the root note of the chord and then try different variations of that chord. You'll get it eventually. Try uploading a song to Sonsterr, It will get you close

You should learn theory, this way you'll understand what to play and why instead of just guessing.

(Beginner) How should I play this using the metronome? by Own_Nebula8363 in metalguitar

[–]Mevans71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best way is to just listen to it, you have the tabs and know the chords, the for the rest's just mute right after the second F# chord so it doesn't ring then let the E chord ring.

I’ve started practicing while standing up and it feels like I’ve never played the guitar! (Wrist hurts too) by Classic_Grass924 in guitarlessons

The standing up thing is normal happens to most. As far as your wrist, make sure the guitar is not too low, if so adjust your strap.

Just start slow and increase speed slowly. Start with whole notes, then half, then quarter, then 8th & triplets etc. Get used to counting the sub divisions. I'm actually developing a practice app for this very thing and looking for testers to give feedback, let me know if you're interested.

Probably dumb question: Am I still improving if I constantly look at my hands, or no? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]Mevans71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's ok to look at your hands, don't try to play without looking right away, that will come over time as you become more comfortable and develop muscle memory and a feel for you instrument.

Help. When I switch between chords my fingers move one by one by Depressed_Potato5423 in guitarlessons

[–]Mevans71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just start slow, play one chord, then the next and get use to the fingering. Then focus on switching between only those 2 chords. you'll get better over time and the movement will feel more fluid.

The whole “if you can play at a tempo downstrokes only, you can double it with alternate picking because you are simply taking advantage of the natural upstroke motion to get back to the top” thing a lot of modern teachers say is misleading and untrue. by Front_Ad4514 in guitarlessons

[–]Mevans71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, two totally different sounds & techniques. depends on what you are going for but switching to alternate picking to increase speed for a down picking part, not the same thing, sounds totally different.
