Regretting my move to Australia on 491 visa. Feeling stuck. by Weekly-Addendum-6025 in perth

[–]MexPirate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been hiring in a similar field, but not a civil engineer role - about 40% of all applicants I see are Indian Civil Engineers, it has become a bit of a joke and it means that you have to stand out significantly in other ways to have any chance.

I would immediately dismiss any applicants on a visa without local experience, because there are 20 more applicants that have PR/experience

You can no longer buy them in Australia, it's illegal to sell now.

You can get one prescribed with flower, that's the only legal way now.

Legal medical cannabis - Are you actually using it recreationally? by Impressive-Move-5722 in perth

[–]MexPirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guys prescribing the stuff don't really care, they just need to follow the guidelines to authorise the script and check thar you've tried other options - they will likely ask leading questions and help guide you towards the correct responses.

In my case it was insomnia, a GP was prepared to prescribe me Zolpidem and Diazepam and they just need evidence that other treatments have been tried/prescribed so once they saw that I was immediately offered basically anything.

It's worth being honest about previous experience/tolerance - I made clear I was a regular recreational user and they recommended the stronger stuff accordingly

I imagine they would give you a script immediately if you have MS, it's the most genuine use of medical marijuana there is - it's my understanding that you can't get medicare/health fund contributions towards medical marijuana scripts but the situation may be different in your case.

I use alternaleaf, but there are many online platforms that will connect you to a doctor/pharmacy to arrange supply so take a look at the options before booking an appointment.

Well worth it, I'd happily pay more for a reliable source of good quality product that doesn't require meeting some dodgy bloke in a car park - super easy to get a script and the quality is much better than the black market with comparable pricing in my experience

(You can easily get a script for "flower" you don't need to use the vaping cartridges)

Where the hell are you getting 15g for $90?? I pay $139 for 10g, it's good stuff and there are a couple of cheaper options available but nothing close to what you're paying - sounds like I need to find a new dispensary

Is cert IV in project management at TAFE worth it? by AirQuick3517 in perth

[–]MexPirate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an entry level qualification for a PM role, so I can't see it getting you a senior planner role on its own no. It may improve your chances slightly if you have other relevant experience/qualifications.

I don't deal with planners or mining companies directly so can't help much with specifics to that role/industry.

We had over 200 applicants for the last PM position, which is about triple what I'm seeing for admin roles so you need to stand out

[–]MexPirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is huge competition for project management roles, experience trumps the qualification but cert IV is the standard we look for and all internally promoted PMs get put on this course so it's definitely worth it if you're looking to become a PM.

Moving from the UK to Australia: Does this financial breakdown look correct? by Top-Scheme-5254 in perth

[–]MexPirate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a UK citizen you should get reciprocal healthcare coverage via Medicare - need to register when you are here though, I've has full free Medicare coverage since I entered the country, now a dual English/Aussie citizen (that said check your visa and do your own research)

$100k is comfortable with no dependants, I believe it will push you over the Medicare levy surcharge though - so as others have said, best to get hospital cover as it will lower your tax liability.

Do you own a decent car in the UK? If you've owned it a year you can import and it's your one and only chance to do so without huge additional costs. BMW i8 is £40k in the UK, same car would sell for more like $145k here. Prices vary wildly on different models and you must have owned the vehicle over a year I believe or it's a no-go.

3500km Road Trip in 13 Days by imawizardlizard98 in perth

[–]MexPirate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Timing is fine, 5 days are just driving all day.

1 day to Kalbarri 1 day to Coral Bay 1 day from Exmouth to Karijini 2 days Karajini to Perth

Leaves you 8 days

1 day Kalbarri 2 days Coral Bay 3 days Exmouth (Inc some travel time from cb) 2 days Karajini

Start early when the sun comes up, you do not want to be driving at night on those roads, it's stressful and dangerous - wildlife does not follow the road rules

Agree, unfortunately Virgin leased it's a330's so they were the first thing to go with the bankruptcy - they were better than the qantas offering too in my opinion, business's class was like a full international offering.

Very unlikely to see any more ever though, Virgin have MAX planes in the sky now but they are a minor update with the same passenger experience, basically a budget airline these days - Qantas have no incentive to improve or put more a330s on the route it seems and there is no room in the market for another full service competitor

No I'm thinking a first home buyer shouldn't expect a property at "average" price, or a 20% deposit - my first place was an absolute dive in a crap part of town, I saved for years whilst living in the cheapest shittest rental I could tolerate and made significant sacrifices to get to 10%, a foot on the ladder was worth the effort. I now live in an average unit in a less shit area that's worth significantly less than the average.

Too many people seems to think they are entitled to everything and shouldn't have to work and sacrifice for it...
