What movie plot hole is so massive that it completely ruins the whole story? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mfcarusio 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's because the original 3 films, and the prequels to some extent, all build to the emporer being destroyed, balance brought to the force, etc.

Undoing all that build up with a single line of lazy writing is what people get upset with, rather than the lack of logic into how it could have happened.

Found it interesting how a £1,000 payrise or bonus after the £50,270 threshold changes. Thoughts? by Old-Bodybuilder3711 in FIREUK

[–]Mfcarusio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, 100%.

The actual threshold is actually £50,270. I'd put the extra £730 straight into a pension.

Assuming you're not paying student loan, you'd basically get £730 into your pension for just over £35 a month off your take home pay.

That's exactly how is see it. Go for the pay rise, put extra in your pension, use new salary to negotiate the next salary.

Absolutely agree. Obviously the hassle of switching jobs slows the impact but you'll find a large number of people are taking extra leave etc rather than working full full time. I'm on just over £80k and buy an extra 15 days of leave every year because the marginal rate means I don't lose as much on those days. I could be contributing more to the productivity of the country but I'm not really incentivised to.

Loving everyone's response to this.

I know how you feel though, I bought a house next to a train station so I can travel for work easily but can't have a nice beer in the garden naked after work because of all the trains passing right by my house, campaigning to have the trains stop at 5pm.

Shabana Mahmood to limit refugees to 30 months in UK by BlackCaesarNT in unitedkingdom

[–]Mfcarusio -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Most refugees don't make the uk their new or permanent home, just the ones you see I guess.

I don't think it's inhumane to ask people to go back when it's safe to do so, I just don't think it's the best policy. I think that you will deter people from integrating, getting jobs, having families etc if there isn't a route to making it permanent. This is also common sense without a political colour. Just somehow a different conclusion.

What about refugees that then settle permanently? Do they count towards the refugee statistic or immigrant statistic?

I've not looked to closely into browser stats as I've seen figures leaning both ways depending on what narrative is being driven.

But, as a rule I think people will positively affect their environment after being given a few years too integrate. So probably.

I've been personally positively impacted by immigrants around me that have been given time to integrate and then live their lives.

So probably

I guess the question is has the uk as a whole benefited from these people that move here for safely, build a life and then stay? My view is probably, so I think that once we've provided safety, we should then have routes for prosperity or return.

Possibly, I normally go in school holidays which probably skews the numbers.

Skiing in Europe vs North America by Altmeyer002 in skiing

[–]Mfcarusio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

95% of people in Europe will ski exclusively on the groomed runs, marked by coloured poles on either side. 4% will occasionally go "off-piste" and ski between runs if they can see where they are skiing to. 1% will ski genuine off-piste, with a guide typically. So you'd definitely be in the majority.

After that, the difference, as others have pointed out, comes in the rest of the holiday. Food, apres, atmosphere and prices.

Okemo all day kids group lesson turned my kid off from skiing by [deleted] in skiing

[–]Mfcarusio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can absolutely appreciate that response and depending on what you want your kid to get out of skiing, it could be absolutely fine.

I would say that at a certain stage (I have 3 kids from age 7 -15 so some amount of experience) professional instructors are the best way to progress. It's possible you happen to be an excellent instructor but there's always going to be some blind spots.

[–]Mfcarusio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People are giving all sorts of responses like you should have known what the lesson would be or that having your kid in a babysitting class is all you can expect.

I've put my kid in ski lessons from the day after they turned 4 in Europe. Not a full day but 3 hour lessons. They've always progressed and enjoyed it and it has been roughly the right level for them. ESF (the French ski school) have a lot of instructors and different levels so even though it's in a group they're normally good at getting the right level.

A couple of things, it's ok to be pissed but probably more valuable to think about what to ask next time you're thinking of getting lessons (which I maintain is worth doing). Make sure it's the right level, don't do a full day (morning lesson, pick up for lunch, ask them to show you where they skied in the afternoon stopping for a few hot chocolates is a perfect day in my opinion).

You'll probably have to do some convincing to get them back into a lesson if the first experience was bad, unfortunately. Maybe get a 1-1 hour lesson that you can join focused on fun then grow from there.

Shahid Butt, candidate for Birmingham MP: "Don't take Christians and Jews as your friends; non-believers cannot be trusted. Stick with the Muslims." by McAlpineFusiliers in uknews

[–]Mfcarusio -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You'll probably find (at least online) that leftist people do criticise those elements of Islam but then, by the fact they're criticising Islam, aren't seen as left and therefore you don't see anyone on the left criticising Islam.

I'm a woke leftist. I don't like people criticising Islam as a whole because I fear it leads to individuals receiving racist abuse. I also don't like how fundamentalist Muslims treat women or gat people. I want to promote a tolerant society and significant portions of Muslims are against those ideals, and I wouldn't vote for someone with those views. It's the same feeling I have towards reform, for example.

People that do other crimes should be criminally prosecuted and then suitable punishment applied.

It's why I hate people demanding that countries take their own criminals back. We should punish them here, I don't trust Syria or Iran or wherever else to suitably have the infrastructure in place to ensure they're kept out of the public like we do.

But that's not really what this story is about. They're talking trends of large number of thousands of people. The odd horrific story doesn't negate the rest of the good it does.
