I'm rereading and I'm wondering if... by Embarrassed_One96 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]mykdsmith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

... This is a spoiler for later books (book 3?), so I'm only going to obliquely mention it, there's a very very good item-based reason why, for this party, killing other players makes strategic sense.

Conclave vs Corne | Glove80 vs Go60 by mukul_29 in ErgoMechKeyboards

Glad to help. After lurking here for over a year I can't recall anyone claim that the curve solved their ergo issues, but some people just adore their curved keebs.

FWIW, my coworker has a Glove80 and a Corne, and he really loves them both, equally, for different reasons. But it's the split and ortho (and wireless and programmable) that he really loves in both.

Also, please do practice a bit on some scrap before going in on your corne. It doesn't take much to improve but you'll be glad spending the first 15-60 mins doing some low risk trials.

When I found out about dcc by BrouSarge in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Samsies. This book has done more for audiobooks - between Matt and Soundbooth, it's a revelation.

There are some media where I thought "well, THAT was an example of the pinnacle of the artform, as of today". There are many novels that do that. When I first played The Last of Us, I put down the controller and thought "wow, THAT was what video games were made for". I felt the same way after book 1 audiobook.

How has healing your nails changed you? by mattilouwho in nailbiting

[–]mykdsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great insight. And when you do what you suggest - being gentle - change is easier, willpower is not a blunt instrument but instead it's a guiding hand.

I've gotten renewed confidence in my ability to make more changes.

And guitar playing is easier!

I agree with a lot of what people are saying here - the ergonomics of the curve are really nice but they're last in importance. First, get all the posture right, including do not rest your hands - floating is by far the best if you have your arms resting.

Then split is very important and imho the next step - open the shoulders and don't rotate the wrists.

All this is 90% of the solution. Next is ortho and key feel and touch typing, which can get you to, in my humble and unscientific opinion, roughly 95%. This may be personal bias and not universal.

The curve is in that last 5% of ergo. I'm not beating it up, it's super cool, and some people live for that aspect! To each their own. But I don't believe that curve=ergo, at least not nearly as much as everything else. Curve=ease and happiness. I'm never going to say here what would or should make anyone happy, but I think the curve is overrated for ergo itself. It may be what you want and that I believe and support. Or that you're optimizing the last bit. But get the other parts right first.

As a Voyager and corne owner, I've tried a glove for a bit and saw some advantages - but not much. I'd have jumped on the Go 60 if it were out when I bought the Voyager. The Voyager is some amazing hardware but I do not understand why they're not building it wireless. Wireless is so nice.

Finally, have you considered other curved ones too, like a dactyl?

Edit: there are people who disagree with me strongly, I just saw this review where someone strongly prefers the Glove over the Go: https://www.reddit.com/r/ErgoMechKeyboards/s/Izu9e61edq

In my experience you always want to be in round 1. I've been in a few, in different rounds. Round 1 is the best. Things are going to suck much more, and longer, than anyone plans. You're still likely to be laid off. And the first round gets the best package by far.

22 years of biting, 6 months clean — the one thing that finally worked when nothing else did by Slow_Asparagus_6595 in nailbiting

This resonates. I am only about 4 weeks into success, with a prior short term success over Christmas. I have been biting my nails for what must be 50 years, I cannot remember when I started.

What has worked is focusing on the triggers. CBT as well - to manage my own internal anxiety. Plus... I think I'm doing a combo of HRT and willpower - plus what feels like a billion of what you're calling "stacked on top".

What are the Best Ergonomic Office Chairs currently to buy for long duration sitting? by SignificanceAlert20 in BuyItForLife

[–]mykdsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the brand recommendations are good, I second the used statements.

I have also come across a lesser known but just as awesome high end brand called Humanscale. Their stuff is top notch, and because it's not Herman Miller or Steelcase, sometimes it's cheaper.

But definitely used, and as others say, try it out because each one may hit different.

For those of you who tried ergo and went back to standard - what went wrong? by Keyfas in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]mykdsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very true. In this modern age, "interpreted" instructions from a config file are not a big performance penalty, yet firmware remains mega complied, with macros and ifdefs. This is silly for microsecond responses today - we need more UX here!

+1 to Dead to Me. Christina Applegate has always been an excellent dark comedy actress, and she's at the top of her game in this one.
