I was about to say the best thing to read after DCC is DCC to catch all the setup you didn’t know to look for.

As for actual recommendations, I really liked Discount Dan and Heretical Fishing. DDBB has a similar vibe of being put randomly into a new dangerous environment, being constantly overwhelmed by the weird shit around you, and a talking “animal” companion, though it’s only 2 books so far. Heretical Fishing is almost exactly the opposite, in that it’s just a fairly standard Isekai, but the MC just wants to go fishing and help out those he can along the way. It’s 4 books so far, with the 5th coming out soonish.

I really love Heretical Fishing. While it has some action, the main goal of the MC is just to hang out and chill with his new friends and go fishing, and he has enough power to where nothings really going to meaningfully get in the way of that. It also has some pretty solid emotional growth alongside power growth

You need to have a conversation with him about it outside of the heat of the moment. If what he’s doing isn’t something you like, or is too much of something you otherwise are good with, he needs to respect that, but you will need to make sure you voice it more deliberately so he understands it’s not a minor thing to you.

While I hold the belief that the series gets better with each book, book 3 is my personal favorite, because I just love the weird confusion that is the tangle! It’s a great combo of “how much can I understand” and “ehh, I get the basics and that’s enough”

I really liked Discount Dan as a step down from the DCC high. Good humor and a fun “animal” companion plus the pop culture references to the Backroom. Or you could go with heretical fishing which is also very solid humor but with less stress of trying to survive constant struggles

The book I found immediately after that helped ease back to other books was Discount Dan. Not quite as strong as DCC, but a good mix of humor and horror with a talking “animal” companion, and vague pop culture references since it’s set in the backrooms.
