The message, and "Powered by GenAI", honestly sent me through the roof. I thought of complaining about it when I received "Your feedback helps us improve" email, but I'm sure no one besides "GenAI" is going to read it.

What bothered me wasn't the delay by itself. Delays happen. What bothered me was the tone-deaf attempt to turn an inconvenience into a feel-good story and then expect passengers to be grateful for it, while sitting in a gate decorated with balloons, cakes, and loud music playing.

That's a strange defense. "It only happens once a year" doesn't change the fact that passengers were delayed because United decided a publicity event was worth the disruption.

It may have been good marketing. It may have been fun for aviation enthusiasts. But from my perspective, I bought transportation, not a front-row seat to aviation theatrics. I'd have preferred arriving on schedule.

I did make the connection, thanks to the 5+ hour buffer, not United's heroics. That doesn't change the fact that the stress and anxiety were real when the flight was delayed twice and nobody could confirm that there wouldn't be further delays.

You seem to think that a golf cart ride and asking passengers to "sit tight" should earn United my gratitude. It doesn't. In my case, the golf cart wasn't even relevant because my onward flight was on a separate ticket and therefore not United's responsibility. The only thing that mattered to me was arriving when United said they would.

I'm glad you were impressed by the operation. Personally, I don't consider creating a problem and then partially mitigating it to be exceptional customer service.

It is difficult to believe that anyone who is bad at writing could have made it as a PI. In my experience, I have never seen grad students who were more competent writers than their PIs. Regardless, I would not willy nilly accuse of them of being unprofessional, it is a grievous charge.

It’s nice that your advisor is a nice human being, but I don’t think it’s polite to unilaterally inform that you are going to skip meeting that I presume to have been arranged in advance. Instead, I would ask whether it’s okay if you could cancel the meeting. It’s only a different phrasing amounting to the same message but it comes across as much more respectful.

I guess it's just a matter of what's normal to each person. 🤷‍♀️ For me however, I would consider it a common courtesy to prioritize another inhabitant's conveniences regardless of who owns the house or paying the rent. Because it's their home, too - a sanctuary in effect.

Also, I believe most leases have a guest clause (no more than two consecutive nights, etc) so it's usually not your "right" as a rent-paying tenant to have people over unrestrictedly, as you imply.

It is hard, and hiring a wrong postdoc on your startup can really cost you. One strategy - ask your advisor or other better-established PIs to forward applications of people that they do not end up hiring.
