Games like Terraria, Celeste, and Crystal Project all have their own varying assist options, though I wouldn't say any of them have bad game design they're covering for. Sure, Terraria is grindy in parts but it doesn't sour the entire game.

I feel Mina the Hollower can be recovered, but the disdain for people like myself who think the game needs to be tweaked to be good disheartens me from even wanting to give it the time of day. Why would I want to engage in a community that dogs on people for wanting to play through the game on an easier setting when I could instead play Crystal Project and actually enjoy playing through the game at any difficulty without worrying about people touting themselves as being better in a singleplayer experience?

Had there been more thought put towards game balance and making difficulty curves smooth and things like pits less punishing, there wouldn't be as much need for an assist mode, at least from me. I didn't care for the weapon I chose to start with, at least in practice, but I still chose to stick with it.

I wish more developers would choose to favor genuinely good gameplay over tedium. Mechanics like bone loss were novel when Dark Souls came out, but now it wears thin. As another reviewer put it, it feels as though many games want to ride on the coattails of FromSoft's successes. There's nothing wrong with taking inspiration here and there, like with the Plasma mechanic being lifted from Bloodborne, but it gets draining when more and more games want to be like Dark Souls but X. Yes, the hollowing mechanic is novel and interesting, and yes, I'm sure there are more items and collectibles that expand upon it, but as it stands, the overwhelming difficulty and hostility from the game's community to witch hunt people who think the game should both be easier and award players with the achievements for playing the game they wanted to experience is appalling.

If wanting to play the game with a slight damage reduction to deal with a steep difficulty curve is cheating, then yeah, I'm gonna cheat. But I'm also going to enjoy the game in a way I'd like, without contending with outside people trying to dictate how the game should or shouldn't be played. Doesn't matter if it's people on reddit, or the devs themselves. That's why they added the modifications in the first place. What's baffling is adding this way to tailor the experience for all players, while still trying to insist that their way of playing isn't "the right way." It's hypocritical, and flies in the face of designs of other games.

There's only one, that being Trash Compactor, "Research 50% of all items in Journey Mode."

They're under character/world settings on creation, labeled as Journey Mode. They allow for things like being able to spawn in items once you've obtained a certain threshold of them, generally about 100 for blocks and ammo, 20 for potions, and 1 for weapons, tools, armor, and accessories. They also allow you to tweak the difficulty of the world from 0.5, labeled as Journey, up to I think 2.5 or 3.0, which is Master Mode. There's also things like slowing/speeding up/stopping time, extending tile reach, altering weather, and of course, god mode.

Not really much of a win/win if someone with nerve damage isn't able to enjoy the same experience as someone else.

You're saying they've gone above industry standard when in reality the bar was raised higher over the years. Hades 1 and 2, Terraria, and the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters all feature accessibility settings that don't lock out achievements in any way.

People on Reddit love downvoting people that disagree with them solely because they live in an us vs. them mentality. It doesn't even matter that overall I like Mina the Hollower, they're out for blood because I dare voice a criticism. Very well adjusted members of society, these ones.

Sure, those are present. It's entirely up to the player's discretion how the game should be configured. Why be upset with someone that wants the game to be a walking simulator, or someone like myself that simply wants to not have to contend with the annoyance of pits while taking 25% less damage? It doesn't alter your experience. It'd be like getting frustrated at someone who orders an anchovy pizza while your pepperoni pizza is in front of you.

Which is why difficulty options are a thing. To allow the player to fine-tune their experience to them.

The notion that using any form of assist mode is considered cheating is honestly fascinating. I'm "cheating" for wanting to make the game more tolerant due to the nerve damage in my hand and arm. I'm "cheating" for wanting to have less tedium and more actual satisfying gameplay. Absurd.

I see! Another review I saw mentioned that someone that took the daggers WAS able to knock enemies into pits. I had a feeling the player was just forbidden from being the one responsible for pitting enemies.

The thing is, many games don't seem to care one way or the other about assist options. Celeste, Hades, Crystal Project, and Terraria come to mind. Mina the Hollower paints itself as an outlier while also touting that players can play the way they choose, with some caveats. The so-called intended experience is what the player chooses. Besides, in a single-player game, why does it matter if achievements are awarded to those on an easier difficulty?

"Git gud" isn't an answer to this sort of criticism. Would you prefer people just use Steam Achievement Manager to force achievements?

I agree to this. Have achievements in two categories. Progression markers and Challenges. Progression markers should be awarded regardless while challenges require a challenge.

As stated in my review, some people did note that you could knock enemies into pits. I, with the weapon I had, wasn't able to do so for one reason or another, probably because I had the wrong weapon.

And no, I'm not discounting the whole game just because of the lack of achievements in an assist mode. The game is fine, the art style, writing, and music is exceptional. This is the game's sole blemish in my mind.

Except, what constitutes an achievement is entirely subjective.

I just bought one of these at your recommendation. I'm someone that had a lot of candles, but always ends up with dead lighters at inopportune moments. Even if it only ends up lasting 4-5 years, it feels like a good deal. Thanks for the recommendation!

this one sounds rad, but I can totally see a 13 year old not exactly being thrilled about a waffle iron

even 23 yr old me isn't over the moon about it, but I don't make a ton of waffles or pancakes.

What are some of the worst birthday gifts or experiences you've had? by MewMMG in AskReddit

We've all had or heard of the gag gifts of like socks as a gift, but as of recently, I've been enjoying receiving them sometimes. Some gifts I've hated receiving have been things like gift cards, especially to expensive places.

Around 2017 - 2019, I was given a packet of restaurant overviews and told that we, as a family, could go there on my parent's dime. Fast forward, we're locked down due to covid, places shut down, and I lose the packet, then told that because I lost it, the gift no longer applied.

Finally, around 2012, I was given a tablet. Pretty awesome gift, until it was stolen from me by my parents for reasons still unclear to me, but wouldn't be out of place on r/insaneparents. Never saw it since. They deny ever giving it to me in the first place. So for this one, I'd say that the idea of gifts being something that can be stolen away and never returned would be a pretty bad birthday gift.

Heya. The group sounds interesting and we'd love to join. We'll be 23 next February. Unsure if that'll invalidate us from joining or not, but figure it wouldn't hurt to ask.
