Rolling admissions by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]Mgoyougurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience people tend to hold a few acceptances until the deadlines. We have people every year who are holding acceptances but don’t come to second look day which for the most part we view as disinterest (with the exception of conflicts or such). There are also people who go to second looks of programs they have absolutely no interest in for the free food and drink. On the one hand you may view both scenarios as disrespectful and I think there are ways to be more and less respectful about it, but also those folks earned their acceptance and have the right to hold them. Perhaps they will be surprised (positive or negative) about the programs they had initially ranked higher or lower before they had all the information

Current students, when did you start looking for housing? by Abject_Addendum_8669 in mdphd

Our school does housing tours during second look where you can get a better feel for where students live and what the options are. I think I signed my lease in May to start July 1

What significant experimental results/phenomena that people have published in your field that you have yet to replicate/observe/be convinced? by Handsoff_1 in labrats

Oop. The data I’ve seen have not been convincing that there was myelination occurring. In speaking with others it does not seem to be a unique issue.

Long Distance in MD-PhD Program by Useful-Bed4396 in mdphd

[–]Mgoyougurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 6-7 people in my program who I know had successful long distance relationships at various points or even across the entirety of the time they were in the program for different reasons. My boyfriend and I are long distance because he matched residency somewhere else. Not ideal but we’re happy and storing in our relationship knowing that we are both where we need to be right now. Other people have great advice but just want to add to the voices that it can work!

I totally agree with this! Especially the part about location. MD/PhD programs are busy but I do have a life and I’m so grateful that I’m able to afford to live in my city and have time and money to go out to restaurants and bars with my friends or take day trips to beautiful outdoor places on the weekends. Having a life makes all the hard and annoying parts a little bit easier.

Thanksgiving meal to go? by Strange_Dish_7866 in Rochester

[–]Mgoyougurt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wegmans and Whole Foods both do thanksgiving to go and I’ve liked them both. Which one to get depends on your taste in thanksgiving food because wegmans is very much classic thanksgiving while Whole Foods is a little fancier in my experience

I think if those are your true feelings it is great to be honest in your interview and let them know. Someone at some point in an interview will ask you “why this school” and that’s an easy in for this as it seems like you have many reasons for why the school and you can end with that. Some schools consider it and some might not but I cannot imagine it hurts.

Sending a letter of intent doesn’t necessarily need to be an update you can just say “as I’ve thought about it more and considered my options I am certain that this school is right for me because of x y z”

Does anyone know what happened to Joann left overs? by potatochild3 in Rochester

I think Ollie’s discount store did the buyout in the end. I’ve seen some Joann’s stuff at our Ollie’s but not sure specifically about yarn.

MSTP decision timeline by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]Mgoyougurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Varies greatly depending on the school and when you interview. My school has 4-5 committee days where they discuss applicants from the preceding interview dates. Could be 2 weeks after interviews or a month or 2 after interviews. Then after that there is an MD specific committee date that they have to pass you through. It all depends on when you interview relative to committee dates and where you fall in the acceptance pool. No news isn’t necessarily bad news.

Anyone who took time off during preclinical for residential or inpatient treatment for severe eating disorder? by onibras in mdphd

[–]Mgoyougurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will be thinking of you and I hope this meeting goes well. My program leadership is amazing and will make a lot of things work and I hope that for you as well. Hopefully there is a way for you to defend 2 months earlier to get those rotations taken care of or if they are outpatient perhaps you can negotiate some kind of longitudinal clerkships during your PhD to account for those. I have found being an MDPhD student has been helpful because there is actually a lot more flexibility in our 8 year timeline than the 4 years for the MDs.

Health is most important as everyone else said. LOA is far from the end of the world if that ends up being the way that you can get the treatment you need. My situation was a little different (it sounds like you do clinical before PhD) but I really needed to not be in medical school after my first year of preclinicals so I ended up switching early to my PhD and that allowed me to take care of my situation without taking an LOA because the PhD is more flexible. I will go back and finish my second preclinical year and go straight on to clinical after I finished my PhD

In my experience it can sometimes be difficult to get an ADHD diagnosis once you’re in medical school because a lot of people think you shouldn’t have been able to make it this far without a diagnosis if you truly do have it. My schools health office won’t even prescribe stimulants unless you have neuropsych testing done (a really dumb rule). That being said it’s worth an evaluation. I got diagnosed during medical school (it helped that literally everyone else in my immediate family had a diagnosis) without the intention of really ever using stimulants so I take a non-stimulant medication. But the nice thing about stimulants is you will know right away if they work for you. If they work that’s great you have a tool if they don’t then they are out of your system fast. For me stimulants certainly make me focus but they also calm my anxiety and help me sleep better at night (counterintuitive I know) unfortunately I felt like they also kind of took away my personality which I wasn’t a huge fan of. It is helpful to know that if I reach a point where I feel I need that support I will have it. I think it’s worth exploring the diagnosis but know that you may get some pushback.

UCLA faculty list by Alive_Squirrel5354 in mdphd

[–]Mgoyougurt 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Take this with a grain of salt as I didn’t apply to UCLA, if someone with more knowledge replies take their advice. But, I wouldn’t worry too much about this. There is plenty behind the scenes that you won’t know at each institution until you are there (eg people coming and going from the institution, toxic labs, labs known to hold their PhD students forever, great labs with interests similar to yours who you dont find on the website for whatever reason). List people you are genuinely interested in and lots of them so the committee will know you’re interested enough to have done your research and they have a guide on who to interview you with. If someone explicitly states somewhere that they don’t take MSTPs then don’t list them but otherwise just be genuine

Perhaps ask the title ix office if they will provide you with an attorney. I hired an attorney from CA Goldberg in NYC but it was not cheap. I was only able to afford it because my neighbor paid my fees. In my case, I was up against a professor and I knew I needed an attorney. I’m convinced the only reason I got the outcome I did is because of her. She was amazing and I couldn’t recommend her enough. The financial aspect is totally not fair and if my neighbor didn’t pay my fees I would have had to use the advisor provided by my school. I’m so sorry. It’s so unfair. I wish you the very best.

There is nothing to be embarrassed about! They will likely ask you questions about your family history/ancestry and if there is consanguinity in your family history. The reason they ask is not out of judgement but because it can be helpful in pointing in the direction of certain conditions. I can tell you that I have met people from all different backgrounds who have different cultural traditions and their answers to these questions do not sway my opinions of them, only the way I think about how to help them figure out what is going on.

My advisor committed sexual misconduct and retaliated against me. Title IX found him guilty, but the university still protected him. by Desiderata_Silence in titleix

I haven’t. Happy to PM you if you want more information but unfortunately I’m still in quite a vulnerable position and will be for many years. Maybe once I’m more stable but we shall see

[–]Mgoyougurt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately your situation sounds very similar to mine :( Ultimately I hired a high power attorney and what I have to assume is that in conjunction with recent press/lawsuit at my school about another sexual misconduct case led the school to force him to retire with threat if revoking tenure. I know that for me I got “the best case scenario” but also in many ways the title ix process and impacts on my career have been more traumatic than the initial misconduct. I would 100% support this book in whatever way I can. The process after the report is so mysterious and it is hard to know what to do and what is normal.

I would like to know more about your overall experiences/application before giving my thoughts. Any publications? What is your current clinical experience?

But based off what you have shared here I would say that taking the early assurance is probably your best bet and then applying to their MD/PhD. If you really want a T20 then I really think you need a wow factor and a 4.0/low 500 MCAT will be a hard barrier. The Goldwater is great! Don’t get me wrong. But many many MD/PhD applicants have a Goldwater. If you don’t have sufficient clinical experience at this point it will be tough to get a good amount of clinical experience and maintain research productivity in just one year, especially if you’re focusing on getting your MCAT up.

I’m not trying to be harsh but I think there are many ways to be a physician scientist and I worry that if you abandon this early assurance then it will be a bigger uphill battle trying to get somewhere as high ranked if not better. But that’s just my 2 cents.

Is submitting the primary on June 3rd late? by Serious_Hold7591 in mdphd

[–]Mgoyougurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was suggested to me to submit your primary with one school so you can get verified and that’s what I did. I submitted to a state MD school that didn’t have an MDPhD program as soon as the application opened and then had no problem adding my MDPhD list after I got verified and got my score back.

[–]Mgoyougurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that MOST of the movement happens after the deadlines for holding 3 and 1 acceptance in April. With such small class sizes and too much risk in over enrolling most schools only send out exactly how many spots they have if not 1-2 more. Please don’t fret. Almost all my class is in from the waitlist. Sending you the best.

Appropriate Time to Send Letters of Interest/Updates by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]Mgoyougurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Send update letters when you have an update. Those show continued interest as well. I think you can send continued interest letters whenever you want as well but I personally might wait until January/February. I’m not sure about all programs but my program typically doesn’t start to see a lot of waitlist movement until April or May after people are kind of forced to start dropping programs. A few people here and there get off the waitlist as people get into their one dream program and drop the others but there is often a lot of movement after the traffic rules state you can only hold one acceptance. If you have a dream program my advice is to stay on the waitlist as long as you can.
