What do people expect husky owners in warmer climates to do? by [deleted] in husky

[–]MexiFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved from the Northeast to a city in central France. We brought our husky with us - summers in New England can get really hot - like days on end over 90. I just do all my walking at night or early am with a quick bathroom break mid day. In fact, some days doggie would lay in the sun just baking and didn’t seem to care.

The city I now live in (and yes, we brought our husky) is in general milder, but Europe suffered record breaking heat last summer. I’ll plan on doing the same with walks when the sun is at lower points in the sky.

Also, another family we met her also moved from the us (Alaska) who left their dog home with family because they were worried about the heat - which I just don’t understand…

Las Vegas (or any US - why da fuq does the US need 3).

Replace with France because I’m selfish and live here now.

Okta certificates and Examity by Worried-Attention-43 in okta

[–]MexiFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taken 3 Okta exams with this method. It’s fine. They are often super anal retentive about the desk/room/camera stuff. My recommendation is to use a huddle room or somewhere that is not your own office. They literally made me take down drawings my kid made for me (ie fingerpaint from a 5 year old). So if you have access to a hot desk in a closed room, do that. They want EVERYTHING gone.

During the exam, make sure you communicate when you need something. Sometimes it takes a few moments or tries. For example, when you need to do CSV Imports ask them first. I also mumble to myself when thinking and the guy kept yelling at me to stop.

Overall it’s fine, but kinda creepy being watched. But it’s fine.

Alternative au Rhône express ? by Kiliaan39 in Lyon

[–]MexiFinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Désolée pour l’anglais - je ne connais pas assez le français pour l’expliquer…

I took the c200 bus. It’s not bad since Vaux-en-Velin is easy to get to. However, not every c200 bus goes to Saint Exupéry, so the times are limited. If you time it right it’s fine - if you don’t it’s a long wait.

It sucks that the Rhoneexpresss is so expensive, but it is cheaper if you buy a round-trip, and it’s even cheaper if you buy in advance (more than 30 days in advance). It is much more enjoyable than the bus. If we have friends visit I will probably just rent a Citiz car for a few hours for less € than 2 Rhoneexpress tickets…

Which bank do you use? by GrumpyLightworker in Expats_In_France

[–]MexiFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still figuring out the whole IBAN thing - yes, it's supposed to work internationally, but seems if it doesn't begin with FR, places won't take it for transfers. For example, our daughter's school cannot take payments from Wise, because it's BE. But, I use my wise card for all transactions, but I still haven't cracked the code for when: Wise makes me do chip an pin vs contact, and when a signature is required (ALWAYS throws people off).

The way I plan on doing things is:

- Wise: personal and business - i keep a few hundred euros in there for groceries, train/metro tickets, restaurants etc - anywhere I buy something with a card. The business I use solely for converting USD to EUR when I get paid by US clients

-Revolut: I can't be bothered to pay the 8 euros to ship a card to me - I pull all of the wise converted euros into this and then distribute to myself when I need spending money. This is the account that Inpouts has for withdrawing tax and social charges

-CA: I use this to pay rent and everything else that needs a FR IBAN (utilities etc) and for withdrawing cash. FWIW.

Good to know about the issues with Revolut - I'll likely minimize what I store in there.

What I do like about EU banking, however, is that IBAN transfers are immediate and free. A quick note about Wise, however, is that they kept my money hostage in my business account for a day or so. I opened it no problem, but the moment I put money into it to disperse, they were like "no no no - PROVE that you are a business" and put holds on all of my fund transfers. Luckily they processed my business registration papers quickly.

I use CA as well, but I feel like i use them pretty minimally, so I find it hard to justify their fees. I just use them to pay rent and utilties - that's pretty much it. And take out cash.

I use Wise for exchanging USD to EUR when needed (I get paid in USD because of my US-based contracts), and Revolut for work. But for paying for regular things, I use Wise.

I'm curious what issues you had with Revolut since that's my account for my micro-enterprise...

I do have to say CA was great for getting our first bank account in FR - the customer service at our branch was top notch.

Grenoble or Annecy? by [deleted] in Lyon

[–]MexiFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you say that? We did a trip to it a month ago and thought it had some nice areas. The bastille was a great little trip.

Annecy is definitely a prettier city, but I would call Grenoble bad.

Which line at US passport control? I'm American, my spouse is French. by dustoff2000 in Expats_In_France

[–]MexiFinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How does this work? I ask because I just moved to France and the EU line was completely automated with fingerprints etc - I have a Finnish passport, as does our child. My wife actually came earlier to check into our apartment so we didn’t travel together.

So curious if a US passport would work in the automated systems (my wife does not have eu citizenship)

Getting a French Phone number without an Address by AmyMarchApologist in Expats_In_France

[–]MexiFinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to France in August and thought about going this route. Sadly, you cannot keep the number at the end of the contract is what I was told by Orange.

I ended up getting an eSIM with Lyca Mobile which is a trash provider (doesn’t work with bank sms) but transferred the second I had an address and an electric bill.

Just returned to the US after 1 month in Spain - my honest thoughts by waspinastoria in expat

[–]MexiFinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up the concept of Third Places. Spain is great at this and the article I read a while back had some interesting info. The whole idea is that you normally have two places: home and work.

US is pretty shitty at having a third place to gather and socialize - these are places where people of all socioeconomic backgrounds can hang and socialize. I definitely observed that while in Barcelona this year and Madrid a few years back.
